HARMAN KARDON®
AVR 2600/AVR 3600/AVR 360/AVR 460
SOFTWARE UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS
Harman Kardon is pleased to offer this product upgrade, which improves the performance of your AVR and
addresses software issues. Unlike many consumer products, which are designed with “fixed” memory, the
AVR 2600, AVR 3600, AVR 360 and AVR 460 feature flash memory that is upgradable by loading the new
software on a standard USB memory stick and docking it in the receiver’s front-panel USB port.

What this Upgrade Addresses
This new software upgrades your receiver’s HDMI to HDMI v. 1.4a with 3D. It also makes other
improvements to HDMI performance, and includes all the benefits of the previous software upgrade for
these models.

Important Note
This software is specially designed for use with Harman Kardon AVR 2600, AVR 3600, AVR 360 and AVR
460 receivers. Use with any other models or brands may cause damage to the product. DO NOT USE
THIS SOFTWARE WITH ANY OTHER PRODUCTS.

How Can I Tell if My Receiver Needs this Upgrade?
This software upgrade is the following version:
V 1.1
AFW v1.6.1.1
USB Version
17-03-2009 02
DSP VERSION
1.1.1
Depending on when your AVR was manufactured, it may have already had the latest software installed at
the factory. To see if its software requires an upgrade, please follow these steps:
• With the AVR turned on, press the remote’s Setup button, and then press 1-2-3-0-OK on the remote.
• If the second line of the receiver’s front-panel display reads AFW v1.6.1.1, your receiver has this latest
software version and no further action is needed.
• If the display’s second line shows any other readout, please proceed with the upgrade.

System Requirements
To install the software upgrade, you will need a USB memory stick with at least 400Mb of available
storage capacity. We recommend that there be no other files in the main “root” directory the memory
device. If the root directory does contain any existing files, we recommend that you either remove them
or save them to a separate folder on the memory stick. The presence of any other files with a “.bin”
extension in the main “root” directory of the memory stick may cause the update process to fail
and may possibly cause damage to your AVR that is not covered by the warranty.

Installation Instructions
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING.

Upgrading your receiver is easy, but for the upgrade to work properly, it is important to carefully follow the
instructions below. The upgrade will take less than 15 minutes, and once it begins you must complete the entire
process in one session. Please allow sufficient time to complete all the steps.
Installing the new software will erase all information in your AVR’s system memory, which means that
any configuration settings or tuner presets that you have entered will be lost. To make it easier to
reestablish the settings after completing the upgrade, the upgrade download includes a worksheet that
you can print-out and use to write down your current system configurations in the provided spaces.
1. If you have not already downloaded the upgrade file to your computer, do so now. Save the file in an
easy-to-find location.
2. Unzip the file you downloaded. It will contain four items: • an “Instructions.pdf” file, • a “Settings
Worksheets.pdf” file, • an “avr3601.bin” file, • a “torino.bin” file.
If you wish to have a printed copy of these instructions available to follow as you install the software,
save a copy of the “Upgrade Instructions.pdf” file to your computer for printout. If you want to write down
your system configurations, also save a copy of the “Settings Worksheets.pdf” file to your computer.
NOTE: Although one of the upgrade files is named “avr3601.bin”, it is correct for the AVR 3600,
AVR 2600, AVR 460 and AVR 360 model receivers.
3. Copy the “avr3601.bin” and “torino.bin” files to the root directory of a USB memory stick.
Before proceeding, make sure that your AVR is connected to a TV or video display so you can see its onscreen menu (OSD). You will use the OSD to perform the following upgrade steps in your receiver.
4. Insert the USB memory stick into the receiver’s front-panel USB port. (If necessary, remove the frontpanel connector cover to expose the port.)
5. Press the remote’s Setup button. The OSD will appear on the connected TV/video display.
6. Scroll-down to and select System. The System Settings screen will appear.
7. Scroll-down to System Info and select Upgrade Software. The System Upgrade screen will appear.
8. Select Continue, and then select Continue again. The receiver will search the USB stick for the new
.bin files.
9. Once the receiver detects the new files, select Continue again. The receiver’s front-panel display will
go blank and the volume control will slowly blink on and off. The front-panel display will show a progress
report as the upgrade is carried out.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT TURN OFF OR UNPLUG THE RECEIVER AT THIS TIME! Doing so could cause
damage to your receiver that is not covered by the unit’s warranty.
10. When the receiver has completed the upgrade it will briefly go into the Standby mode. DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO TURN THE RECEIVER ON AT THIS TIME.
11. The receiver will automatically turn on, and then will momentarily reset.
12. After a moment, the receiver’s front-panel display will read “Successful Continue”, and the OSD will
display “Software version 1.1, Continue.”
13. Press the OK button (select Continue). The OSD will shut off and the upgrade is now complete.
Before using your receiver, you should re-enter the input and speaker configuration settings and tuner
presets that you copied to your owner’s manual.
