The Jesse H. Jones School of Business undergraduate scholarship program is designed to financially assist qualified applicants in pursuing
degrees in business disciplinesaccounting, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing. The program is open to full-
time first-time freshmen, incoming transfer, and continuing students who show exceptional academic ability and exemplify good citizenship as en-
gaged members of the community, with a demonstrated financial need. Annual scholarship awards are renewable if all requirements are met
each semester.

Who is considered a first-time freshman?
A first-time freshman is a high school graduate who has not earned any college credits since high school (this does not
include current high school students who are taking college courses) and is entering college for the first time.
Who is considered an incoming transfer student?
An incoming transfer student is a high school graduate who has completed at least 12 college credits since graduating
from high school before the expected date of entry into Texas Southern University.
UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1) All applicants must meet all requirements for regular admission to Texas Southern University.
2) All applicants must be in good standing,
3) Transfer applicants must have completed 15 or more semester hours of college credit, must have a minimum 2.0 overall GPA for
hours completed at all other colleges attended, and must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 semester credit hours).
3) All applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent residency.
4) All applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form or Texas Application for State Financial
Aid (TASFA) form (international students).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is considered a continuing student?
A continuing student is student who has maintained continuous enrollment in Texas Southern University.
What is the completion rate?
Completion rate = Overall number of credit hours attempted at all universities attended / overall number of credit hours
completed or earned at all universities attended. The minimum completion rate required is 70%.
Can business students apply for the General University Scholarship?
No; business students may not apply for the General University Scholarship (GUS), but will be considered for GUS award at
the time of their JHJ School of Business Scholarship application. So, it is possible for a business student to receive GUS funds,
but business students should not apply for them.
Are JHJ scholarships performance-based or need-based?
Both, JHJ scholarship awards are based on academic performance and financial need; therefore, both components of the
scholarship must be met to qualify for an award.
How is financial need determined?
Financial Need = Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution. Financial need is determined with the completion of
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) (international
students). All scholarship applicants must complete the FAFSA or TASFA application. Texas Southern University’s institutional
code is 003642.
How do I access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?
Apply for the FAFSA Online Filing electronically increases the accuracy of your application, saves mailing time, and
reduces the processing time to about two weeks. The electronic version may be submitted online at the U.S. Department of
Education website, www.fafsa.ed.gov.
How do I access the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) for international students?
Apply for the TASFA by downloading the form at www.collegefortexans.com. The completed and signed TASFA form must
be submitted to the TSU Office of Financial Aid for processing.
Does receiving student loans disqualify me from receiving a scholarship award?
No, students with loans are eligible to receive a scholarship award and may be used to reduce their loan amount.
May I use my scholarship funds for the summer sessions?
No; scholarship funds can only be used during the fall and spring semesters.
If I have a previous semester outstanding balance, may I use my scholarship award to cover that balance?
No; scholarship funds cannot be used to cover a previous semester outstanding balance, nor can they be applied retroac-
tively. Scholarship funds must be used and applied to a student’s account in the semester in which they are awarded.
When are tuition waivers available and are they guaranteed?
Tuition waivers are available to scholarship recipients at the beginning of the fall semester and are awarded for the entire
academic year, but are not guaranteed.
What is the benefit of a tuition waiver?
The tuition waiver enables non-resident scholarship recipient’s tuition to be converted to in-state tuition.
If I am awarded the business scholarship, do I have to re-apply every year?
No, recipients only apply once and are automatically considered for the following years’ award.
Can I be purged from classes (Banner system) if my scholarship funds are not posted when classes start?
Yes; it is the recipient’s responsibility to pay at least 50% of tuition and fees, apply for a payment deferment, or arrange for
installment payments in order to not be purged from Banner by the purge date.
How will I receive communication about my JHJ scholarship award?
Scholarship information will be communicated via recipient’s email address(es) provided to Texas Southern University.
How do I access my TSU student email account?
To access your TSU student email account, visit www.tsu.edu, click My TSU Web and login to the current TSU student My TSU
Web portal. Once you have logged on to your student account, there is an email icon in the upper right hand corner of the
screen. There you will be able to send and receive emails from your TSU student email account.
How will I receive my scholarship funds?
Scholarship funds will be posted directly to recipient’s TSU student account. 2/2015
