Scottish poet Robert Burns said ”Look around through Nature’s range. Nature’s mighty law is change.” When he said
that, he must have had this past year at the Y of Central Maryland in mind! Think of it. This year our leadership
changed, blending both seasoned Y professionals with newcomers from the private sector. Our highly decentralized
branch system gave way to a more customer-centric, one Y structure. The structure and focus of our volunteer boards
shifted from branch oversight to community building, outreach and philanthropy. We began to change our approach
to philanthropy with a more unified emphasis on our mission and impact, and our marketing became more defined,
strategic and visible!
All these many changes serve one, very singular purpose: the advancement of our core mission, which, in spite of
what Robert Burns said, will never change!
The Y exists to strengthen our community. We do that in countless ways. The scholarships we give to help children
and adults enjoy our many programs strengthen not only those individuals, but also our entire community. Our
dedication to Head Start and Urban Services serves us all by bolstering those most at risk. Our preschools,

John K. Hoey, President & CEO
and Julie Mercer, Board Chair

before and after school and camp programs enrich thousands of children while allowing their parents to work
knowing their kids are well cared for, properly challenged and nurtured. Our health and wellness centers, classes
and programs generate a cycle of confidence and success that greatly surpasses the cumulative total of pounds
lost or muscles toned.
The Y of Central Maryland is all about relationships. We are well known for fostering the relationship between a
healthy spirit, mind and body. But we are also about the relationship of one person to another; the relationship
between a solid start in life, and a lifetime of success; the relationship between the strength of a single soul, and the
vibrancy of an entire community.
This is the ecosystem of health that is both our honor and mandate to serve.
Join us. Whether as a volunteer, participant, donor or team member, your participation really matters here. It goes
deeper than any single isolated act because each contribution to the Y relates to and uplifts our entire community.

It’s deeper here.

The Y of Central Maryland. It’s deeper here.
With appreciation,

John K. Hoey
President & CEO

and now I know.
It feels a whole lot better.”

• We help roughly
150,000 lives a year
get stronger in spirit,
mind and body.
• Last year, 7,775 babies,
toddlers and children
were nurtured, challenged
and protected in Y
child care and camps.

Spirit, mind and body wellness. Sounds good,
doesn’t it? But what exactly does it mean? What
does it look and feel like? Flip through any
fitness magazine and you’ll see these words
again and again. Spas, resorts, clubs – virtually
every aspect of the fitness industry is using this
language and practicing at least one piece of
the total package.

“ We’re way more than an
exercise class. We’re
a great support
for each other.”

“ 5:30 a.m. the cross trainer,
then spinning class, the
treadmill for 40 minutes, then
floor exercises and the pool
for 45 minutes. It makes
you healthy, keeps
you going, it’s my life
in the morning….”
Sue Harmon, age 77, member

That’s what it’s all about for us. Whether a support

mind and body wellness.

Whether in preschool, Head Start, before and after
school programs, in sports or camping, thousands
of children throughout Central Maryland are
touched by the Y. As the largest provider of child
care in the state, we have an enormous responsibility,
commitment and opportunity that we intend not to
squander. Recognizing and seizing the opportunity
to positively influence lives from the very start is
one of the ways we fulfill our obligation to help
build a stronger, more intellectually, physically and
emotionally fit community. It’s a duty that starts with
the youngest and most vulnerable among us and
never stops.

“ I take them to Y child care
on campus. It’s been real
nice to walk over at lunch.
I’m afraid to say it, but I
almost think they get more
out of coming here
than they would
at home.”
Christopher Swan, PhD
Parent, Y Preschool at UMBC

• Last year we helped 1,200
kids from under-served
neighborhoods beat
the odds.
• We helped 900 children,
90% of whom live at or
below the poverty level,
get a head start on school.
• We helped 4,000 kids
have a summer camp
experience to remember.
• We allocated over
$11 million to provide a
Y experience for people
who could not afford it.

Community building. It’s another one of those
phrases that sounds good but is easy to bypass.
This is what the Y of Central Maryland does every
day in a very real sense. We bring together young
and old from every walk of life. We help realize
dreams. In some cases, we help instill dreams never
thought possible and then help make them happen.

“ Once you get to them
(young people) and
they trust you, you’ve
got them for life.”
Gregory Branch, Pro Baseball Scout
Urban Services Volunteer

There are plenty of wonderful organizations to
support who ask for your heart, your mind and
your treasure. By connecting to the Y of Central
Maryland, you are participating in a truly unusual
organization that has the power to change lives on
a scale that can effect not just single lives (though
we do), but can strengthen the backbone of entire
communities.
We live in the wealthiest state in the nation. The
challenge is that a great deal of human service
need still exits. The opportunity, of course, is ours
to make the wealthiest state also the healthiest.
We can do this.
Join us.

“ I actually saw, through Youth
and Government, how my
community was and how I can
respect other people’s views.
I have learned how to make
the community better. Now I
want to be a politician thanks
to the Y. My dream?
Possibly Governor
or US Senator.”
James Torrence, Y of Central Maryland
Youth & Government participant
