Ballast water treatment: Lively
discussions trigger new impulses
The thorough testing of new ballast water
treatment technology is of signifi cant im-
portance. This is one of the main points Dr
Jan P. Boon, project leader at NIOZ Royal
Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
and chairman of the International Ballast
Water Conference, currently being held
at Europort, specifi es after the rst day
of the two-day conference “Ballast water
management: From concept to reality”.
Summarising the results from the “Meet
the Experts” panels, in which the par-
ticipants could choose between eight
different sessions, he said, “Learning
should have a priority over ning,”
In eight workshops more than 120 participants discussed various issues concerning the treatment of ballast water

addressing the fact that BWM
systems are a complete new
technology. While testing fa-
cilities do their best, he noted,
it is not possible to test all
the systems for the entire fleet
before the convention enters
into force.
Background
To prevent non-native spe-
cies from invading other
ecosystems, in 2004 the IMO
adopted the International
Convention for the Control
and Management of Ships’
Ballast Water and Sediments
(BWM Convention). It re-
quires ships to conduct a bal-
last water exchange or meet a
concentration-based ballast
water discharge standard in
accordance with a gradually
implemented schedule linked
to the ship’s build date and
amount of ballast on board.
Since vessels have not been
designed and equipped to
treat ballast water, installation
of a BWM system is necessary
to ensure conformity with the
strict water quality standards
set in what is known as Regu-
lation D2.
However, the BWM Conven-
tion has yet to reach the re-
quired number of signatories
for formal ratification. Entry
into force will occur twelve
months after ratification by
30 states representing 35%
of world merchant shipping
gross tonnage.
The represented tonnage cur-
rently stands at 30.32%
International Ballast
Water Conference at
Europort 2013
In hosting the International
Ballast Water Conference on
Wednesday and Thursday, Eu-
roport is prioritising one of the
current key issues of the inter-
national maritime agenda.
The conference focuses on
specific challenges in the
implementation of BWM
policies.
After a session of lectures that
gave an overview of the cur-
rent status of BWM-related is-
sues, the programme offered
special “Meet the Expert” ses-
sions, focusing on the role
of ports, exemptions, special
ships, transparency, approval
and installation processes,
retrofitting, compliance, mon-
itoring and enforcement, and
US regulations. This gave the
delegates the opportunity to
address and discuss specific
subjects in more detail.
The conference is organised
by the North Sea Ballast Wa-
ter Opportunity (NSBWO), a
platform of international ex-
perts including scientists, pol-
iticians, manufacturers, ship-
owners and NGOs, funded by
the European Union.
More than 120 registered par-
ticipants attended the confer-
ence on Wednesday.
In his welcome address in
the morning, Jan Boon from
NIOZ, introduced the NSBWO
project and explained the risk
of marine bioinvasion caused
by global shipping to the audi-
ence. Starting off, Marieke Ver-
weij from ProSea Foundation
presented an environmental
perspective. According to her,
the global economic losses
due to non-native species in-
vading sensitive eco-systems,
sum up to EUR 7 billion every
year.
Annuka Pekkarinen from the
World Maritime University,
Malmö, Sweden, afterwards
focused on the topic: “Ballast
Water Management and Inva-
sive Species: Training, research
and awareness building”.
Subsequently, Stefan Kacan
from Germany’s Federal Mari-
time and Hydrographic Agen-
cy (BSH) gave an overview of
the current status of the con-
vention, the cooperation with
other authorities regarding
the approval process and pre-
sented results from the NSB-
WO project. As a main goal of
the project, which is still run-
ning until the middle of 2014,
he specified the establishment
of a manual for the approval
of ballast water management
systems.
He was followed by Louis
Peperzak from NIOZ and
Stephan Gollasch from Go-
Consult. They discussed vari-
ous options for the detection
of the bacteria identified in
the IMO D-2 standard in their
presentation A technical and
enforcement perspective on the
IMO ballast water convention”
Workshop
In the workshop “My Con-
cerns and Issues”, which was
scheduled after the lunch
break, participants could
choose a specific subject each
in two consecutive “Meet the
Expert” panels. Today there
will be two more panels, so in
total participants may discuss
four topics in more detail.

Meet us at Europort,
standnumber 1315
SAM Electronics Nederland
of Rotterdam, a subsidiary of
Hamburg-based SAM Electron-
ics, an L-3 company, is exhibit-
ing its extensive range of latest
automation, navigation, com-
munications and associated
equipment at the show.
Main features include an
updated NACOS Platinum
bridge control assembly with
a network system architecture
that now supports dynamic
positioning, making it the
world’s first fully integrated
bridge system able to pro-
vide inclusive automation,
navigation, communications
and DP functions, SAM said.
Its increased functionality
and extended screen displays
are simulated in various op-
erational modes supported
by a stand-alone multi-pilot
console for combined IP ra-
dar and ECDIS operation.
Another navaid on display is
a compact ECDIS pilot basic
unit, specifically designed for
retrofit applications, which is
said to be compatible with all
main chart databases while
providing overlays of ARPA
and AIS targets.
Other exhibits include SAM
Electronics Nederland’s re-
cently expanded series of KVH
SAT-TV and VSAT terminals
for a wide range of onboard
Internet, email and leisure ap-
plications.

Iskes Towage & Salvage has
signed an agreement with
VSTEP for the delivery of two
NAUTIS tug and offshore
supply vessel (OSV) simula-
tors. The simulators are the
first units purchased for the
new Iskes / Damen training
centre, set up in the new of-
fice building of Iskes in Am-
sterdam.
VSTEP will initially provide
a 360-degree NAUTIS full
mission tug simulator and a
240-degree NAUTIS desktop
trainer. At a later stage, the
tug and OSV simulators will
be expanded with another
360-degree full mission tug
simulator so that a complete
exercise scenario with the
assisted vessel and two tugs
(one at the stern and one at
the bow) can be conducted.
The centre will initially be
used for internal training,
with courses offered for ex-
ternal parties starting in the
second quarter of 2014.
Jim Iskes, owner of Iskes
Towage & Salvage said, “For a
number of reasons we wanted
a tug simulator. First to train
new crew; we are confident
that the simulator will de-
crease the time needed to
train new masters and chief
officers. But also and very
important the simulator will
provide us with a tool to train
emergency situations and to
sail under difficult circum-
stances such as heavy winds
and dense fog.”
Arie Jonas, project manager
for training at Damen Services
added,
“The simulator will in-
itially feature the specifics of
a Damen 2810 and a Damen
3212 ASD tug, but also the
popular Damen fast crew sup-
plier 2610 will be simulated.”

Belgium’s Fujifilm Smart Sur-
faces will unveil a new sili-
cone fouling release solution,
which will save fuel and re-
duce dry-docking. The prima-
ry goals of the fouling release
system, the company said,
are to prevent fouling from
permanently attaching to sur-
faces, which increases drag
and causes higher fuel usage
and costs, and to reduce dry-
docking and maintenance, as
well as reduce the generation
of greenhouse gases.
The company’s non-toxic solu-
tion is a patented, resilient, ef-
fective silicone-based coating.
The Smart Surfaces Duplex fou-
lant-release technology causes
organisms to be released from
surfaces even at lower speeds
and lighter water pressure, Fuji-
film Smart Surfaces noted
The Duplex Tie Coat formula
incorporating nanotechno-
logy is an ingenious synergy
of three layers. An epoxy anti-
corrosion layer and a tough,
protective silicone surface
coat are effectively interlocked
through a covalent bond. The
synergy among these three
creates a superior adhesion
and durability that boosts
the toughness and adhesion
properties of the epoxy and
silicone coating, creating a
new system that is durable
and long lasting, Fujifilm
Smart Surfaces said.

Fouling release solution to save fuel
At the Alfa Laval stand at Euro-
port 2013, visitors will find a
comprehensive approach to
deal with financial and regula-
tory pressures in the maritime
industry, with solutions for
energy efficiency and extend-
ing performance at the fore-
front.
The products on display in-
clude energy solutions like
PureDry, which offers the
win-win scenario of minimis-
ing fuel waste volumes while
returning usable fuel. Addi-
tionally, energy advantages are
prominent in systems beyond
the fuel line. Examples include
waste heat recovery systems,
whose energy-reclaiming ca-
pabilities are as relevant for
auxiliary engines as they are
for main engines, and the new
ballast water treatment system
PureBallast 3.0, which pro-
vides energy savings of up to
60% compared with previous
versions.
Supporting these solutions are
Alfa Laval’s vast expertise and
global backing, which ensure
that immediate energy savings
pave the way for long-term
operating economy. Alfa Laval
Service offering will be another
strong focus at Europort, al-
lowing visitors to explore the
benefits of extending perform-
ance: maximum uptime, avail-
ability and optimisation.
Green Route participant
An independent jury from the
Platform Clean Shipping ini-
tiative has identified that Alfa
Laval will merit the “Green
Route” status during Euro-
port 2013. Being a participant
of the “Green Route” means
that Alfa Laval is offering de-
monstrable commitment to a
sustainable maritime indus-
try. Recognition entitles ex-
hibitors to acknowledgement
on the organiser’s floor plan,
highlighting their standing as
“green innovators”.

MARS Shipyards & Offshore,
a new group comprising the
Polish maritime companies
Energomontaz Polnoc (EPG)
and Nauta from Gdynia as
well as MSR Gryfia, two re-
cently merged shipyards from
Swinoujscie and Szczecin, will
showcase its entire portfolio at
Europort.
The core activity of EPG is the
manufacturing of complicated
steel structures for the offshore
sector, power generating sta-
tions (including nuclear and
renewable power), as well as
for chemical and petrochemi-
cal plants. EPG Shipyards, part
of EPG, focuses on the repair
and conversion of vessels.
Nauta is one of the leading Polish
shipyards that specialises in
building hulls and vessel, repairs
and conversions of civilian crafts
as well as repairs and rebuilding
of military crafts. It also produces
steel offshore structures.
MSR Gryfia focuses on ship re-
pair and offshore construction.

SMST, a designer and builder
of customised lifting, trans-
port, drilling and pipelay sys-
tems for the handling of heavy
equipment on board ships, will
present new access bridges, var-
ying in application and length,
as well as fast offshore crafts
that are used for patrol, inspec-
tion and crew transport.
At its stand at Europort, SMST
presents its range of telescopic
access bridges (TAB), including
the smallest solution (S-ver-
sion) with a maximum length
of 10m. The version is designed
to be combined with the
13.5m-long fast offshore craft.
By mounting the access bridge
onto the vessel, personnel can
be transferred safely and cost-
effectively to an offshore struc-
ture or the quay side. Stability
of the craft is accomplished by
the motion-compensated sys-
tem of the bridge.
The SMST M, L and XL versions
of the TAB are designed for both
walk-to-work application and
cargo handling. The balanced
construction enables easy ac-
cess to wind farms and accom-
modation platforms with the
use of low power and minimal
space requirements. The access
bridges vary in lengths, up to a
maximum of 58m.

Konutherm will present its
range of thermal oil and glycol/
water heat transfer systems for
the marine, oil and gas and pet-
rochemical industries.
Its thermal oil and glycol/water
systems are especially suitable
to keep tanks with heavy fuel
(HFO) and/or cargo (crude oil
or chemicals) at the required
temperature, Konutherm said.
The systems are equipped with
highly efficient fired heaters
and designed for optimum
heat recovery with special ex-
haust gas heaters (economis-
ers), provided with a robust
valve system. The heavy-duty
economiser valve system com-
bines optimum control of the
required temperature and pre-
vents degradation of the heat
transfer oil, the company said.
The major advantages of the
Konutherm exhaust gas econo-
misers are said to be the high
energy recovery, the low fouling
and oil degradation rate and
that no dump cooling (with
corresponding heat exchanger,
pumps, piping, appendages
and energy consumption) is
required. Furthermore, they
combine an efficient fuel-sav-
ing operation with a minimum
of service requirements and
downtime.

Eteha bv - Slangtechniek will
present its entire Flygt pro-
gramme, offering its custom-
ers a complete package of
pump solutions. Flygt Ready
pumps handle flows up to
6.5 l/s, heads to 14m and
solids to 38mm in diameter.
Available with power ratings
from 0.4 to 0.9 kW, these
portable drainage pumps
are lightweight and engi-
neered for professional use
at construction or industrial
sites and in manholes or
emergency situations, the
Dutch company said.
The smallest of the Flygt
electric submersible dewater-
ing pumps, the Ready series
has been designed to easi-
ly withstand tough jobsite
use, removing contaminated
water and water containing
sand and gravel.
Built with a compact motor
and lightweight materials,

Recovery in shipbuilding
industry is now visible
A recovery in the shipbuilding
industry is now arriving follow-
ing two tough years, the Ger-
man government’s minister re-
sponsible for shipbuilding said
at the start of the SMM.
“The upturn has now arrived
in an initial form in some
shipyards,” said Hans-Joachim
Otto, State Secretary in Ger-
many’s federal Economics
Ministry and the German gov-
ernment’s coordinator for the
maritime industry. An increase
in world trade was expected
by the German government in
2011 which would in turn help
yards to recover, Otto told the
SMM opening press confer-
ence. “The recovery will come
in stages,” he said. “Firstly liner
shipping services followed by
ship owners involved in char-
tering will feel the benefi t.

using the patented control sys
-
tem Sycratronic (simultaneous
lifts) combined with the Dy
-
namic Anti Collision Control
System (DACS) which ensures
the highest possible perform
-
ance and protection for the
cranes. DACS prevents colli
sion between the crane booms
and or fixed obstacles. When a
number of cranes are operat
ing simultaneously, the action
of each crane can be controlled
based on information of the
current position of the neigh
bouring cranes. The unique
feature of DACS is that the sys
tem automatically calculates
actual position, speed and the
acceleration of each crane as
well as the load moment limi
tation. This provides the crane
driver with maximum flex
ibility backed with full safety.
Conventional anti-collision
systems define a virtual border
in order to prevent the cranes
from colliding. However, this
results in a restriction of the
working radius of each crane.
With DACS the working radii
are not restricted.

HafenCity
An impressive example of
Hamburg’s dynamism is the
HafenCity. This is currently
Europe’s largest inner city
development project which
will create a new milestone
in the city’s history. An en-

space of 157 hectares is be-

fascinating mix of historic
buildings and modern archi-

of each crane can be controlled

The yard can also undertake a wide range
