A widespread call for increased access
and control
Executives worldwide tell us tha t balTiers to corporate success must be removed. They want fast,
reliable and easy access to information within the ir
enterprises. They also seek the freedom to share data
among manufacturing, marketing, fin a nce, head
office, suppliers and customers. And they want to
manage and control the diverse syste ms throughout
their e nterprises.
IBM listened carefully as business leaders around the
globe told us their concerns, needs and requirements.
From the m, we form ed the foundation for a new era in
computing.
With the advent of IBM's ne w era in computing you
can equip your enterprise with the power to increase
productivity, red uce costs, develop global markets,

Innovative syst e m s and services to advance
your business vision
Scenarios suc h as these can be multiplied many
times, depending on country, industry and bus iness
strategy. In all cases, customer value drives our
efforts to help you realise your enterpri se goals.
No maller what your industry or business pla n may
be, here are some of the ways tha t we can he lp you
empower your enterprise:

Firstly, there is the growth potential and pedormance
power of the new IBM System/390 computing famil y.
System/390 includes the ne w Enterprise System/9000
(ES/9000) * processor models, as well as enhanced
system hardware and ne w operating syste m software.

Sys tem/390's broad range of processor models offers
high pet{ormance and significant grow th potential,
enri ching yo ur ex isting in ves tment in systems, data,
ap plications and pe rsonne l.
Your e mployees can use the System/390 famil y to
gain wider, more comprehensive information access,
within and beyond enterprise boundaries . Thi s gain
is the result of our enriching and streamlining three
operating systems - MVS, VM and VSE - and using
common communication protocols and network
architectures in the design of our new sys tems.
You can also gain a more comprehensive managerial
reach over your network performance and resources.
This capability derives from ne twork solutions tha t
integrate diverse local area ne tworks and offer
comprehensive graphic views of the resources they
contain ... ne w system management directions .. . a nd
va ried security options.

Accommodate cooperative and distributed
processing

The new IBM ES/9000 processor mode ls and operating system software also acco mmodate cooperative
and distributed processing. As a res ult, our new
systems move you closer to the da y when any individual computing syste m or workstation in yo ur enterprise can interac t with a ny other - even if you have
hundreds of local area ne tworks, each with hundreds
of workstations.
Your information systems organisation can use
standard IBM platforms to develop enterpri se-wide
applications and link appropriate entet·prise personnel with your outside clients and s uppliers . And
workgroups in one e nterprise department or division
can share information with those in other departments
or di visions, regardless of whether they are on the
other side of the si te, across the country or in a
remote corner of the globe.

Key computing
attributes
of the
empowered
enterprise

The possibilities
available through fibre
optics mean a system's
I/ O d e vices no longer
have to be concentrated
in one place

Operational flexibility
Your IBM System/390-empowered enterprise can
accommodate changes far more flexibly than ever
before. Applications can be shifted from one la rge
host system to another ... d evices such as disks and
tapes can be changed with minimal disrup tion to
regular operations ... and computing resources
can be located wherever space permits.
The fibre optic technology underlying channel
connections in our systems and controllers requires
far less room, a n appeal ing alternative to the limits
imposed by the heavy, bulky cabling tha t has long
serv ed the industry. Our new channel technology
also permits data transmission over distances of up to
9 kilome ters (5.4 miles) - a signifi cant increase over
the former 122 meter (400 feet) standard. As a
result, you can now locate system processors in one
part of your business complex, and de vices for those
same systems can occupy s pace in anoth er building
or complex. You gain furth er fl ex ibility because
you can access d ata from a vari ety of systems a nd
locations .
IBM's new systems also provide your enterprise
with a cooperative processing fa cility, coupling the
benefits of personal computing with the peIiormance,
power and control of host-based computing. Cooperative process ing allows applications to be split between
workstations and hosts .

Increased security options to protect your
enterprise
You want your informa tion to be accessible; yet, th e
more critical th at information is to th e operati on, th e
more sensitive it becomes . The Sys tem/ 390-empowered enterprise can pro vide the d egree of security
protection you require, at worksta tion, host a nd
network levels, combining ease of use with systemmanaged securit y.
Broader, simpler system and network
manage ment
Our new products are d esigned to res pond to your requirement for broader, simpler, enterprise-wide
syste m and network ma nagement. If improved
operational management , lower costs, and increased
system av ailability and responsiveness are high on
your age nda, our new produc ts and services can meet
your needs.

Powerful system growth and expansion
The 18 models in the IBM Enterprise System/9000
(ES/9000) family offer outstanding room for growth .
Thi s family includes compac t, rack-mounted models,
as well as both air-cooled and water- cooled, framemounted models, all sharing a common architec ture.
IBM's expanded VSE/ ESA software offering for the
ES/9 000 famil y accommodates fast business growth,
while providing the option to migrate your enterprise
more easil y into the MVS/ESA operating system
environmen t. The ES/9000 family offers many
upgrade options from your existing systems,
enhancing your IBM computing investme nt.

fast storage access, they can ac t as both compute- and
fil e-servers, working with hi gh-speed networks and
powe lful programmable worksta tions.
The ne w ES/9000 famil y offers significantly improved
scalar capa bilities and, on most models, a vector
facility as well. This increases high-speed computational capabilities for more numerically intensive
scientific and technical applications. Our largest
ES/9000 model can be expected to offer from 2.0 to
2.8 times the computing capability of our c urrent
largest sys te m with the Vector Facility.

Advanced applications
Informa tion processing has moved from automating
' back-office' applications such as accounting ... to
front-offi ce applications such as on-line reservations
systems ... to advanced appli cations that can give
you a competiti ve edge, like image processing and
computer-integrated manufacturing.
Image processing for increased productivity
One leading bank has described the pote ntial of
image processing in the finan cial community as
" the most significant banking de velopment since
the computer" . Today, banks can capture cheque
images at the rate of 40 per second. And now, IBM
is ma king such applications more widely available
by basing them on standard syste m platforms.
As a result, image processing is gaining popularity
in other industries and practices as well. Advanced
image processing can include photos, engineering
drawings or even medical images, as well as cheques
and paper. This advanced application area offers the
potential to increase transac tion volumes handled by
indi vidual employees by as much as 30 percent.

Expanded capahility for technical applications
Exec utives are some times surprised to learn tha t
technical computing procedures are as useful in
commercial applications, s uch as finan cial forecasting and produc tion scheduling, as they are in complex scie ntific a pplications. Such applications often
require the processing of vast quantities of stored
information. Because the ES/9000 systems also offer

A well-de signed conce pt
