Timely News for Members of the Wunita Gokhos Lodge, Order of the Arrow The Owl’s Nest August, September & October 2017 2017 Unit Election and Summer Camp Call-Out Recap Fall Ordeal Information & Registration THE OWL’S NES This past winter and spring our Lodge Election teams conducted 55 unit elections. At summer camp, our ceremonies team participated in seven call-out ceremonies. From Our Lodge Chief Brothers, As we approach the 2017-2018 scouting year, it is the perfect time to reflect on the success of our Lodge. The Brotherhood Conversion weekend, an informative LLD, a great banquet honoring our fellow arrowmen, a fun Fellowship, and a productive Spring Ordeal all set the stage for cheerful service throughout the year. As we move forward, I anticipate continued success within the lodge during our upcoming Fall Ordeal and on into the future. With the new year soon to be upon us, some in the Lodge are aware that I will be heading off to college and therefore unable to pursue reelection as your Chief. Please accept my sincerest appreciation for the incredible opportunity to lead the Lodge this past year. Continued on page 5 Between February and May, trained unit elections teams visited 55 Troops throughout or Council to conduct unit elections. In all, 120 youth were elected and 22 adults were nominated into the Order. We look forward to welcoming our newest members at the Fall or Spring Ordeal Weekends. In January, our unit election teams were traind at their Chapter Meetings and unit election went into full swing in March through May. Thank you to ALL our unit election teams for coordinating and conducting elections! We would like to offer a big THANK YOU to our 2017 Summer Camp “Camp Chiefs” Ben Rita and Orion Jones. They ensured the The August/September/October 2017 Owl’s Nest (page 6) ceremony principals knew their lines, contacted unit leaders as they arrived in camp to confirm that those elected would be present at call-outs, built the camp fires, cared for the regalia, and collected callBrotherhood out forms after each Conversion ceremony. Kittatinny Lodge #5 was an awesome host in providing superb training, facilities, and great meals! During the Saturday afternoon activities, our Lodge participated in the ceremonies team evaluations and camp-wide games; including vollyball, closestto-the-pin, Lodgeball, frisbee golf and more. In typical fashion, our Lodge took honors in the ceremonies team competition. The closing highlight was when our own Lodge Chief, Collin Heckman, was elected to serve as the Section NE-6B Vice Chief for the 2017/18 year. Congratulations Collin! Welcome Our Newest Members at Our 2017 Spring Ordeal At our Spring Ordeal Weekend held on June 2 through 4th at Camp Bashore, our Lodge welcomed 20 new Ordeal members and 3 new Brotherhood members. Welcome and congratulations to ALL! The service our Lodge provided to Camp Bashore during the weekend included setting up tents, dining flys and cots for the 2017 summer camp season. Members also completed a landscaping project around the pool, concreting posts for dining flies in upper camp and cleaning the dining hall for staff week. We also sent a small contingent to Camp Mack to help set up tents for Cub Scout Summer Camp. In addition to the traditional service we provided to the camps, our Lodge members had a great time in fellowship with other memebers during meals and cracker barrel. As always, the kitchen crew served up new, delicious and filling meals. Thanks to everyone who made this a successful and productive weekend! Lodge welcomes our newest Vigil members The Lodge began our Lodge Fellowship Weekend at Camp Bashore with the induction of our newest Vigil members. The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members for service to lodge, council, and Scouting. Membership cannot be won by a person’s conscious endeavors. The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction and recognition reserved for those Arrowmen who, by reason of exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest, have made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position of office to one or more of the following: Lodge, Order of the Arrow, Scouting community or Scout Camp. 4 Pictured above is our 2017 Vigil Class. The August/September/October 2017 Owl’s Nest Continued from page 1 – CHIEF’S MESSAGE Working with my fellow officers and advisors has been a privilege. I look forward to working with the Lodge in a new way as the Lodge prepares to host Conclave this upcoming year. The Lodge is sure to accomplish great things and I am excited to participate as a member well into the future. As always, the accomplishments of our Lodge depends on our active involvement and if the past year is an indication, Wunita Gokhos Lodge #39 has a bright future. Yours in Scouting, Collin Heckman Lodge Chief 5 Fall Ordeal & Service Weekend at Camp Mack Friday, September 22 through Sunday Morning, September 24 BSA Medical Forms Required on ALL Lodge and Section Weekends! This is a reminder that official BSA Medical Forms are required for all OA weekends for all participants. Although activities on OA weekends are not comparable to high adventure trips, sometimes people get sick or injured -- a nasty cut finger, a fall causing a swollen foot. We want to take the necessary precautions and be ready for that quick trip to the hospital for an x-ray or a few stitches. Should something happen, the Lodge health officer will need your medical form so your parents or guardian can be contacted and the health care providers have your current medical information. If you have a current medical form, there is no need to get another physical, simply make a copy of your form and bring the COPY to the weekend. You can get the copy of your medical form back at the end of the weekend. Medical forms not picked up at the end of the weekend will be shredded. Since medical information can change, the Lodge does NOT keep medical forms from event to event. We want to ensure we have current information. 6 The Fall Ordeal Weekend is the first of our major service weekends. The Lodge typically has a very good turn-out which means we have the opportunity to connect with fellow Brothers we might only get a chance to see at OA events. And equally important, it’s also a time for us to provide service to Camp Mack. Remember, ALL Ordeal, Brotherhood and Vigil members are invited to attend this weekend. We hope to see you there! During the weekend, we will be inducting new Ordeal members into the lodge; and for those of you that have been an Ordeal member for at least 10 months, we will be conducting Brotherhood training and ceremonies. A registration form can be found on the enclosed form sheet. A schedule of events is included below. Please plan to attend and have your registration form into the scout office no later than Septemeber 8, 2017. And don’t forget to bring your HEALTH FORM to the weekend! Please donate some items to the Patch Auction and bring cash with you to Fall Ordeal! The Lodge will also hold a Silent Auction at Fall Ordeal. This auction will feature several unique pieces of Scouting memorabilia and other neat donations. The Lodge is always looking for great donations for both auctions. Proceeds of the auctions benefit the Lodge Scholarship Fund. Lodge Scholarship Fund Many of the fundraising activities we hold at Lodge events throughout the year, including the auction described above, benefit our Lodge Scholarship Fund. This Fund is reserved to help cover costs for Lodge members interested in attending OA High Adventure programs, help reduce costs for members attending NOAC as well as helping defray costs for our youth members who wish to attend Section and National OA events and programs.
