The temperature was hot but the
Hangtown Harmonica competition
was even hotter at the Cowboys
and Cornbread event held at
Rainbow Orchards on Saturday July
21st. Seven contestants were vying
for cash prizes in the top three
spots, but only one could go away
with the title 2012 Hangtown
Harmonica Champion. Leading off
this year’s competition and scoring
big points with his showmanship,
Randy Head has joined an esteemed
list of Hangtown Harmonica con-
testants. Next up, Roger Coleman
who says his inspiration came from
a man called “Animal” while he
was working at a carnival at the
age of 17. Roger says that “he
touched my soul and I hope I can
repay the debt.” A relative novice
with a little more than 5 years of
harmonica music under his belt,
George Yurkovic claims the mouth
harp is good for his soul as well.
That said, he shared his soul food
with hundreds of music lovers brav-
ing the heat. The youngest and
only female contestant in this year’s
competition was Julianne Barb at
age 13 who gave the talented
group a run for their money. New
to this years competition but no
stranger to the mouth harp was
Mac Rice from the popular local
band Late for Dinner. Orvin
Lambert, back for the third year in
row hoping to keep his winning
streak going. Having previously
won 3rd and 2nd place respectively
he pulled out all the stops with his
smooth as silk technique. Reigning
Champion Eric Hill impressed the
audience and the judges by chang-
ing harmonicas mid-song.
After the scores were tallied
there was a tie for 1st place
between the 2011 Hangtown
Harmonica Champ Eric Hill and Mac
Rice with his bluesy sound. The
temperature got hotter and the
competition got tougher with
another round of music between
the two. When the dust had set-
tled Mac Rice claimed the top spot
of 2012 Hangtown Harmonica
Champion, Eric Hill took second and
Orvin Lambert only 3 points behind
the top two landed 3rd place.
Thank you to our judges, Richard
Esposito, Dan May, and Supervisor
Ray Nutting, who had a very tough
job that afternoon.
Cowboy Up At Rainbow Orchards
Congratulations to “Tim’s Terror” the winning Chili entry from Sierra Vista Bank.
Shown here, Marty and Kathleen Mendenhall, helpers for the Hindquarter House in
Pilot Hill. Cowboy Poet, Hatch Graham, looks the part.
