Short Answer Essay Questions
The four short answer essay questions below are intended to assess your academic excellence,
proven leadership abilities and passion for computer science.
Please use one document to capture all four essay questions and upload to the online
application in PDF format. Please note the max file size is 7MB.
Please name your file "FirstName_LastName_essay" i.e. "Harry_Potter_essay".
Please copy and paste all essay questions and write your responses underneath the
question.
Each response to the five questions below should be 300 words or less each.
1) How did you become interested in computer science, and what are your goals or aspirations
when you think about pursuing a degree in this field? In your answer, please describe how your
experiences have influenced the goals you have for yourself.
2) Please describe the most significant computer science project or research you have worked
on, how you approached key technical challenges, and what you gained from the experience. It
might have been a class assignment, a research project or work as an intern. If the project was
team-based, specify your individual role and contributions in the project.
3) Please give us one example of how you have exhibited leadership. Explain how you were
influential, what you were trying to achieve and the impact you had as a result. These need not
be demonstrated through formal or traditional leadership roles. Think broadly and examine the
many ways you are having an effect on the members of your technical community, your
university or your broader community.
4) As a Women Techmakers Scholar, you will have the opportunity to have an impact inspiring
and supporting women in the field of technology. How do you view yourself as being able to
contribute towards supporting women in tech, and what ideas do you have that the community
of Women Techmakers scholars could do to contribute? Keep in mind that impact can happen in
many ways and at different scales.
5) What impact would receiving this scholarship have on your education? Describe any
circumstances affecting your need for a scholarship and what educational goals this
scholarship will enable you to accomplish.

Letters of Reference Overview
For the 2019 WTM Scholars program, one letter of reference is required by the application
deadline, which is December 6, 2018 at 11:59pm PT.
Here are the steps for a student to submit a letter of reference:
Step 1: Applicant decides to invite a reference to submit a letter on their behalf. Applicant fills
out name and job title of reference in WTM Scholars application.
Step 2: Applicant sends an email to reference that includes a link to their personalized access
link, which is available in their application.
Step 3: Applicant checks in on the application overview page to see a counter signaling how
many letters of reference have been submitted. 
Step 4: Applicant submits their application when ready - the letters of reference will be
submitted separately and can happen before or after the main application is submitted.
Here are the steps for a reference to submit a letter:
Step 1: Confirm with the applicant the deadline + application program to submit for.
Step 2: Request the application ‘reference access link’ if it hasn’t been sent already. This
access link is personalized with the applicant’s name and the application program in the body of
the text.
Step 3: Write the letter of reference and please include your contact information in the letter.
This will be used for verification purposes.
Step 4: Using the access link mentioned in Step 2, upload the letter of reference as a PDF.
Verify you are submitting for the correct individual + program prior to submitting by reading the
body of the page - the user’s name + program will be included. Note the maximum file size for
submission is 32 MB.
FAQ for students
Q: Where can I find my personalized access link? 
A: Visit Step 5: Letters of Reference on your application landing page and copy the link. Note
that your access link contains your first name and program application name for verification
purposes.
Q: Can I re-use my access link to invite another reference?
A: Yes, you can re-use your access link to invite multiple references as needed. The link does
not expire and is tied to your specific name and application. One letter of reference is required
for the application but you are welcome to include up to two with your application if you think
this would add additional information about your qualifications.
Q: How can I check that my letter has been received?
A: You can check whether your reference has submitted their letter by logging into your
applicant submission homepage .
Q: Who should I ask to write a letter of reference?
A: Your letter of reference should come from a professor, instructor, adviser, or supervisor.
Q: What constitutes a good letter of reference?
A: A good letter of reference highlights your academics, technical experience, leadership and/or
contributions to your community.
FAQ for references
Q: Are there file/size limits to a letter of reference?
A: Yes. Please submit the letter in PDF format, and note that the max file size is 32 MB.
Q: Will I receive an email confirmation to verify that my letter was successfully received?
A: No, your confirmation will immediately follow your submission. The page will say “Thanks
for submitting your letter of reference! This is your confirmation that your letter of reference
was received.”
Q: How will my letter of reference be used, and who will have access to it?
A: Your submitted letter of reference will be viewed only by a restricted group of Google
reviewers, who will use the letter in conjunction with the rest of an application to assess the
applicant’s holistic qualifications for this program. The applicant does not have access to view
your letter.
Q: What should I do if I submitted the wrong file?
A: Please email WTMScholars@google.com
Q: What should I do if I missed the deadline for submission?

General Questions and Resources
Q: When are the deadlines?
A: Students must submit their application by December 6, 2018 at 11:59 pm PT.
References must submit their letter by December 6, 2018 at 11:59 pm PT.
Q: Can I save my application for later?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I update my application after I submit it?
A: Yes, you can update your application at any time up until the deadline.
Q: I just started a new degree so I don't have a GPA yet. What should I enter?
A: Please enter the GPA of your most recently completed degree/diploma.
Q: Will I receive a confirmation email that my application was submitted?
A: No. You can log into to the application tool at any time to check the status of your application.
If it says "Submitted" in the left column, we have received your application.
Q: I am a high school senior. Can I apply?
A: The Women Techmakers Scholars Program is for current university students, so
unfortunately current high school seniors cannot apply. We encourage you to apply next fall and
als o keep an eye out for Google's pre college programs and scholarships that will be announced
in January 2019 on the Google Student Blog .
