It is hard to believe that another year has passed us by. We had a very good turn-out for our District Annual Meeting and I would like to thank Tonda Davis, President, Silver Hill Memorial UMW and all of her ladies for hosting this event. I pray that each of you had a blessed Thanksgiving and remembered to give thanks to our Lord and Saviour for all of your many, many blessings. I would like to thank each of you who provided an auction item for the Auction for a Cause to benefit the Bethlehem Center. We do not have a final figure, but, according to Patrena, we had a lot of nice items in the Auction and this year could be a banner year for our fund-raising efforts. I am also glad to report that we “finally” have a communications coordinator. Deb Jolly has agreed to fill this position, so, hopefully, we can get back on track with the “Spark.” I would like to personally thank Carmen Wannamaker and Tonda Davis for taking on this task. Thank you so much ladies for seeing a need and taking action. Although the holiday season is over, let us not forget those around us who are not as fortunate as we are. Thanks to you who helped Bethlehem Center at Christmas. They always need our help and the number children and Seniors they serve have almost doubled. Please give them a call. I am sure that Patrena would welcome your gift or gifts. If your unit has extra funds, all of our South Carolina mission projects can use a “little something extra” this time of year. When we give sacrificially, God blesses us beyond measure. I was pleased to see all who turned out at our District Officer Training. Attending our UMW events is an excellent way to find out what is going on with United Methodist Women around the state, nation and world. If no one from you unit attended please make sure you all the forms that we handed out for the coming year. I will be giving each President a President’s Report that needs to be filled out throughout the year and turned in to me in September of 2015. This report is very important as I have to make a District report to the Conference and would love for it to be accurate. If your Unit has not been a 5 Star Unit, Mission Today Unit or a Diamond Unit, Officer training is where you can learn about the requirements of becoming one and get wonderful ideas from others in your group. I pray each of you had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Blessed New Year. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ in this broken world in which we live. As per Spartanburg District UMW STANDING RULES and POLICIES, Section V – D., we have sent half ($675) to Bethlehem Center – Spartanburg and divided remaining half ($169 each) to Wallace Life, Killingswoth, St. John Rural Mission, and Bethlehem Center – Columbia, SC. Ladies, As we fast approach the end of another wonderful year, I wish to thank everyone who has been instrumental in making it one of the best yet. We had a lot of success in everything we came together to do. I especially want to thank those persons who participated in the Fall Spiritual Life Retreat. Our theme was "A Woman's Place With God" and we had women who knew they had a place and loved being in the presence of God. We had a total attendance of 72 ladies which included 6 first timers and 2 under 40. Everything was magnificent!! Rev. Kempi Shepard, our Keynote Speaker, brought an awesome massage and our Session Leaders were dynamic! We thank Sue Owens and Eugenia Young for the wonderful presentations. They made so many hearts burn, yearning for more, that by your evaluations, you have asked for a part two of the sessions for next year, We will see what direction the Lord leads us in, with your thoughts in high consideration. We also thank our Vesper Leader, Devotion Leader and musicians. Everyone, you made it a success! Saturday Night entertainment was out of this world!!! So much fun, so much laughter, so much sharing! I know we blessed God's heart with all that was done and we look forward to a even better experience next year. Please note The South Carolina Retreat Committee is making preparations for the 2015 SCCUMW Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Retreat II will be a repeat of Retreat I. Our UMW National President Mrs. Yvette Rich-ards, from Kansas City, Missouri, will be the keynote speaker. The theme for 2015 retreat is; “ Fill My Cup Lord; with Faith, Hope and Love!” Please come and partake in this spirit filled event in which your cup will overflow from Godly teaching on faith, hope and love. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of soup which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of soup and take a spoonful but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at their misery and suffering. The Lord said. “You have seen Hell.” They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of soup which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, “ I don’t understand.” “It is simple,” said the Lord, “it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.” We Need You! Ladies. Young in age and Young in heart. Mark Your Calendars On January 10th the Spartanburg District Officers Training will be held at United Methodist Church of the Covenant located at 9020 Asheville Hwy toward Inman SC. We will begin at 9:00 AM with registration and refreshments. There will be groups divided and meetings with your district counterpart. We encourage all our local officers to attend even if you have held your office for many, many years. Things do change. Please keep our UMW in your prayers as we prepare for our upcoming year. Any questions?? Please call Vickie Harvey @ 864-266-1870. Killingsworth Circle of Care On January 24th, Trinity UMC in Spartanburg will be hosting the first Killingsworth Circle of Care. Some of you heard about this from Jan Harmon at the Annual Meeting as well as the retreat. If you are interested in what this group is doing and the support that the UMW gives them as one of our missions please come. Dianne Mosley and several of the ladies from Killingsworth will be there to talk with. This is the first meeting of its kind and Spartanburg District would love to “set the bar” for the other districts to follow. Trinity will provide a lunch but we need to know if you are coming. There were 201 people registered and we were very happy to have so many clergy attending. Also, we would like to thank Silver Hill Memorial UMC for hosting our event. Tonda Davis and the UMW there made us all feel very welcome. We really enjoyed our evening. I am very blessed to have such wonderful people to work with on our District Team as well as our local UMWs. Together, we can do all things through him. Vickie Harvey, 8 An Invitation to join a special designated circle The Circle of Care! The Killingsworth Auxiliary is coming to a district near you! Because Killingsworth is a South Carolina Conference Advanced Special Ministry, and also one of five designated missions for South Carolina Conference United Methodist Women, we are often given opportunities to present our ministry to congregations, and also to groups within local churches (UMW circles, Sunday School classes, etc.). In most cases individuals introduced to our program in these settings hear our story that one time, may give a financial or in-kind gift that one time, but do not have an accessible opportunity to continue their connection with our mission beyond that. However, the stories of the women of Killingsworth resonate with many who would welcome an opportunity to have an ongoing relationship with our ministry. National statistics indicate that one in four women are victims of sexual assault and every 3 minutes a woman is a victim of domestic violence. The number of women in prison is higher than it ever has been, and most groups of family and friends include someone who has struggled with mental illness or the illness of addiction. Everybody knows somebody -- in their families, in their circle of friends, or even themselves -who are or were potential residents of Killingsworth. For whatever reason - even if they do not know someone personally -- many have “a heart” for our mission, and feel called to continue a relationship with us. However, currently there is not a vehicle for easily doing that. To meet that need we are revisiting an idea that had a fledgling welcome fifteen years ago, but fizzled for lack of organization. Today we are getting organized! The women of Killingsworth are often told -- because it is true -- that they are surrounded “by so great a cloud of witnesses” who are supporting and praying for them. We would like to make that “cloud” a more tangible witness of support by organizing those who feel called to connect with our mission in meaningful ways. We are calling a Circle of Care into a new reality to offer in ways large and small opportunities for those whose hearts are with us to find avenues to serve with us. The Circle of Care around Killingsworth will be attractive to those who do not like to go to meetings, but who do like to make a difference in the lives of those who long “to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.” Circle members will be given more information about our program, and more insight into why women come to Killingsworth in the first place. We will provide forums for members to meet and hear from residents and learn how the ministry of Killingsworth affects their lives. In most cases, we will communicate over the Internet to save postage and trees and allow members to share information with others easily. The only expectation of membership is your active heartfelt support and your prayers........ oh, and that you “like us” on Facebook. 9 Organization: Members of The Circle of Care would * Receive monthly updates and pictures of activities at Killingsworth * Meet once a year in each district. Staff and residents travel to the district - gather in a local church for a meal -- probably lunch on a Saturday, but that is flexible. - hear updates on Killingsworth: program, property, and plans. - be among the first to learn of any big changes - sit with residents and staff at a meal and visit. - hear a presentation from a resident about her journey - have the opportunity to ask questions of residents and staff. No stressful expectations: no dues; no committee meetings; no reports to file; no budgets to meet. Only voluntary gifts as each individual is led. Opportunities: ** Share our story: keep your congr egation infor med about the ministr y of Killingswor th -the program, the stories, events, and fundraisers ** Tell others what we need: or ganize in-kind donations in your local church to help meet particular needs (we will get it picked up, if you can’t get to Columbia) ** Share information about fundraisers: find and encour age sponsor s and four somes for the golf tournament, paddlers for the Boatload of Fun, and guests for the annual holiday Gala ** Participate yourself: play golf; paddle down the Saluda River ; attend the Gala; donate to the silent auction (make a wreath, find sponsors, gather gift certificates); organize local fundraisers to benefit Killingsworth in general or for a specific project (like -- new twin mattresses or new pots and pans, or paint for bedrooms); include the ministry of Killingsworth in your estate planning; help your local church plan for Advanced Special Ministries Sunday every November; pray for the women of Killingsworth. ** Recruit new members for the Cir cle of Car e NEXT MEETING: SPARTANBURG DISTRICT January 24, 2015 at Trinity UMC, Spartanburg FLORENCE DISTRICT March – details to follow 10 T HE SPAR K Education and Interpretation A special thank you to all the UMW units that participated in the Mission Today program and received certificates at the Annual Meeting. We encourage even more participation in 2015. So, let's get busy, begin making your plans and get those forms filled out. Please find form enclosed for your convenience. All about Missions! Please encourage all your Church and friends to save their used postage stamps. These used stamps are forwarded to Sue Owens. And she requests that we not attempt to peel the stamp from the mail. Instead tear the corner of the letter leaving some margin around the stamp. Proceeds from the sale of the stamps are being used to send items of clothing, shoes, and other supplies to a Mission in Africa. You may send these stamps directly to me or Sue Owens. Any doubt to the contrary would have been erased with the recent gathering of cancelled stamps that were bestowed upon me at the Annual Meeting! Bags and envelopes filled with trimmed and untrimmed stamps appeared from many car trunks and suitcases. Ladies were seen sitting under the tent next to the registration area contentedly trimming stamps and talking to their friends. They were even smiling as they performed their task. One lady was even heard to say that she really enjoyed trimming stamps. This is an easy way for us to be involved in mission. Those who benefit from the sale of these stamps don’t have a clue that this project has involved so many people in lands so far away. All they know is that they have shoes for their feet, protecting them from boring parasites, clothes on their backs, and medical supplies to treat their ills. The last shipment that went out contained well-drilling equipment, providing fresh water to a land thirsting for a better way of life. The little part that we play in collecting these stamps does make a big difference in many lives. Keep those scissors snipping, Ladies! Maybe you could even schedule a stamptrimming party with your local unit. It is getting close to the end of the year. Each unit is encouraged to empty their treasury, leaving only enough for start-up money for the next year. Please remember our mission projects with cash donations, gift cards, and new stamps for their mailing purposes. Please send your gifts through the proper channels—to your District treasurer and on to Maureen Thomas. With Christmas around the corner, think about “adopting” a client from one of our Mission Projects and providing Christmas for that person, sponsoring a Christmas party for the children or adults who participate at these places, decorating (and un-decorating) the facilities for Christmas, doing whatever you can to make the lives of the people affected by these facilities a little happier during the upcoming holiday season. It was great to see all who were in attendance at our SCCUMW 42nd Annual Meeting. For those of you that could not make it, guess what?…….WE MISSED YOU! As always, we had an awesome time together. This year our theme was, “And What Does the Lord Require of You?” with the scriptural reference coming from Micah 6:8. In response to this theme we, the Limitless Team chose to host a cereal drive. As we extended the invitation for you to assist us with this project, your response was ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMING!!! We would like to say THANK YOU to ALL who donated cereal, made a monetary contribution, said a prayer, or simply passed the word. At the Annual Meeting, with YOUR assistance and donations, we collected 927 boxes of cereal and $47.85 in cash. Your continued kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you for helping us to do that which the Lord requires of US! WE APPLAUD YOU!!! UPDATE: Please note that we have revised our previous SC Limitless tri-fold brochure. The new brochure remains uniform in color, but now represents the national age range for Limitless UMW, which is 14 to 30 years. These brochures are available and ready for distribution. Please help us share the information around the SCCUMW. Lastly, on a personal note, I would like to thank YOU, my fellow sisters of the SCCUMW, for the Special Mission Recognition Pin (SMRP) that I was presented with at our Annual Meeting. Thank you for the kind gesture of love, which simply expressed to me, that I make you proud! It was a great surprise, but with an even greater honor, and with esteemed respect for our purpose as UMW, I will wear my SMRP. Together, WE are doing that which the Lord requires of us. To God be the glory! Please know that I enjoy working with and learning from you great women.
