This uniquely designed product has a built-in two CD changer with a 20 track programmable memory and repeat playback. It also features a great sounding digital tuning AM/FM stereo radio with 20 preset station memories. We are sure that this unit will provide you with many years of exceptional performance with a minimum of care and maintenance. Please review the contents of this instruction manual completely and carefully before operating your unit, to make sure that you understand all functions and operations and get the maximum benefit out of all the great features included in this product. The serial number of your unit can be found on a label on the bottom of the cabinet. We suggest that you record the serial number in the space provided below in case this information is ever needed at a future date. Model Number: ES17 Serial Number _______________________________________ 2 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 3 PREPARATION FOR USE UNPACKING AND SET-UP • • • • • • • Remove the main unit, speakers, remote control, and AC power cord from the carton and remove all packing materials from the components. Important: The AC power cord is not attached to the main unit during shipment. Make sure the power cord is not accidentally discarded with the packing materials. We recommend that you save the carton and packing materials, if possible, in the event that your unit ever needs to be returned for service. Using the original carton and packing material is the only safe way to prevent your unit from being damaged in transit. Remove any descriptive labels or stickers that may be attached to the top or front panel of the main unit. Do not remove any labels or stickers from the bottom or back panels. Remove any small strips of tape that may have been used to prevent the CD door from opening in transit. Unwind the AC power cord and extend it to its full length. Unwind the FM Lead Wire Antenna (on the back panel) and extend it to its full length. There are “Dummy CD” display cards in both CD players. These “Dummy CDs” must be removed and discarded before loading your own CDs in the player. Refer to the instructions for “Playing Compact Discs” on page 10. PROTECT YOUR FURNITURE: This model is equipped with non-skid rubber 'feet' to prevent the product from moving when you operate the controls. These 'feet' are made from non-migrating rubber material specially formulated to avoid leaving any marks or stains on your furniture. However certain types of oil based furniture polishes, wood preservatives, or cleaning sprays may cause the rubber 'feet' to soften, and leave marks or a rubber residue on the furniture. To prevent any damage to your furniture we strongly recommend that you purchase small selfadhesive felt pads, available at hardware stores and home improvement centers everywhere, and apply these pads to the bottom of the rubber 'feet' before you place the product on fine wooden furniture. SPEAKER CONNECTION 1. Place the speakers in convenient locations on either side of the unit. Usually a distance of four to six feet between speakers provides the best stereo effect, but this may vary depending on the size and acoustics of the room. 2. Locate the Speaker Terminals on the rear of the unit and connect the solid red wires to the red (+) terminals and connect the black wires to the black (–) terminals. 3. To connect the speaker cables to the terminals, slide the Red tabs upward and the Black tabs downward to open the terminals. Insert the bare wire of the cable into the terminals, then slide the Red and Black tabs back to their original positions to lock the wire in the terminal. Be sure to match the cable color to the terminal color. If the cables are connected incorrectly the sound will be “muddy” and “distorted”. 4. Pull lightly on the connection to make sure it is secure. CAUTION: Only connect the speakers which are supplied with the unit. The use of any other or additional speakers may cause damage to the unit. Never operate the unit without the speakers connected. REMOTE SENSOR To operate the unit with the remote control, point the remote at the remote sensor on the front of the main unit and press the appropriate button. The remote control has an effective operating range of approximately 15 feet at an angle of no more than 15° to the left or right of dead center. NOTE: Bright sunlight may interfere with the operation of the remote control. 3 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 4 PREPARATION FOR USE (CONTINUED) INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL BATTERIES The battery compartment is located on the rear of the remote control. + — • Remove the battery compartment door by pressing down and sliding the door in the direction of the arrow. • Insert two (2) AA size batteries into the battery compartment as shown to the right. Use a well known brand of alkaline batteries for longest life and best performance. —+ Be sure to observe the polarity markings which are engraved inside the battery compartment. If the batteries are inserted incorrectly, the remote control will not operate. • Replace the battery compartment door. • Do not mix different types of batteries together (e.g. Alkaline and Carbon Zinc) or old batteries with fresh ones. • When the operation of the remote control becomes intermittent, replace the batteries. A fresh set of alkaline batteries should operate the remote for up to one year of normal use. POWER SOURCE NOTE: this system is designed to operate on 120V 60 Hz AC house current only. Connecting this system to any other power supply could result in damage to the unit which is not covered by your warranty. AC Outlet AC Plug Unwind the AC cord and extend it to its full length. Insert the small end of the AC cord into the AC socket on the rear of the unit. Insert the other end of the AC cord into any convenient 120V 60Hz household outlet. Please note that this unit is equipped with a polarized AC plug which has one blade wider than the other. This is a safety feature to reduce the likelihood of electric shock. This polarized AC plug will only fit in a polarized AC outlet. If you find that you cannot insert this plug into your outlet, you may have an obsolete non-polarized outlet. Please do not try to defeat this safety feature by using a non-polarized adapter or by filing the wider blade to make it fit into your outlet. If this plug does not fit into your outlet, you should contact a qualified licensed electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Note: The smaller end of the AC cord, and the AC socket, have one “square” side and one “rounded” side. The plug will fit into the socket only one way. If the plug does not fit into the socket, do not force it. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to set the unit to the 24 hour (24H) mode (also known as military time), or 12 hour (12H) mode. 4 5 3 2 HEADPHONE JACK 1 1 Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to set the current hour, then press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❸ again; the minute digits will blink. If you selected 12H time display be sure to observe the AM or PM indicators to make sure you have set the hour correctly. PRESET EQ Press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button and the hours will blink. 3 2 1 Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to set the current minute. Press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❸ and the time will be set. To listen to the unit through headphones, simply insert the headphones (not included) into the Headphones jack. The speakers will be disconnected when the headphones are plugged in. DISPLAY BUTTON (REMOTE CONTROL ONLY) 1 1 Press the PRESET EQ button to cycle through the preset EQ settings, or to turn the EQ off. Each press of the PRESET EQ button will cycle as follows: CLASSIC (harp), ROCK (guitar) POP (dancing), Off. Standby (Power Off) Mode In Standby (Power Off) mode the display shows the correct time. Press the DISPLAY button once to show the TIMER ON time. After 5 seconds the display returns to the correct time. Tuner Mode In Tuner mode the display shows a radio frequency. Press the DISPLAY button once to show the correct time, or twice to show the TIMER ON time. After 5 seconds the display returns to the correct time. CD Mode In CD mode the display shows the CD track number and elapsed time. Press the DISPLAY button once to see the Remaining Time on the disc, twice to see the correct time, and a third time to see the TIMER ON time. After 5 seconds the display returns to the correct time. 7 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 8 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) LISTENING TO THE RADIO 1 2 3 Press the POWER/STANDBY button to turn the unit on; the Standby indicator will go out and the main display will light. Press the TUNER Function button; “TUNER” appears in the display. 4 5 Press the STOP/BAND (■) button to select AM or FM. NOTES: • If you select the FM band, be sure to extend the FM Lead Wire Antenna for best reception. • When listening to the radio you may also switch between AM and FM bands by pressing the DISC SELECT button. 6 1 2 1 MANUAL TUNING: Repeatedly press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to manually advance the frequency in the display up or down until the desired frequency appears. 1 2 AUTOMATIC TUNING: Press and hold the TUNING/SKIP/ Search ❶ or ❷ button until the frequency in the display starts to scan, and then release the button; the tuner will search and then stop on the next strong station it finds. Repeat this procedure until the desired frequency appears in the display. 2 2 Adjust the PRESET EQ button ❶ and VOLUME buttons ❷ as desired. NOTE: If the FM STEREO band is selected and you have tuned to an FM Stereo station, the FM Stereo indicator will light in the display. Hints for Better Reception FM - Make sure that the FM Lead Wire Antenna is extended to its full length. You may have to vary the direction of the FM lead Wire Antenna to find the strongest signal for each FM station. AM - The AM ferrite bar antenna is located inside the unit. It may be necessary to turn the unit slightly so that the internal antenna is pointing in the direction of the AM transmitter. You may have to experiment to find the position that provides the strongest reception for each of your favorite AM stations. MUTE 1 To temporarily mute the sound, press the MUTE button on the remote control; “MUTE” will appear in the display and the sound will be muted. Press the MUTE button again to restore the sound and “MUTE” will disappear from the display. 8 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 9 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) SETTING RADIO PRESETS This unit can preset 10 AM and 10 FM radio stations for convenient recall. 1 2 3 1 2 1 2 Press the POWER/STANDBY button to turn the unit on; the Standby indicator will go out and the main display will light. Press the TUNER Function button ❶ ; “TUNER” appears in the display. Press the STOP/BAND (■) button ❷ to select AM or FM. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to select a station. 4 5 6 2 3 1 Press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❶; “MEMORY” will blink in the display. Within 6 seconds, press the REPEAT/PRESET UP button ❷ to select a preset memory number. Press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button again to set the station in the selected memory. 5 Repeat steps 3 through 5 to program up to 10 stations in each band, if desired. In case the main power supply is interrupted, the memory presets will be erased. ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 10 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) PLAYING COMPACT DISCS NORMAL PLAYBACK 1 2 2 1 Press the POWER/STANDBY button ❶ to turn the unit on; the Standby indicator will go out and the main display will light. Press the CD Function button ❷; “CD” appears in the display. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the CD door. Remove the two “Dummy CD” display cards from the CD players and dispose of them. IMPORTANT: These cards must be removed before loading your own CDs. Insert one or two CDs in the player with the printed label sides facing up. Gently press downward near the center hole of each disk to make sure that it is properly ‘seated’ on the spindle. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button again to close the CD door. Track “00” and Time “00:00” will flash momentarily as the player reads the disc or discs and then playback will begin automatically. The display will show the track number and the elapsed time of the track being played. 3 2 1 If you load one or two discs in the player it will play one or both discs and then stop. This is the Default Play Mode. Both Disc icons will appear in the display and the icon of the playing disc will flash. 1 CD 2 You can also select other Play Modes by pressing the DISC SELECT button as follows: 1st Press: Disc 1 will play one time. The disc 1 icon flashes and the disc 2 icon disappears. 1 2nd Press: Disc 2 will play one time. The disc 2 icon flashes and the disc 1 icon disappears. CD CD 2 3rd Press: Disc 1 and Disc 2 will play continuously. Both icons appear with the arrow symbol, and the icon of the playing disc will flash. 1 CD 2 4th Press: Return to default Play Mode. Both discs play one time and then playback stops. 1 CD 2 Note: The CD player always returns to the default play mode if the power is switched ‘Off’ or if you switch from CD mode to Tuner mode. 4 5 1 2 2 Adjust the PRESET EQ button ❶ and VOLUME buttons ❷ as desired. Playback will continue until all the tracks on the disc have been played. To stop playback before the disc ends, press the STOP/BAND (■) button. The disc will stop and the display will show the total number of tracks and playing time on the disc. 10 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 11 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) CD PAUSE CONTROL 1 2 During CD playback, if you wish to pause the disc momentarily, press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button again. Playback stops but the disc continues to spin and the time display will blink. Press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button again to release pause and resume normal CD playback. TO BEGIN PLAYBACK FROM A SPECIFIC TRACK 1 2 2 1 1 While in the Stop mode, you may press either the TUNING/SKIP /Search ❶ or ❷ button to select a specific track for playback. 2 You can also use the Direct Track Selection buttons ❶ on the remote to directly select a track. If the track is over 10, press the OVER button ❷, then the appropriate Direct Track Selection button ❶. FORWARD/REVERSE SKIP TRACK AND HIGH-SPEED MUSIC SEARCH ( 1 During playback, press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ( ) button once to advance the player to the beginning of the next track. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ( ) button repeatedly to advance the player to higher numbered tracks. 2 / ) 3 During playback, press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ( ) button once to move the player back to the beginning of the current track. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ( ) button repeatedly to move the player back to lower numbered tracks. 11 During playback, depress and hold either the TUNING/SKIP/ Search ( ) or ( ) button to move the player forward or backward within a track to locate a specific musical passage. The player will move forward or backward at high speed as long as the button is depressed. When you release the TUNING/SKIP/ Search ( ) or ( ) button, normal playback will resume. Press the TUNING/SKIP/ Search ❷ or ❸ button to select the specific track that you wish to repeat. When the desired track number appears in the display, press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button ❹ to begin playback. The specific track you selected will be repeated continuously. 2 1 To repeat all of the tracks on a disc continuously, press the REPEAT/PRESET UP button ❶ twice; “REPEAT” will light solid in the display. Press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button ❷ to begin all tracks repeating. To cancel Repeat Playback, press the REPEAT/PRESET UP button until “REPEAT” disappears from the display. PROGRAMMED PLAYBACK The CD player in this unit has a 20 track programmable memory that allows you to program up to 20 tracks on any disc for playback in any desired order. You may program 20 different tracks or you may also program certain tracks to play more than once. To perform programmed playback, follow the steps below. Notes: • You cannot program a disc while it is playing. If the disc is playing press the STOP/BAND (■) button first to stop playback before you perform the programming procedure. • You can only program tracks from a single disc. You cannot program tracks from two different discs in the same program sequence. 1 2 3 2 Press the CD Function button. 1 Press the OPEN/CLOSE button ❶ and insert a CD with the label side facing up. Press the STOP/BAND (■) button ❷ to stop the auto-play feature. Press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button; “P-01” (program number), “01” (track number) will appear and “MEMORY” will blink in the display. When the desired track number appears in the display, press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❸ again. Press either the TUNING/SKIP/ Search ❶ or ❷ button to select the next track you wish to program. When the desired track number appears in the display, press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❸ again. 7 After programming up to 20 tracks in the CD Program Memory, press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button ❶ to begin programmed playback. “MEMORY” will appear in the display and playback will begin on the first track that you programmed. The player will continue to play all of the tracks that you programmed in the order in which you programmed them. When the last programmed track has been played, the player will stop and the display will again show the total number of tracks on the disc. If you press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❷ and then press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button ❶ again, playback will start on the first track you programmed and will continue until all the programmed tracks have been played. To cancel the Programmed Playback mode, press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❷ to enter the program mode, and then press the STOP/BAND (■) button ❸ . 3 2 1 Repeat step 5 until you have programmed up to 20 track numbers into the CD Program Memory. PROGRAMMED REPEAT 1 2 3 It is also possible to use the Program and Repeat functions together to repeat a specific program indefinitely. First, enter the Repeat mode and then program the tracks you wish to hear in the order you wish to hear them, as described above. Both the MEMORY and REPEAT will appear in the display. Press the PLAY/PAUSE ( ) button to begin programmed repeat playback. The player will play the tracks you selected in the order in which you programmed them. When the last track in the program has been played, the entire program will begin again. Programmed Repeat operation will continue indefinitely until you press the STOP/BAND (■ ) button. 13 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 14 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) SETTING THE TIMER Set the timer to turn the unit on to the Tuner or CD mode at a preset time as follows : NOTE: Please make sure the volume is set to the desired level to wake you up. 1 2 3 4 1 3 3 2 With the power off, press and hold the SLEEP/TIMER button ❶ (TIMER on the remote) until “TIMER” blinks in the display. Press and hold the MEMORY/ CLOCK ADJ button ❷ until the 12H/24H blinks in the display. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❸ or ❹ button to select between 12H/24H then press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❷ again; the hour digits will blink. 2 1 Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to set the hour, then press the MEMORY/ CLOCK ADJ button ❸ again; the minute digits will blink. Press the TUNING/SKIP/Search ❶ or ❷ button to set the minutes, then press the MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ button ❸ again. Within a few seconds, “TIMER” will light in the display to indicate that the timer is set. When the actual time matches the time set for the Timer, the unit will turn on to the last function (CD or tuner) used. It will play for one hour (in the Tuner mode) or to the end of the disc (in the CD mode) and then shut off and reset itself for the following day. TO TURN THE TIMER OFF SO IT IS NOT SET FOR THE NEXT DAY, press and hold the SLEEP/TIMER button again until “TIMER” disappears from the display. ACTIVATING THE SLEEP FUNCTION Set the sleep timer as follows: 1 2 3 Press the POWER/STANDBY button to turn the unit on and tune the desired radio station or insert a CD as previously instructed. Press the SLEEP/TIMER button and “90” will appear and “SLEEP” will blink in the display. Press the SLEEP/TIMER button a second time to set the unit to turn off after 80 minutes. Each additional press with decrease the sleep time by 10 minutes. After the sleep time is set, you can press the SLEEP/TIMER button at any time to stop the Sleep function; “SLEEP” will disappear from the display. 14 ES17.O/M.QXD 5/12/03 2:51 PM Page 15 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Caring for Compact Discs • Treat the compact disc carefully. Handle the compact disc only by its edges. Never allow your fingers to come in contact with the shiny, unprinted side of the compact disc. • Do not attach adhesive tape, stickers, etc. to the compact disc label. • Clean the compact disc periodically with a soft, lint-free, dry cloth. Never use detergents or abrasive cleaners to clean the compact disc. If necessary, use a CD cleaning kit. • If a compact disc skips or gets stuck on a section of the compact disc, it is probably dirty or damaged (scratched). • When cleaning the compact disc, wipe in straight lines from the center of the compact disc to the outer edge of the compact disc. Never wipe in circular motions. B ENZEN E C LE A N E R • This unit is designed to play only compact discs bearing the identification logo as shown here. Other compact discs may not conform to the CD standard and may not play properly. • Compact discs should be stored in their cases after each use to avoid damage. • Do not expose compact discs to direct sunlight, high humidity, high temperatures, or dust, etc. Prolonged exposure or extreme temperatures can warp the compact disc. • Do not stick or write anything on either side of the compact disc. Sharp writing instruments, or the ink may damage the surface. CARE OF THE CABINET If the cabinet becomes dusty wipe it with a soft dry dust cloth. Do not use any wax, polish sprays, or abrasive cleaners on the cabinet.
