THE UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE ROOMMATE AGREEMENT Communication is essential when creating a positive living environment with your roommate(s). This can begin by addressing potential problem areas. Completing this document with your roommate(s) will lessen the possibility of conflict and improve communication for an enjoyable living environment Examine each box below and discuss any possible differences with your roommate(s). You may have to compromise, so please be flexible and open, but be assertive regarding your own needs. Once signed, this document constitutes an agreement between roommates. Residence Hall Staff is available for mediation and guidance regarding this agreement, which is kept in the staff office. SECURITY LIFESTYLES An important area that must be agreed upon is to uphold all safety and security measures within the Residence Hall. I agree to close and lock the room and/or apartment door whenever I leave. Other __Yes __No __Ask First __Yes __No __Ask First __Yes __No __Yes __No __Ask First __Ask First Should we disagree on the amount of cleanliness/tidiness each can tolerate, we will resolve our differences in the following manner: GUESTS One of the most common problems between roommates lies in the area of visitation. It is important to discuss who visits and for how long. Think about the times that you would prefer Not to have your roommate’s guest present: (i.e. the night before an exam, in the early morning, etc…) Restricted days and times: When I am not present (or away) I would prefer my roommate’s guests not to use my (Refer to items listed in community & Personal Property) Roommate 1: Roommate 2: Roommate 3: Roommate 4: [mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, making beds, emptying trash, dusting, cleaning the refrigerator, laundering regularly, and any other hygiene issues that may arise] __ We will alternate cleaning the entire space. PET PEEVES Sometimes there will be things that one roommate will do that can really drive the other up the wall. List some and work them out. It really bothers me when...so please don’t: Roommate 1: Roommate 2: Roommate 3: Roommate 4: ROOMMATE AGREEMENT Hopefully this exercise has helped you establish some guidelines that will allow for open communication with your roommate(s). If you encounter problems, you should modify this agreement to better suite your needs by contacting a Residence Hall staff member. We as roommates, enter into this agreement in good faith. We fully intend to abide by all the guidelines set forth above.
