User Instructions3354876 : Edition A : August 2005 : Subject to Modification (A4-D-P) PSS® MERLIN® TELEMETRYREPEATER UNITThis User Instruction describes the operation of the PSS® Merlin® Repeater Units when used in conjunctionwith PSS® Merlin® Data Radio Unit and the PSS® Merlin® Telemetry System.  It is important that theinstruction be read in conjunction with the User Instructions for the following products:1. Sentinel2. PSS® Merlin® Telemetry System and,3. Associated self contained respiratory protection apparatus (SCBA).For Your SafetyuRefer to and take note of the ‘For Your Safety’ statements in the Instructions for Use supplied with theselected SCBA.uUse the equipment only for the purpose as specified in this Instruction for Use.uOnly trained competent personnel should carry out the requirements of this instruction.uUse the equipment and any approved ancillary units only in the combination as outlined in thisinstruction.uThere is a duty and responsibility on employers to ensure that a safe system of work is in place forentry into and working within a hazardous environment.  The owner or the operator of the equipment,described in this Instruction for Use, must ensure the safety of personnel by providing the correct andappropriate personal protection equipment to personnel allocated to use and position the equipmentwhen entering and working in an environment identified as being hazardous.uThe PSS® Merlin® Repeater Units meet the FCC requirements regarding exposure of humanbeings to radio frequency radiation. Occupational/Controlled limits apply when persons are exposedto radio frequency radiation as a consequence of their employment provided these persons arefully aware of and exercise control over their exposure. Awareness of exposure can be accomplishedby use of warning labels or by specific training or education through appropriate means, such asan RF safety program in a work environment.Liability StatementResponsibility for reliable function of this equipment and any approved ancillary units, transfers to theowner or the operator when the equipment is serviced or repaired by untrained personnel, (not employedor authorised by Dräger) or when used in a manner not conforming to its intended use.Description and Intended UseScenarios may occur at an incident where thePSS® Merlin® entry control board (ECB)experiences a loss of radio contact with one ormore of the ‘Logged On’ radio modules (PU’s)associated with the wearer’s of the SCBA.When strategically positioned at an incident thePSS® Merlin® Telemetry Repeater Units willextend and enhance the effective transmissioncoverage between the ECB and the ‘Logged On’PU(s).  The repeater is able to receive datatransmissions from any ECB or PU(s) within rangeand then re-transmit the data to any ECB or PU(s)within range.The Repeater System can consists of up to tworepeater units identified as Repeater No. 1 andRepeater No. 2.The sequence for the 'In Use' positioning of therepeaters is as follows:1. Repeater No. 1 must be in range of the ECB.2. Repeater No. 2 must be in range of RepeaterNo. 1 (Chain Configuration) or in range of theECB (Star Configuration).Note: For an explanation of Chain and Starconfigurations refer to the chapter onPropagation in the Instruction for Use forPSS® Merlin® Telemetry.Contained inside a weatherproof carry case withdetachable carrying strap, each repeaterincorporates an integral digital radio transmitter/receiver powered from a single rechargeablebattery.  Also included are associated antenna andaccessories. Refer to the Order List –Accessories for details of charging units andaccessories.Safety Note: The charging units are not approvedto the same intrinsic safety standard as is appliedto the repeater.  Do Not attempt to charge thebattery  underground or  in an  area designatedas, or subject to explosion hazard.  Charge thebattery in a safe area.Refer to the label attached to the Universal PowerSupply (AC) to check that the electrical mainsupply voltage corresponds to the specified voltagerequirement as indicated on the label.Important Note:  The temperature of the batteryis measured by a thermistor inside the batterycell.  To protect the battery, the charging processwill stop if the temperature of the battery is below41°F (5°C) or exceeds +104°F (+40°C).Fitting the BatteryNote: Before fitting the charged battery, checkthat the O ring seal of the locating boss is inposition and not damaged and that the dovetailguide of the battery and the radio module areclean and not damaged.Refer to Figure 1.uPartially open the lid of the carrying case,enough to access the lid of the radio module/battery compartment.  Lift and fold back flatthe lid to access the radio module.uLocate the battery to the dovetail guide of theradio module then slide the battery along theguide until a positive audible ‘click’ is heard.Correct retention is indicated when the ‘Red’indicators are visible in the two release keyholes in the base of the radio module.  Tofurther ensure positive retention, grip thebattery and attempt to remove - there must beno movement.Refer to Figure 2.uPress the toggle switch (1) Fig. 2 to the ‘On’position - the ‘Red’ LED. (2) should begin‘flashing’  confirming a satisfactory chargecondition of the battery.  Switch ‘Off’.uFold back the lid of the radio module/batterycompartment to close then close the main lidof the carrying case.  Ensure the Velcrofastening is secure.uThe repeater is now ready for operational use.Note: With the toggle switch (1) Fig. 2 in the‘Off’ position no power is used from the battery.In UseSafety  Warning:  Refer  to  'For  Your  Safety'regarding the duty and responsibility on employers.Important  Note:  Before  operational  use  of  therepeater(s) ensure that a fully charged battery isfitted.  Switch On the repeater - an intermittentshort flash Off  of the Red LED signals a lowcharge  condition  of  the  battery    recharge  thebattery.  Fit a fully charged battery.Operation - Single RepeaterThe following procedure applies to the use of eitherRepeater No. 1 or Repeater No. 2 when used asindividual units (Star Configuration) in range of andcommunicating with the operative ECB and withthe associated ‘Logged On’ PU(s).uOpen the lid of the carrying case and removethe antenna and antenna support tube from itsholder in the lid.  Open the inner pouch to accessthe antenna cable.  Connect the BNC plug ofthe antenna cable to the BNC jack from thecontrol box – Fig. 3.Refer to Figures 4 and 5.uInsert the end of the antenna support tube(Fig. 4) into the location hole in the case.  Insertthe antenna (1) Fig. 5 into the support tube.uFold the excess cable neatly and place in thepouch then close the lid of the carrying case.Note: If it is required to site the antenna somedistance from the repeater then an optionalantenna with a 30 metre cable length may befitted instead. When in position,press the toggle switch (1) Fig. 2 to the ‘On’position and wait for the ‘Green’ LED (3) tobegin flashing as this will confirm a successfulradio link with the ECB.  See Important Note.The flashing ‘Red’ LED confirms a satisfactorycharge condition of the battery.Important Note: The ECB emits a signal at leastevery  20  seconds.   Following switching  on ofthe  repeater,  the  Green  LED  may  notimmediately illuminate.  Wait at least 25 secondsto establish whether a successful radio link hasbeen made with the ECB.Should  the  Green  LED    not  illuminate  afterthis time then switch the repeater 'Off' - proceedto an alternative location -  repeat the procedureuntil the Green LED begins to flash confirminga successful radio link with the ECB.Refer to the Instructions for Use supplied with thePSS® Merlin® Telemetry System Entry ControlBoard for complete operational instructions andprocedures.Operation - Two RepeatersThe following procedure applies to the use ofRepeater No. 1 and Repeater No. 2 whenpositioned in line (Chain Configuration) i.e.Repeater No. 1 in range and communicating withthe operative ECB, and Repeater No. 2 in rangeand communicating with Repeater No. 1 and withassociated ‘Logged On’ PU(s).uRepeater No. 1 – prepare and position foroperational use  as described in the previoussection, i.e.  Operation - Single Repeater.  The‘Green’ LED (3) Fig. 2 flashing.uRepeater No. 2 – select a location for positioningof the repeater and prepare for operational useas described in the previous section, i.e.Operation - Single Repeater.  Refer to theImportant Note regarding timing of the signalfrom the ECB.Refer to the Instructions for Use supplied with thePSS® Merlin® Telemetry System Entry ControlBoard for complete operational instructions andprocedures.After UseSafety Warning:  Refer to  For  Your  Safetyregarding duty and responsibility on employers.uRetrieve the repeater(s) from the selectedlocation(s) and switch ‘Off’ by pressing thetoggle switch (1) Fig. 2 to the ‘Off’ position.The ‘Red’ and the ‘Green’ LED will extinguish.uPack the antenna, the antenna support andcable etc. and close the lid of the carrying case.Note: Do Not drop or throw down therepeater(s) as damage could occur.uPass the repeater(s) to the ServiceDepartment.Care and MaintenanceOther than the after use requirement for a generalvisual inspection of the unit, and associatedaccessories, for damage, contamination etc., andensuring that the battery is ‘charged’ before futureoperational use, the repeater does not require anyroutine attention by the user.CleaningWhen considered necessary by the user, removedirt and contaminants by carefully cleaning thecarrying case etc. using a clean lint free clothdampened in a mild soap solution, then thoroughlydry.  Apply a proprietary antistatic cleaning agentto a clean lint free cloth and clean the surfaces ofthe unit.  Do Not immerse the repeater unit incleaning fluid.Safety Note: Do Not use organic solvents, suchas  Acetone,  Alcohol,  White  Spirit,Trichloroethylene  or  similar  or  any  abrasivecleaning agents.Removing the BatteryImportant Note: An intermittent short flash Offof the Red LED indicates a low charge conditionof  the  battery  -  recharge.    Fit  a  fully  chargedbattery.Tools RequiredRelease Key        3351827uPartially open the lid of the carrying caseenough to access the lid of the radio module/battery compartment.  Lift and fold back flatthe lid of the radio module/batterycompartment to access the radio module.uTo remove the battery - insert the pins of therelease key into the two holes in the base ofthe radio module.
