There is an excellent tradition of both academics and extra curricular activities at Mauldin High School. The extra
curricular program is an integral part of the total educational experience. The intent of the program is to enrich a
student’s life while preparing him/her for future endeavors.
While it is an honor for a student to be a part of the extra curricular program, it is also a privilege. The extra
curricular program will not be allowed to detract from Mauldin High School’s primary mission - to provide every
student the opportunity, challenge, and support to realize his or her educational potential and the ability to assume
a productive role in a democratic society. Extra curricular activities are complementary and supplementary to
the academic program of Mauldin High School. Academic success is considered the principal goal for all
students.
Students who participate in extra curricular activities are required to fully comply with all policies outlined in this
manual. Once a student is a member of the team/group, he/she is considered a member year round and must
adhere to the policies set forth in this handbook and to team rules established by the coach. Ultimate authority
over extra curricular activities lies with the principal and he/she may amend any policy set forth.
Tradition
Tradition builds pride, fosters team unity and reinforces confidence.

The Official Seal of Mauldin High School is enclosed by ribbons in the school colors of orange and white. The
motto AGE QUOD ADIS means finish what you attempt. The original founding date is 1927 - the new founding
date is 1973. A Maverick head is the school mascot. The shield is divided into four parts: the American flag
symbolizes Freedom; the open book symbolizes knowledge and wisdom (SAPERE AUDE - dare to be wise); the
magnolia symbolizes abundance and natural beauty; and the white clouds in a blue sky symbolize a serene
community, free of pollution and congestion, while the spire with cross symbolizes character.
Alma Mater
In the golden heart of gentle foothills
Stands Mauldin High School lighting our way
to life and learning. . .
Our Alma Mater leads each day!
Mauldin, Oh Mauldin High,
We lift our praises unto you.
Ours to build, to honor, love
Ours to pledge with faith anew.
In the golden days of Mauldin High School
May love and peace bind heart to heart
And reap a spirit . . .
Ours to hold as we depart.
Mauldin, Oh Mauldin High,
We lift our praises unto you.
Ours to build, to honor, love
Ours to pledge with faith anew.

NJURY
All injuries of any nature must be reported to the coach and athletic trainer at the time that they occur so
that further injury can be avoided. A certified athletic trainer, provided by the Greenville Hospital System,
supervises all athletic injuries that occur at Mauldin High School. This includes:
1. Working directly with coaches in planning conditioning programs to prevent injury.
2. Coordinating coverage of games and practices
3. Administering emergency care and first aid when injuries occur.
4. Evaluating injuries and making appropriate medical referrals.
5. Providing daily treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning to the injured athlete.
6. Maintaining records pertaining to all injuries.
7. Communicating with the athlete’s parents, coaches and physicians regarding injury status and progress.
In order for a student athlete to be allowed to return to practice/competition from an injury he/she must have a
written release from his/her treating physician. If the physician has communicated to the athletic trainer, the
athletic trainer must notify the coach. If the athletic trainer is treating the injury, he/she must notify the coach.
P
ARENTS
COMMUNICATION
Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult endeavors. By establishing an understanding of each position,
we are better able to accept the actions of others and provide greater benefit to the student. As parents when your
child becomes involved in an extra curricular program, you have the right to understand what expectations are
placed on your child. This begins with clear communication.
In order to assure the best communication possible, the following steps must be taken:
1. Call the school to set up an appointment with the coach. Requests to speak to a coach during class time
will not be granted. However, parents are encouraged to leave a message for the coaches. Every effort
will be made by the coach to contact the parent in a timely manner.
2. If the concern is not satisfactorily resolved after speaking to the coach, contact the athletic director in an
attempt to resolve the situation.
3. Please do not attempt to contact a coach before or after a contest or practice. Often this is an emotional
time for both parents and coaches. Meetings of this nature usually do not promote positive resolution.
SPORTSMANSHIP
In order to ensure that the educational experience your son/daughter has while participating in extra curricular
activities at Mauldin High School is positive, it is important to follow the guidelines below:
1. Practice good sportsmanship.
2. Respect the officials and their authority during games/competitions.
3. Do not question or confront the coach at the athletic venue. Use the procedure outlined in the previous
section.
4. Remember the game is for the athletes to have fun. These programs are for our students, not the adults.
5. Reinforce with your child that competing as hard as one can is more important than winning or losing.
6. Demand that your child treat opposing players, officials, coaches, spectators with respect and dignity.
6
7. Promote the physical and emotional well being of all students.
8. Do not encourage any behaviors, which could endanger the health and well being of the students.
9. Playing time is not open for discussion.
10. Please understand that it is a privilege, not a right, for your child to be a participant in extra
curricular activities. Therefore, it is a privilege for you to be a spectator. Failure to abide by the
aforementioned guidelines may be cause for your removal from that event and future events.
T
RAVEL
All athletes will travel both ways on the school-provided transportation to a contest, unless written notification by
the parent or legal guardian is given to the coach. Approval by the coach must be given before the student will be
allowed to leave the contest. Should an emergency occur and a student misses the school’s transportation
to an away contest, their parent or guardian may transport him. Upon arrival, the parent or guardian must
discuss the emergency with the coach before participation will be allowed.
While on trips to other schools or a competition, all students are under the rules and codes set forth by Mauldin
High School and Greenville County Schools.
A
WARDS
VARSITY LETTERS
Only one letter is given during a student’s years of eligibility. Further accomplishments are designated by
awarding service bars and/or a pin to designate another activity. The requirements for earning a varsity letter differ
for each activity. The criteria is set up by the coach. Letters signify an accomplishment at the varsity level. They
are earned, not merely “given.”
TEAM AWARDS
All team awards are decided upon and presented by the coaches in that particular activity at the end of the
season banquet.
JERSEY RETIREMENT
The retirement of a jersey is a distinguished honor only bestowed to those students who excel in their particular
activity. When a jersey is retired, only the jersey is retired, not the number. The number will continue to be used.
For a person to have a jersey retired, the following criteria must be met:
1. Nomination made in the form of a letter with a complete list of accomplishments and submitted to the
athletic director.
2. Be a graduate of Mauldin High School
3. Earn All-State honors at least 2 years (All-State, All Star, Player of the Year)
4. Must retain an unblemished record of citizenship after they leave Mauldin High School
Mauldin High School reserves the right to retract any retired jersey.
