1. Explain the process of democratic transitions from below and democratic transitions
from above. In what ways do the actions of citizens and regime elites interact with one
another to produce democratic transitions?
2. Explain the ways in which external actors influence democratization from above and
below.

Citations
Any time you are paraphrasing or taking a direct quote from the book or another source,
you need to cite it properly. As a general rule, direct quotations should only be used when
using your own words would cause the information to lose its meaning. Direct quotes should
also be used with caution in short papers because they indicate that you do not understand
the material if used often. The choice of citation style is up to you (APA, MLA, Chicago,
APSA, etc.). Here are examples in APA:
