Video shows Arizona ocer ramming into robbery suspect
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Dramatic dash-
cam video showing a police ofcer using
his cruiser to ram into a rie-toting rob-
bery suspect who had been walking down a
street was getting attention across the U.S.
on Wednesday.
Adding to a growing stream of images
that is raising hard questions about police
use of force, the video released Tuesday
shows the suspect being hit from behind
and cart-wheeling through the air as the
cruiser slams into a wall.
The intentional, high-speed crash clearly
shocked a fellow ofcer, who had just
warned other police to stay back because
the rie was “denitely loaded.”
Prosecutors cleared Ofcer Michael Ra-
piejko of any wrongdoing in the ramming of
the suspect, who survived the Feb. 19 crash.
Mario Valencia, 36, apparently escaped
major injuries and now faces several felony
charges, including assault on an ofcer.
His attorney, Michelle Cohen-Metzger,
has not responded to a request for comment
from The Associated Press.
Marana police Sgt. Chris Warren said
Valencia robbed a convenience store in Tuc-
son, broke into a church, invaded a home,
stole a car and then drove to the northern
suburb of Marana, where he stole a rie
from a Wal-Mart.
Video from two police cruisers shows
Valencia walking with a rie down a busy
business corridor. At one point, Valencia
points the rie at himself and threatens to
kill himself. At another, Valencia shoots the
rie into the air.
One of the dash cam videos was from a
cruiser driving slowly behind Valencia from
about a half-block away. That ofcer can be
heard telling others to “stand off” because
the suspect is armed.
Moments later, another patrol car sud-
denly comes into view, driving at high
speed into Valencia, sending him ying
before smashing into a retaining wall.
The camera in Rapiejko’s cruiser pro-
vides a more rst-person view, which ends
with a shattered windshield.
“Oh, Jesus Christ, man down!” the rst
ofcer shouts as police swarm the scene,
guns drawn.
Warren said Rapiejko was put on a stan-
dard administrative leave, but is back on
regular duty after the Pima County Attor-
ney’s Ofce cleared him of any wrongdoing.

LEGALS
BOSTON (AP) The second anniversary of the Boston
Marathon bombings brought together survivors and rescu-
ers Wednesday as the city prepared to mark the day with a
moment of silence, the tolling of church bells and a call for
kindness.
With the plaintive wail of bagpipes in the background,
Mayor Marty Walsh, Gov. Charlie Baker and other ofcials
unveiled commemorative banners Wednesday morning
at the site of the blasts on Boylston Street. The orange
banners bear a white heart with a road receding into the
distance and the word “Boston.”
“In many respects, those most affected by the events of
two years ago have shown us all the way back — with their
courage, grace and determination,” Baker said in a state-
ment released after the ceremony. “They honor the past,
remember and treasure loved ones lost and injured, and
look forward to a better future. We should strive to do the
same.”
The four banners were mounted on light poles wrapped
in blue and yellow owers, the marathon’s colors.
Jane Richard, who lost her 8-year-old brother, Martin,
in the blasts, which also took her leg, helped unveil one
set of banners. The Richard family walked down Boylston
Street with Walsh at the ceremony honoring victims and
survivors.
Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs above the knee in the
blasts, exchanged a big hug with Carlos Arredondo, who
helped save his life two years ago. Bauman was able to de-
scribe to describe to police one of the two brothers accused
of carrying out the attack.
“We’re here to pay tribute to the people who lost their
lives,” Bauman told WFXT-TV.
A moment of silence will follow at 2:49 p.m., when the
rst of two bombs exploded near the nish line on April 15,
2013. Church bells will then ring throughout the city.
Walsh has declared April 15 “One Boston Day,” a new
tradition in which Bostonians are encouraged to show
kindness and generosity.
Three people were killed and more than 260 others were
wounded in the attacks. Surviving bomber Dzhokhar Tsar-
naev was convicted of 30 counts at his federal trial and
could face the death penalty. His older brother, Tamerlan,
died following a shootout with police days after the at-
tacks.
Prosecutor: Boy left
home with baby on day
he disappeared
PULASKI, Va. (AP) — A prosecutor says the parents of
a Virginia boy found dead in a septic tank left him at home
with his infant sister on the morning he disappeared.
Pulaski County Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Flee-
nor says Ashley White and Paul Thomas told investigators
they left 5-year-old Noah Thomas and his 6-month-old sis-
ter at home while White drove Thomas to work March 22.
The Roanoke Times reports that Fleenor made the com-
ments Wednesday during a bond hearing for Paul Thomas.
Thomas and White both face child abuse and neglect
charges.
White previously told investigators the children made
the trip, and that the boy disappeared after they came
home.
Searchers found Noah Thomas’ body on March 26 in a
septic tank on the family’s property.
The father was denied bond.
