UNSW FACULTY OF ENGINEERING TASTE OF RESEARCH SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS 2018/2019 POSTER PRESENTATION GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS School Poster Presentation Session School Poster Presentation Sessions will be held on Tuesday 5 February 2019, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the relevant Schools. Details of venues will be sent to recipients by email prior to the sessions. Recipients are required to give a 2 minute presentation. The PDF of the submitted poster or one slide will be displayed during the 2 minute presentation. Recipients, Taste of Research School Coordinator(s), and Project Supervisors/Co-supervisors will vote for who represents them by giving a Poster Presentation at the Faculty Poster Presentation Showcase which will be held on Friday 8 February. Selection criteria are included on the next page in this document. Each group will nominate speakers. Faculty Poster Presentation Showcase A Faculty Poster Presentation Showcase will be held on Friday 8 February 2019, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm 9cenues TBC. It is anticipated that some of the Faculty’s industry partners will be invited to attend the Showcase. At the conclusion of the Poster Presentation Showcase, those Taste of Research Scholars who have satisfied all components of the Program will be presented with a Taste of Research Scholarship 2018/19 Certificate. Recipients must use these Poster Presentation Guidelines and Instructions provided in the Induction Pack (emailed to recipients when the Scholarship offer is accepted). Recipients are required to submit their Poster online by 28 January 2019. Role of Recipient • To prepare a technical presentation on a poster for display in limited space. • To support the presentation in person, answering questions from attendees concerning all facets of the project. • To explain how the project has met the requirements for the Scholarship. Role of Supervisor / Project Leader • To support the Recipient’s presentation of their work. • To ask other Recipients about their work. Page 1 of 5 Poster Presentation Guidelines and Instructions – TOR Summer Scholarships 2018/19 Poster Presentation Selection Criteria Posters should be clearly marked with the research theme students wish their poster to be considered for. The three research themes are: 1. Fundamental and Enabling Research Solids and Applied Dynamics Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Engineering Signal Processing & Control Programming Languages and Software Engineering Advanced Materials Design Education Management 2. The Digital Future Embedded Systems and Communications Intelligent & Autonomous Systems Immersive Systems and Virtual Reality Navigation and Earth Observation (NEO) eResearch (Knowledge and Services Engineering) 3. Resources and Infrastructure for the Future Water and Wastewater Engineering Energy Systems, Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Engineering MEMS, Micro & Nano Technologies Advanced Manufacturing and Processing Technologies Structural Engineering, Structures Geomechanics, Geotechnical Engineering Health & Medical Technologies The following criteria will be used to evaluate posters: Content • Aims (clearly stated) • Background & Motivation (relevance of work is clear to a lay person) • Method & Results (concise and convincing) • Conclusions (linked to aims and motivation) Presentation • Layout & Organisation (uses colour, layout and illustrations to enhance understanding and transfer of information) • Written Expression (clear, concise and logical) The nominated students will be required to give a 2 minute presentation on the research work undertaken during the course of the program at the Poster Presentation Showcase on Friday 8 February 2019. Students can use either their Poster or one summary slide for the presentation. Page 2 of 5 Poster Presentation Guidelines and Instructions – TOR Summer Scholarships 2018/19 Poster Presentation Instructions The Poster Presentation Template will be provided with all other documentation when you accept an offer of scholarship. Save the template in a location that suits you; your desktop, A-drive, etc. The poster is designed for A2 size. To print to A4 sizes, select File->Print->Properties and then select A4 paper size. You also need to choose the option scale to fit paper in the Print dialogue box. NB: Please do not change the Page Setup. The Slides sized for: inside Page Setup must remain at Custom. The final printout of your poster will be made by the Faculty Office in A2 size and in colour. You must adhere to the format in the PowerPoint template (e.g. fonts and background should not be altered). You can, of course, change the text content and figures in the template. To get your final poster printed out Print out your poster in A4 on a laser printer and make sure you are satisfied with the format and contents of your poster and the poster is error-free. NB: You must include your supervisor's name in the poster and the research theme you wish your poster to be considered for. Submit your poster online 28 January 2019. Also name your poster file with your name and student number. You must send the poster as a PDF with all fonts and images embedded. If you don’t have Acrobat pro there are a number of free utilities for windows that enable PDF creation. E.g. http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp has a free download of the writer and the converter required. Simply install both and you will be able to print to PDF. Make sure you select iso A2 as the page size and the “scale to fit paper” option (there are some pictures at the end of this document). Check the PDF and submit online if you are happy with it. This information applies to windows users only. NB: Your poster file will NOT be processed if not conforming to the above requirement. Floppy disk, zip disk, or CDROM will not be accepted. Posters must be submitted 28 January 2019. Late posters will not be accepted. Collecting your poster Posters will be displayed on presentation boards by faculty staff 1/2hr prior to the Faculty Poster Presentation Showcase on 8 February. Students should arrive in time to locate their poster. Posters will not be available for collection/viewing prior to the poster presentation. After the Showcase the posters are sent to the School Coordinator. The School may choose to display the posters and/or return the posters to students.
