All of the GDX5 range of door entry systems can have video
facilities incorporated into them.
Video pictures can be provided by integrated CCD cameras housed
within the entrance panels themselves or can be provided by
externally housed cameras located as required around the
entrances to the building with signals fed directly into the GDX5
door entry system.
The addition of video facilities directly into the GDX5 door entry
system itself however enhances security by allowing the user the
benefit of a visual identification of any visitor before admitting them
to the premises.
The GDX5 range of video handsets and apartment stations
incorporate a 4” Colour TFT Screen that offers a clear, full colour,
high definition image with a wide viewing angle for ease of use.
Each video unit has user adjustable colour and brightness facili-
ties to
allow picture optimisation to match the surrounding light
conditions within the dwelling.
Depending on the range of GDX5 door entry system selected up to
four simultaneous video channels can be used within a block (Lite
Systems - 2 Channels and Full Systems - 4 Channels) to allow
simultaneous access control of multiple doors within a block.
Audio and video handsets can be mixed on the same system to
cater for instances where there is a requirement for higher video
security for more vulnerable dwellings but where audio would
suffice for the majority of dwellings.
As well as the provision of video pictures to the tenants locally
these video pictures can be utilised for monitoring and
identification within a central control or concierge scheme
allowing full visual verification before visitor access is allowed
by staff.
The GDX5 concierge software platform can also be interfaced with
3rd party CCTV equipment to provide event driven camera
switching to synchronise operation of the door entry and CCTV
schemes implemented. This would allow for example calls from
audio panels or activated remote alarms to automatically switch
CCTV monitors to the correct camera feed for that audio panel or
area.

Proximity access token fobs provide ease of access to blocks for
residents and authorised personnel whilst restricting access to
areas such as communal work areas or car park barriers. Lost keys
are easily deleted or replaced without the need to replace expensive
door locks thereby offering a valuable ROI from reduced maintenance
and administration costs.
Within the GDX5 range there are three available options for the
provision of proximity token access facilities (the PAC and Standalone
Indigo options are covered in more detail on pages 13 & 15 of this
catalogue):
Indigo integrated within GDX5 Door Entry
PAC integrated within GDX5 Door Entry
Standalone Indigo Proximity Access
Traditionally adding proximity access control facilities into a door
entry system requires the addition of a separate proximity access
controller onto the door entry system. These are then interfaced
together resulting in additional cabling, increased equipment and
installation costs, increased maintenance complexity and increased
spares holdings. In contrast, as the Indigo proximity access control
is integrated completely into the GDX5 door entry system itself, this
avoids the unnecessary complexity and expense of interfacing two
separate systems together.
Token fob administration can then be carried out directly from the
GDX5 entrance panel by means of unique master tokens. This
removes any requirement for qualified personnel to access electrical
control equipment to administer fobs. Lost master tokens can also
be replaced on-site by maintenance personnel without the need for
resident token replacement or manufacturer support to do so.
A major advantage of this integrated solution is that it is retrospectively
upgradeable to central administration without need to recall token
fobs from the fob holders – once the stock of managed properties
reaches a point that central administration is considered a necessity
no change of equipment on site is required to do so and it can be
achieved without token recall.
Central token fob administration can be carried out from a PC based
central administration software platform over the mobile GSM
network or from a GDX5 Concierge software central control platform
that can also be added to provide full audio control, event monitoring,
alarm monitoring & event reporting facilities as well.

Standalone Indigo Proximity
Access Range
Proximity access token fobs provide ease of access to blocks
for residents and authorised personnel whilst restricting access
to areas such as communal work areas or car park barriers. Lost
keys are easily deleted or replaced without the need to replace
expensive door locks thereby offering a valuable ROI from reduced
maintenance and administration costs.
Within the GDX5 range there are three available options for the
provision of proximity token access facilities (The Integrated
Indigo and PAC options are covered in more detail on Pages 9 and
13 of this catalogue):
Indigo integrated within GDX5 Door Entry
PAC integrated within GDX5 Door Entry
Standalone Indigo Proximity Access
The Indigo standalone range allows for the easy addition of
proximity access facilities onto existing audio door entry systems
whether GDX or other manufacturers without the need to replace
the existing door entry equipment.
The 133 programming unit is for administering tokens for part no’s 131 and 151.
The 138 internal reader controller can be used for both administering tokens for
Part no’s 131 and 151 and as a door reader controlling a lock release itself.

GDX5 Concierge Central Control Software
OVERVIEW
The GDX5 Concierge Central Control software allows full control of the
GDX5 Door Entry system by providing control and administration of all
functionality within the door entry and access control systems installed
within the residential blocks.
MULTIPLE OPERATOR WORKSTATIONS
If required, multiple operator workstations can be located in several
locations either on or off site. As the software is Microsoft® Windows® PC
operating system based this allows for standard networking
implementations to be utilised to do so. Connection can be made via a
variety of options including local or wide area networks, wireless links,
ADSL connections or bre-optic backbones.
TENANT RECORD & PROXIMITY TOKEN ADMINISTRATION
The software allows various elds of tenant information to be recorded
within it that are automatically displayed on the operator screens when
calls are made or received. It can also be utilised for the central
administration of proximity access token fobs issued to tenants within the
blocks. The solution does however offer a major advantage over
virtually all other systems on the market in that it utilises a single
database record for both tenant and token information together
rather than separate databases created by interfacing two different door
entry and access control packages together.
This truly integrated solution offers administration of both tenant and
token information from a single database record for each dwelling as
opposed to attempting to maintain two separate records thereby
removing the possibility of two different unsynchronised records as well
as saving time in maintaining records on a day to day basis.
SOFTWARE FUNCTIONALITY
The software is user friendly and intuitive to use as it is designed with
layout and menu operation similar to most Windows® environment
software - so no special training is required other than basic operator
skills. Various levels of user permission can be setup within the concierge
software to restrict by operator password access to functionality such as
for example:
Operator door entry call control
Proximity token access administration
Tenant record administration
Engineering control
DOOR ENTRY CALL CONTROL
The software permits either full intercept control of all system audio
calls (Control Mode) or simply the monitoring of calls without
intervention (Monitor Mode). This mode is selectable on a block by block
or even dwelling by dwelling basis. The following can be controlled or
monitored:
Door to dwelling calls
Door to concierge call
Concierge to dwelling calls
Dwelling to concierge callback requests
PA audio Intercoms within communal areas such as lifts or foyers
ALARM MONITORING FACILITIES
The software also allows for the live monitoring of common area and
dwelling alarm inputs that can be utilised for as examples:
Smoke, Panic, Temperature and Hypothermia alarms
Security contacts
Stair lighting, boiler failure, water overow and lift failure alarms
EVENT LOGGING & ARCHIVING
All system events are logged by the software allowing the capture and
time stamping of all events such as for example:
Door entry call trafc
Proximity token access usage
Alarm events
Concierge operator event handling
The software comes with a series of standard prewritten reports for the
analysis of these logged system events, such as the following report
examples:
Door calls to particular ats
Proximity Token usage
Dwelling to concierge callback requests
These event logs or event reports can be printed off or electronically
archived if required for a permanent record.
SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS
Remote engineering system diagnostics can be performed from the
central software to assist in preventative maintenance and the
identication of any system issues within the remote blocks. This will
assist engineering maintenance staff and reduce any system maintenance
costs and downtimes.
ADDITIONAL SYSTEM OPTIONS
There are several additional options that can be incorporated into the
overall system design to provide additional capacity or ease of use:
The addition of a Touchscreen monitor to the operator
workstation allows for greater operator freedom
Additional operator workstations can be added either on-site
or remotely for large sites or to allow exible operator shift
patterns
An administration workstation can be added either on-site or remotely
for updating tenant records, running event reports and controlling the
issuing of proximity access token fobs

GDX5 Token Administration Control Software
OVERVIEW
Within the GDX5
Concierge Central Control
software package there
is the facility to centrally
administer proximity
access token fobs issued
to the tenants within the
blocks. This can be used in
conjunction with the full
concierge audio control
monitoring facility to
monitor the door entry
system or it can be used
simply to provide cost effective remote administration of the integrated
Indigo proximity token access fobs within the blocks.
TENANT RECORD & PROXIMITY TOKEN ADMINISTRATION
The solution offers a major advantage over virtually all other systems on
the market in that it utilises a single database record for both tenant
and token information together rather than separate databases
created by interfacing two different door entry and access control
packages together.
This truly integrated solution offers administration of both tenant and
token information from a single database record for each dwelling as
opposed to attempting to maintain two separate records thereby
removing the possibility of two different unsynchronised records as well
as saving time in maintaining records on a day to day basis.
The database is constructed to match the required layout of the specic
site. Token fobs issued are recorded against the dwelling they are issued
to and multiple tenant records can be created within each dwelling to
identify which tenant within the dwelling a particular token has been
issued to. When combined with the use of coloured coded tokens that
can also be logged within the tenant record this provides an extremely
effective method of controlling and identifying issued token fobs.
Database elds are provided to allow the creation of detailed tenant
record databases to assist concierge or housing staff. These elds include
the following:
Surname
Forename
Relationship
Emergency Contact
Doctor’s Details
Car Registration
Additional Information
Condential Information
Token Colour Identier
SOFTWARE FUNCTIONALITY
The software is user friendly and intuitive to use. Various levels of user
permission can be setup within the software to restrict by operator
password access to different functionality.
Within the token administration software the following functionality is
provided:
Add user tokens remotely as required
Delete user tokens remotely as required
Create access groups covering multiple blocks to assign to user tokens
to save repeat token additions
Add Staff tokens covering one, several or all blocks
Ability to “Tag” individual tokens to alert the concierge of their use
without blocking the access rights of the token
Ability to mark “Missing” individual tokens to alert the concierge of
their use whilst blocking the access rights of the token
Ability to search for particular tokens within database records if found
and handed in to identify the token owner
EVENT LOGGING & ARCHIVING
Token access proximity usage can be logged by the software allowing the
recording and time stamping of all events. This will be possible on a live
basis if on permanent data connection or remotely for later retrieval if
required if on dial-up data connection.
The software comes with a series of standard pre-written reports for the
analysis of these logged system events, such as the following report
examples:
Reports on overall proximity token usage
Reports on specic proximity token usage
Reports to identify “Unused Tokens” over a specied period of time
These event logs or event reports can be printed off or electronically
archived if required for a permanent record.
PERMANENT CONNECTION
When used in conjunction with full concierge facilities a permanent
connection to the blocks allows the live administration of token access
fobs as required. This permanent connection also facilitates the logging
of all token access events for later analysis if required.
DIAL-UP CONNECTION
When used for remote administration without a permanent connection
then dialling in by GSM modem to specic blocks facilitates the download
of proximity token updates to the remote blocks as required. This also
allows the selective upload of stored event transactions from a remote
block for analysis if for instance there is an incident within the block.

GDX5 Technical Tips
Numbering
Each entrance panel and linecard on a system needs to have a unique
number identifying it. Entrance panels start at Door Number 0 and the
linecards also start at Linecard 0. So a system with two entrance panels
and three linecards will have a Door 0, Door 1, Linecard 0, Linecard 1 and
Linecard 2.
Indigo stand-alone readers are numbered as Doors. For proper
operation of the Indigo reader the system must have an
entrance panel or stand-alone reader numbered as Door 0.
Audio channels start at Audio Channel 1. On a lite system only two audio
channels are available (Channels 1 and 2). On a full system there are seven
audio channels available (Channels 1 to 7).
CAN Connections and Balancing
For communication between various parts of the system a 2 wire serial
data bus (CAN) is used. Each part of the system will have a CANH and a
CANL connections. There is no cross in these connections and CANH wires
directly to CANH and CANL wires directly to CANL. To balance the CAN bus
two header termination links must be tted. These are normally tted on the
rst entrance panel (Door 0) and the rst linecard (Linecard 0) on the system.
A balanced CAN bus will measure approximately 60 ohms across the CANH
and CANL connections on any part of the system when powered down.
COMMS errors can occur if there are not two termination links installed.
Audio Connections
Audio channels on a GDX5 system consist of 4 wire audio (TX+, TX-, RX+,
RX-). Between entrance panels, high rise exchanges, low rise controllers
and landing junction boxes the wiring is the same for each audio channel.
The audio cabling is crossed as follows:
TX+ connects to RX+
TX- connects to RX-
RX+ connects to TX+
RX- connects to TX-
The audio wiring should use appropriate CW1308 cable with 2 pairs of the
cable assigned to each audio channel. The cable normally includes a pair
for the CAN connections.
Audio Handset Connections
Between a linecard and an audio handset connect terminals 1,2,3,4 on the
appropriate linecard port directly to terminals 1,2,3,4 on the handset using
3 pair CW1308 cable. The maximum distance the handset can be from the
linecard is 50 metres.
Video Handset Connections
Two separate 3 pair CW1308 cables should be used for a video handset.
One for the audio side, which should be wired into the linecard as per
an audio only handset. The second cable is used to power and supply a
video signal to the handset and runs from the Video Switching Card. The
connections are one to one and are 15V, 0V, Video Signal+ and Video
Signal-. On long cable or noisy environments a coaxial cable could be used
to run the video signals.
Slave Handset Connection
A parallel slave handset can be added onto a main handset. Remove the
links LK1 and LK2 in the slave handset only and connect wires 1,2,3,4 and
“EXT PRIV+” between the two handsets.
Only one parallel slave handset can be added per main handset. A main
video handset cannot have a slave video handset but can have a slave audio
handset.
Combined Beacon Sounder Connections
A combined beacon sounder unit can be wired into a GDX5 handset by
connecting wires 3, 4, TR and EXT SND between them using CW1308 cable.
Changing Entrance Panel Settings
Various settings including door and audio channel numbering, service
times, time and date settings, etc. can be altered at the GDX5 entrance
panel. These settings can be displayed and changed by way of the four
small buttons visible through the hole in the plastic carrier - which are
reached by removing the entrance panel button faceplate. These four
buttons from the left hand side have the following functions - Settings
Display, Increment Setting, Decrement Setting, Enter New Setting. Pressing
the Settings Display button repeatedly will bring up each setting in turn.
Before any setting can be changed a security link must be moved before
the Increment, Decrement or Enter buttons can be used - link PG10 should
always normally sit in the position labeled SP (Settings Protect) – to adjust
any settings move this link into the position labeled SE (Settings Enable).
This link change will then allow the Increment and Decrement buttons to
vary the setting – pressing the Enter button will save the new setting. This
new setting will not be saved until the Enter button has been pressed. The
settings routine will time out 8 seconds after the last button press. Panel
operation will not return to normal until the security link has been replaced
again to secure the settings again.
Linecard Settings
Linecard settings including privacy time settings can be changed in a similar
way to the entrance panels using the four small buttons immediately below
the LCD display. Again to allow changes to the settings a link (LK6) has
to moved from the PROTECT to the ENABLE setting. Make sure the link is
returned to the ENABLE position once changes have been made.
Indigo Entrance Panel Adding A Token
Present an editor token to the panel reader and “EDIT ADD MODE” will be
displayed on the LCD. Press any button on the panel and the rst available
token location will be displayed in the format “0017 : --------“. Present the
token to be added to the panel reader and the token ID will be displayed
on the LCD, the token will be added and the next available token location
will be displayed automatically. Continue adding tokens as required by
presenting them to the panel reader. When all tokens required have been
added, present the editor token to the panel reader again to exit from
editor mode. A count of the tokens stored in the controller will be displayed
automatically as the controller exits from editor mode.

Audio Channels
The GDX5 control equipment is extremely exible in terms of how the
audio switching paths within it can be factory congured. The term
Audio Channels is used to denote the number of simultaneous audio
conversations that can be congured within the equipment at any
one time. These audio channels can be used for either Entrance Panel
or Concierge audio conversations within the GDX5 system and are
programmed and xed as a factory option.
CAN Data Bus
The GDX5 system uses a 2 wire digital databus technology known as
Controller Area Network (CAN) to communicate between the various
control cards within the system. Each of these control cards are factory
programmed with a unique card address to facilitate this communication.
GDX5 Indigo Proximity Token Range
Many door entry systems require an access control facility. The GDX Indigo
range can be integrated directly into our GDX5 door entry equipment to
provide this access control functionality. The range consists of Entrance
Panels with built in access control, Stand-Alone Readers, Programming

In order to assist with Equality Act / DDA legislation compliance
the GDX5 range of equipment can be supplied with the following
enhancements to assist with system operation for those with
disabilities.
Yellow Button Bezels (Option)
As an additional aid to the partially
sighted the entrance panel buttons can
incorporate a bright yellow bezel around
each button to make it more highly
visible. On Digital Panels the No.5 button
can also include a “raised pip” to allow
keypad layout to be easily followed.
Raster Braille (Option)
Entrance panels can incorporate
Raster Braille for all buttons and
block addresses engraved on the
entrance panel.
Raster Braille is a patented
technology for producing braille
signage using perfectly rounded
domed Braille dots that complies with all of the latest standards.
Traditionally routed Braille on steel entrance panels does not in all cases
comply with all of the latest legislation due to the proximity of the steel
edges to the Braille itself.
Raised Symbol On Lexan (Standard)
As an aid to the partially sighted
the vandal resistant lexan covering
the proximity reader incorporates a
tactile raised symbol to allow easy
identication of where to present
token fobs to gain access to the
building.
Backlit LCD On Entrance Panel (Standard)
As an aid to the hard of hearing all GDX5 Entrance Panels include a
backlit LCD to provide user notication and guidance of each step of the
process whilst in use.
The following system ancillaries can also be provided for
incorporation within the GDX5 system to improve the system
accessibility for those with disabilities.
Extension Sounders For The Hard of Hearing
Flashing Beacons For The Hard of Hearing
Inductive Coupler Within Handset Handpiece For Use With “T” Position
On Hearing Aids
Please see page 14 for details of ancillaries
Equality Act / Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Information
Legislation
Equality legislation has been in place in the UK since the mid-1970’s. Over
time the laws have become more complex as our understanding of what’s
meant by equality has become more sophisticated.
From 1 October 2010, the Equality Act replaced most of the Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA) and is a vital piece of legislation to bear in mind
when specifying products for buildings. However the Disability Equality Duty
in the DDA continues to apply.
The legislation stipulates that a disabled person cannot be restricted from
gaining access to a site to obtain ‘goods or services’. This includes people
who use wheelchairs, blind and partially sighted people, deaf people, people
with arthritis, people with long-term illnesses and people with learning
disabilities. This obviously has an impact on the installation of new and
existing Access Control Systems and these issues need to be considered at
any Public building.
Implementation
In the case of disability employers and service providers are under a duty
to make reasonable adjustments to their premises to overcome barriers
experienced by disabled people.
Problems and solutions vary from business to business. The law says you can
make the alterations in four ways:
Remove the barrier or obstacle
Altering such as adding a ramp, clearer signage, counter/reception heights
altered etc.
Find a means of avoiding the problem - for example, reconguring the
internal layout of a building
Providing a service or access by reasonable alternative means, offering
a home service, installing call bells at approved heights, adjusting door
opening strengths etc.
What is reasonable will depend on all the circumstances, including the cost
of an adjustment, the potential benet it might bring to others (ramps and
automatic doors for instance benet those with small children or heavy
luggage), the resources an organisation has and how practical the changes
are. An inexhaustive list of factors that might be taken into account in
consideration of what is reasonable would be:
Whether taking any particular steps would be effective in overcoming the
difculty that disabled people face in accessing the services in question
The extent to which it is practicable for the service provider to take the
steps
The nancial and other costs of making the adjustment
The extent of any disruption which taking the steps would cause
The extent of the service provider’s nancial and other resources
The amount of any resources already spent on making adjustments
The availability of nancial or other assistance
Summary
The legislation does not require the adoption of any one particular way of
meeting obligations to disabled users. The focus of the legislation is on results.
The aim is to make services accessible to disabled people or to ensure that a
disabled person is not at any substantial disadvantage. Taking positive steps
to improve accessibility mitigates these risks and can create real benet. The
legislation does not prescribe what approach the service provider should use.
However, the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) believes that good practice
and the most sensible approach will be to remove or alter the physical
barrier to the service wherever this is possible. This is undoubtedly the most
effective long term solution for both the service provider and disabled people.
As always with such complex and ever changing legislation it is essential to
seek professional advice from the appropriate bodies on the interpretation of
requirements to ensure full compliance.
