ST.  PAMPHILUS  PARISH

We  are  acquainted  with  victory  celebrations.    We  see  film
clips   of   V-day   parades   at   the   end   of  World  War   II.      In   local   communities
when   the   hometown   team   wins   a   state   championship,   the   community
typically  meets  the  team  on  its  return  home  at  the  edge  of  town  with  police
cars  and  fire  trucks,  forming  a  procession  to  the  high  school  auditorium  to
celebrate   the   accomplishments   of   their   young   heroes.      The   community
celebrates   how   this   new   manifestation   of   goodness   and   power   in   their
young   members   tells   them   something   about   their   communal   life.      The
sense   of   coming   together   and   acting   as   a   unit   gives   us   a   new   sense   of
vitality  and  gratitude  for  the  life  we  share.

When   Jesus   moved   from   the   Mount   of   Olive   across   the
valley  into  the  city  of  Jerusalem,  the  people  gathered  with  palm  branches

mounted   on   a   donkey.      This   act   was   to   fulfill   what   was   written   in   the
prophecy  of  Zechariah:  Humble  and  riding  on  a  donkey,  he  will  bring  order
to  the  land  disarming  it.    Here  an  obedient  people  defeat  their  enemies  by
allowing   the   Lord   to   do   the   fighting   for   them.      When   the   people   cry   out

This   petition   can   set   us   on   the   road   to   laying   down   our   weapons   and
allowing  God  to  be  our  protector.    Our  weapons  are  over  others.    We  can
even   use   the   Scriptures   to   manipulate   others   into   a   particular   way   of
acting  that  we  prefer.
