The RF Transistor MRF646 used in the VHF 30W Power Amplier is obsolete. A
new transistor MRF1946 has been tested and provides acceptable performance in
the 136–150 MHz, 150–162 MHz and 162–174 MHz bands.
Pre-CO ampliers containing the obsolete MRF646 transistor require an RF Input
Power of 2–4W. Ampliers containing the new MRF1946 transistor require an RF
Input Power of 2–6W. Concerns have been raised that users who have product with
the obsolete transistor and also product with the new transistor may use a 6W input
and blow the ampliers requiring a 4W input.
Look for the label on the front panel of the 30W VHF Power Amplier. If the
label reads “Do Not Exceed 6 Watts Input Power” (see Figure 1), the amplier
contains the new transistor. The 6W model has unique alignment instructions and
performance specications. Refer to the manual, IM71-001 VHF AMP-2 30W Power
Amplier Instruction Manual Version 2-0-0, which was shipped with this model.
