ThisdocumentdescribestheCIP3pluginversion 1.5,forusewiththeHarlequinMultiRIP.Theplugin
isavailablefortheRIPrunningundertheWindows32‐bitand64‐bit.Theoperatingsystemsupportis
thesameasfortheHarlequinMultiRIP.SeetheHarlequinMultiRIPreleasenotesforthelatest
information.
1 Introduction
PluginsareawayofextendingthecapabilitiesoftheHarlequinMultiRIPinawaythatdoesnot
requireanyprogrammingorothertechnicalskillsfromthepersoninstallingtheplugin.Typical
pluginsallowtheRIPtoacceptjobsfromvarioussourcesofinput,toprocessthedatainvarious
ways,toreportontheprogressofrasterizingtheimage,andtoprovidepageimagesinnewformats,
andtosendthefinalimagetooutputdevicesorinterfacesystems.
TheCIP3pluginallowstheRIPtoproducePrintProductionFormat(PPF)filesasspecifiedbya
groupcalledInternationalCooperationforIntegrationofProcessesinPre‐press,Press,andPost‐press
(CIP4).PPFfilescontaininformationaboutprintjobsincludingadministrativedata,information
aboutinksandregistermarks,comments,andpreviewimages.
ThePPFspecificationisavailableontheinternet,asdescribedinSection5,page15.Briefly,thegroup
wishtoprovideenablingstandardsforapplyingComputerIntegratedManufacturing(CIM)tech‐
niquestoprintingworkflowsbyavoidingtheneedforrecalculationorre‐entryofinformation.The
resultofthisworkisthePrintProductionFormat(PPF)filespecification.
IntheHarlequinMultiRIP,youcanusethesameRIPthatgeneratesyourfilmorplatestocreatePPF
filesenablingink‐keystobesetquicklyandeasilyonpress.PPFfilegenerationisjustaseasyand
automaticasgeneratingtheplatesandfilmsthemselves,andusingthosefileswithyourpresscan
bringyoutocolorfarfaster,reducingmake‐readytimesandwastage,andremovingtheneedfor
platescanners.
1.1 Requirements
TheCIP3pluginhasnospecialrequirements;itsoutputistofileonly,typicallyatalowresolution.

1.2 Capabilities of the plugin
Thepluginhasthefollowingoptions:
• CMYKcolorpreviewimages,8bitsperpixel,separatedorunseparated.Spotcolorsaresup‐
ported,butonlyforseparatedoutputfiles.(Thepreviewimageisthestartingpointforcalculat‐
ingtheink‐keysinthesoftwarethatreadsPPFfiles.)
• Uncompressedorrunlengthencodedcompressedfiles.
•Achoiceofresolutionforthepreviewimage.
•Achoiceofworkstylesforsingleanddouble‐sidedsheets.
Version 1.4r11andlaterofthepluginsupportstheversion 2.0,version 2.1andversion 3.0PPFspecifi‐
cations.
1.3 Typical workflow
BecausethepurposeofthePPFspecificationistoprovidePPFfilesthataccuratelypredictthecharac‐
teristicsofafilmorplate,youcanexpecttohavepairsofpagesetups.Ineachpair,onepagesetup
shouldproducethehighresolutiondatarequiredbyyouractualoutputdeviceandtheoneforCIP3
shouldmimicallsettingsofthatpagesetupexceptthatitshouldhaveCalibrationsetto(None)and
producealowerresolutionversionoftheimageonfilmorplate.
Inuse,youshouldsendajobtwice:oncetothepagesetupfortherealdeviceandoncetothepage
setupusingtheCIP3plugin.(JobssenttotheCIP3pluginrunquicklybecausetheresolutionusedin
aPPFfileistypicallyverylowcomparedtotherealdevice.)
2 Software installation
ThepluginmaybesuppliedaspartofyourstandardHarlequinMultiRIPinstallationmedia.Ifso,
installingtheRIPissufficienttoinstalltheplugin.
Ifyoureceiveseparateinstallationmedia,oranupdatedplugin,installitusingthisprocedure.
1. TheCIP3pluginrequirestheHarlequin MultiRIPtobeinstalledonthetargetmachine.Installthe
RIP,ifthisisanewinstallation.
2. Runthesetupprogramfortheoperatingsystemyouarerunning.ClickNexttomoveontothe
nextscreen.UsePrevioustogobacktothepreviousscreen.
Note: Ensureyouruntheinstallerappropriatefor32‐bitor64‐bitmachines.
3. Inthe“ChooseInstallFolder”windowyoumustspecifytheHarlequinMultiRIPinstallation
folderasthedestinationforthepluginfiles.ClickNext.
IfyouselectaninvalidorincorrectRIPfolderanerrormessagewillappear.Usethebrowserto
selectthecorrectRIPfolderandclickNext.
4. Inthe“ChoosePlugins”windowchooseCIP Plugin X.Xrxpluginalongwithanyotherplugins
youwanttoinstall.ClickNext.
5. Readtheagreementdisplayedinthe“PluginLicenseAgreement”window.YoumustclicktheI
accept...optiontocontinue.ClickNext.
6. Inthe“Pre‐installationSummary”window,checkthatyourselectionsarecorrectandthenclick
Install.
7. Whenthe“InstallComplete”windowappearsclickDone.

2.1 Plugin security
IfyouareusingSentinelLDKsecurityyoumayberequiredtouseanewproductkey.Forinformation
onhowtousetheSentinelLDKseetheSentinelLDKsecuritydocument.
ifyouareusingHLSyoumayberequiredtoenterapasswordbeforeyoucanuseapluginorother
optionssuchascolormanagement.IftheCIP3optiondoesnotappearasanoptionintheDevicelistin
thePageSetupdialogbox,followthisprocedure.
Whenrequestingthepasswordfromyoursupplieryoumaybeaskedtogivetheserialnumberofyour
RIP.TheRIPdisplaysthisnumberinthemainHarlequinMultiRIPwindowwhenstartingup,inthe
form:

Youmustalsotellyoursuppliertheplatformforwhichyourequirethepassword.Theplatformisthe
combinationofoperatingsystemandprocessortype.Forexample,youmightspecifyWindows7,and
Intelprocessor.
1. Onceyouhaveapassword,usetheFile > Configure RIPmenuoptiontodisplaytheConfigureRIP
dialogbox.
2. ClicktheExtrasbuttonintheConfigureRIPdialogboxtodisplaytheExtrasdialogbox.
3. Selecttheplatform‐dependententryforCIP3,andclickAdd.(Forexample,theentryforWin‐
dows32‐bitmachines,andIntelprocessoriscip3.i32, CIP3.)
4. Enterthepasswordforthisoptiongiventoyoubyyoursupplier,andclickOK.
5. ClickOKineachoftheExtrasandConfigureRIPdialogboxes.
Oncethepluginisinstalledfully,youcanchooseitasanentryintheDevicelistinthePageSetupdia‐
logbox.Onceyouhavechosenthedevice,youcanclickConfigure Devicetoseetheconfigurationdia‐
logboxshowninFigure 1.

3.1 Filename setup
ThesettingsinthissectionallowyoutonamethePPFfilessimplyanduniquely.Inallcases,thefile
nameisbasedonthePostScript‐languagejobname,butyouhavecontroloverthelengthofthename,
anoptionalnumericalsequence,andthefileextension.
Directory
Clickthebuttontouseafilebrowsertochoosethedirectorytoholdtheoutputfile.
Alternatively,typeinthetextfieldtoenterthefullpathtothedirectoryyouwanttouse.This
pathmustspecifythedisknameandalldirectoriestoanexistingdirectory.
Ifyoudonotchooseadirectory,theplugincreatesthefilesintheSWfolderoftheRIPinstallation
thatyouareusing.
Use 8.3 Filenames
SelectthischeckboxtouseDOS‐compatibleshortfilenames.Leavethischeckboxunselectedto
uselongfilenames,uponwhichyoucanmakesomerestrictionsbyselectingtheremainingcon‐
trolsinthissection.
Limit jobname to …characters
Selectthischeckboxtobasethenameofthefilecreatedonaninitialsubstringofthejobnameset
inthePostScript‐languagefilewhichdescribesthepage.Usethetextfieldtospecifythemaxi‐
mumnumberofcharactersyouwanttotakefromthejobname,startingfromthebeginningofthe
name.
Leavethischeckboxunselectedtouseallthealphabeticandnumericcharactersinthejobname.
Append … digits
Enteranumberheretoappendaknownlengthofnumericalstringtothejobnameinorderto
createauniquenameforeachfileproduced.Thenumberisanintegerstartingat0(zero).For
example,enter3inthisfieldtogeneratenumbersoftheform:000,001,002,andsoon.
Extension
Enteratextstringtoactasanextensiontothefilename.Thedefaultis PPF,butyoucanchoose
anotherextensionifitisrequiredbyyourworkflow.
3.2 DIG comments
IfDigitalImpositionGeometry(DIG)commentsarepresentinincomingjobs,thecontrolsinthissec‐
tionallowyoutousesomeofthenamesincludedinthesecommentsaspartsofCIP3commentsspec‐
ifiedintheContentssectionofthisdialogbox.
DIGcommentsfollowaspecificationcreatedandmaintainedbyScenicSoft,Inc.Thecommentsare
includedinPostScript‐languagefilesproducedbyPrepsfromScenicSoftandImpoStripfrom
UltimateTechnographicsInc.Thecommentsprovideenhancedsupportforlargeformatimagesetters
usingmorethanoneimaginghead.
ItissafetoselectthesecheckboxesforjobsthatdonotcontaintherelevantDIGcomments.

3.3 Extents and Transforms
Thereareseveralverysimilarsubsectionsunderthisheading,oneeachforFilm,Plate,Press,andPaper.
Youcansetallofthesevaluesorleavesomeatthedefaultvalues.
Extentsrefertothephysicalareaoftheimage.Transformsaretheoffsets,rotation,andmirroringthatit
ispossibletoapply.DependingonthechoicethatyoumakeforWork Style,alsointhissectionofthe
dialogbox,theremaybeabacktothesheetsrequiringdifferentbutrelatedtransforms.
Thetransformsarecumulativeandexecutedinthetoptobottomorderusedinthisdialogbox.The
transformsdefinedforFilmareappliedinmovingfromtherasterdatatothefilmimage,thetrans‐
formsforPlateareappliedinmovingfromthefilmimagetotheplate,andsoon.
Asufficientlylargeoffsetorinappropriaterotationcancauselossofimagedata,asFigure 2shows.In
eachofthecases,theboldoutlinerepresentsthetotalareaofthefilm,andthelightoutlinerepresents
theimagearea.Theshaded(gray)areasshowwherepartsoftheimagearenotimagedbecauseofa
transform.

Note:TheextentsandtransformsdonotaffecttherasterthatyoucanviewinRoam.Theyarea
recordofhowthefollowingstagesoftheprintingworkflowshouldhandletherasterandthephysical
imagesinordertoachieveacorrectproductafterprinting,cutting,andfolding.
TheCIP3PPFspecificationdefinesallgeometrywithrespecttoanoriginatbottomleftoftherelevant
coordinatesystem.However,thespecificationdoesnotclearlydefinewhatisthe“bottomleft”ofa
plate,whatistheimageableareaofapress,andsoon.Youmayencountersomeconventionsthatare
specifictothewayinwhichvariousvendorshaveinterpretedthespecification.

Thereareseveralwaystoachieveadouble‐sidedsheet,involvingvariousimpositionstylesthatmay
requireoneortwoplates.TheWork StylecontrolallowsyoutosetuptheCIP3plugintosuitthese
styles.
Whetherornotthesameplateisusedonboththefrontandbackofasheet,thefronttobackregistra‐
tionmustbemaintainedandthereisfrequentlyaneedtoaltertheorientationoroffsetsforuseonthe
back.Figure 3showsthedimensionsthatcanbeaffectedbysuchchanges.Forexample,left/right
inversionmeansthatthehorizontaloffsetofthebackiscalculatedfromthevaluesonthefrontas

ToproducecompositecolorPostScript‐languagejobscorrectly,you(orthecustomerssupplyingyou
withjobs)mustuseaPPDthatsupportscolor.Youcancheckthatyouaregettingcompositecolorjobs
bycheckingthepagebuffersintheOutputController,usingtheRoambutton.
Similarly,youcansupplyjobsasanyotherformofinputacceptabletotheRIP.NotethatPostScript‐
languageandPDFjobscanbepreseparatedratherthancomposite.Preseparatedjobswillproduce
onePPFfileforeachseparation,unlessyouselecttheRecombine preseparated jobsoptionintheEdit
Styledialogbox.
