Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. 3 ES25_072904.p65 3 30/7/2004, 11:34 PREPARATION FOR USE UNPACKING AND SET UP • This system consists of the following components: Tuner/CD Player unit, Amplifier/Subwoofer unit, 2 “Thinovation™ ” Flat Panel Speakers, and Remote Control. Carefully remove all the components from the display carton and verify that you have all the necessary components before you dispose of the display carton. • Remove all packing materials from the individual components. Remove any descriptive labels that may be attached to the front panel of the main unit. Do not remove any labels or stickers on the back panels of the main unit or the speakers. • Remove any small strips of tape that may have been used to prevent the CD door from opening in transit. • Place all the components in the desired location. This system is designed to be used on level, stable, flat surface such as a table, desk, shelf, or stand, convenient to an AC outlet, out of direct sunlight, and away from sources of excess heat, dust, moisture, or vibration. • Unwind the AC power cord on the back of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit and extend the cord to its full length. • Unwind the lead wire FM antenna on the back of the Tuner/CD Player unit and extend it to its full length. • The main unit is shipped with a “dummy CD” display card in the CD player. This “dummy CD” card must be removed before you can use the CD player. Refer to the “PLAYING COMPACT DISCS” instructions on Page 22. 4 ES25_072904.p65 4 30/7/2004, 11:34 POWER SOURCE This system is designed to operate on 120V AC 60Hz house current only. Connecting this system to any other power source may cause damage to the system and such damage is not covered by your warranty. NOTE: The system has polarized AC plug with one wide blade and one narrow blade. The plug will only fit into matching polarized AC outlets. This is a safety feature to reduce the possibility of electric shock. If the plug will not fit in your AC outlets, you probably have outdated nonpolarized outlet. You should have your outdated outlet changed by a qualified, licensed electrician. Do not file the wide blade on the plug, or use an adapter to make the plug fit into your outlet. This AC Outlet defeats the safety feature and could AC Plug expose you to electric shock. MAIN POWER SWITCH IMPORTANT: The MAIN power SWITCH is located on the back of the Amplifier/ Subwoofer unit. This switch must be ‘ON’for the system to operate. The main power switch should be left in the ‘ON” position at all times. The only time you should set this switch back to the ‘OFF’ position is if you will not be using the system for an extended period of time – for example, two weeks or longer. The remote controller cannot operate the system if main power switch is in the ‘OFF’ position. ON MAIN SWITCH OFF R L 5 ES25_072904.p65 5 30/7/2004, 11:34 BATTERY BACK UP This system includes a battery back up circuit that will maintain the Tuner preset station memories and the correct time in the event of a power interruption. The battery back up circuit requires a 9V battery, not included. 1.) The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the Tuner/CD Player unit. Turn the Tuner/CD Player unit upside down. NOTE: Place the unit on a soft surface such as a towel to avoid scratching the finish on the top of the cabinet. 2.) Push the door locking tab in the direction of the arrow to open the battery door. 3.) Attach the 9 volt battery to the terminals of the battery harness as shown. It can only be attached one way. Bottom View Of Tuner/CD Unit 4.) Replace the battery door. 6 ES25_072904.p65 6 30/7/2004, 11:34 SYSTEM CONNECTION Place the Tuner/CD Player unit on top of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. Note that there is a multi-pin ribbon cable permanently attached to the back of the Tuner/CD Player unit. The multi-pin plug at the end of this ribbon cable must be connected to the multi-pin socket on the back of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. SPEAKER CONNECTIONS Connect the two “Thinovation™ ” Flat Panel speakers to the color-coded white “L” and red “R” speaker jacks on the back of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. Make sure that the speaker plugs are fully inserted into the speaker jacks. If the plugs are loose the connection may be intermittent. 7 ES25_072904.p65 7 30/7/2004, 11:34 AUXILIARY SOURCE CONNECTIONS You can listen to the sound from external audio sources through the speakers of this system. Connect the Aux/Line/Audio Output Jacks of the external audio source to the AUX IN Jack at the front panel of Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. Note: Connection cables are not included. From External Audio Sources AUDIO OUT L R RCA Jacks LINE OUT OR Stereo Phones Jack AUX IN Examples of External Audio Sources that can be connected to this system are: Cassette Player, Mini Disc Player, the sound from your TV, VCR, DVD player, etc. Instructions for listening to external audio sources will be found later in this manual. PROTECT YOUR FURNITURE This model is equipped with non-skid rubber 'feet' to prevent the product from moving when you operate the controls. These 'feet' are made from non-migrating rubber material specially formulated to avoid leaving any marks or stains on your furniture. However certain types of oil based furniture polishes, wood preservatives, or cleaning sprays may cause the rubber 'feet' to soften, and leave marks or a rubber residue on the furniture. To prevent any damage to your furniture we strongly recommend that you purchase small self-adhesive felt pads, available at hardware stores and home improvement centers everywhere, and apply these pads to the bottom of the rubber 'feet' before you place the product on fine wooden furniture. 8 ES25_072904.p65 8 30/7/2004, 11:34 REMOTE CONTROL BATTERY The remote control requires one “button-type” 3-volt lithium battery, included. To extend the life of the original battery we have inserted a small clear plastic spacer tab between the lithium battery and the battery terminal. You must remove this battery spacer tab before you can use the remote control. Remove before use To remove the tab, pull it in the direction of the arrow in the Remueva antes de usar illustration as shown. When the operation of the remote control becomes intermittent or unsatisfactory, replace the original battery with a new 3-volt lithium battery. 1.) Press the locking lid of the battery holder to the left and slide out the battery holder. 2.) Place one 3V CR2032 battery in the battery holder, observing the positive (+) direction. If the battery is placed incorrectly the remote control will not work. 2 1 3 4 3.) Insert the battery holder into the battery slot. Notes: Use a well-known brand of cell battery for longest life and best performance. (Back Cabinet) 12 ES25_072904.p65 12 30/7/2004, 11:34 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS • Make sure the Tuner/CD Player unit is connected to the Amplifier/ Subwoofer unit with the built in ribbon cable. • Make sure that you have removed the battery spacer from the remote control handset. • Make sure that the 2 “Thinovation™ ” Flat Panel speakers are connected to the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. • Make sure that the MAIN Power SWITCH on the back of the Amplifier/ Subwoofer unit is ‘ON’. • Make sure that you have installed the back up battery in the Tuner/ CD Player battery compartment. • Make sure the AC power cord from the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit is properly connected to a 120V 60Hz household AC power outlet. USING THE CONTROLS Most of the functions of this system can be operated by pressing the buttons on the front panel, or the corresponding buttons on the remote control handset. If a particular function can only be operated by controls on the main unit or controls on the remote, the instructions will specify: “Main Unit Only” or “Remote Control Only” 13 ES25_072904.p65 13 30/7/2004, 11:34 SETTING THE CLOCK When the system is connected to the AC outlet for the first time and “AM 12:00”appears on the display. This is your indication that the time display is incorrect and needs to be reset. 1.) Press the STANDBY/ON button on the front panel or remote control to turn the system ‘On’. The Tuner display comes on, the display will show “FM 87.5 MHz”. 2.) Press the AUX button on the front panel to select the Aux function. The time display will show current time and the colon will be flashing. 3.) Press the button on the front panel or CLOCK SET button remote control for at least 3 seconds. “12H” will begin flashing in the display indicating that the clock is set for 12-hour “American” time. Note: You may press either the / button on the front panel of the main unit or > / < buttons on the remote control once to change the clock format to 24 Hour for “European” time as desired. The display will change from “12H” to “24H”. 4.) Press the CLOCK SET or button again. The Hour digits will begin flashing. 14 ES25_072904.p65 14 30/7/2004, 11:34 5.) Press either the / Buttons on the front panel or > / < buttons on the remote control to set the display to the correct Hour, AM or PM. 6.) Press the CLOCK SET or button again. The Minute digits will begin flashing. 7.) Press either the / Buttons on the front panel or > / < buttons on the remote control to set the display to the correct Minute. 8.) Press the CLOCK SET or button once more. The time display stops flashing and the clock begins to run. 9.) Press the STANDBY/ON button on the front panel or remote control to turn the system ‘Off’. The main display goes off. Note: The correct time will appear on the display when the system is in the Standby (Power Off) Mode, or when the AUX function is selected. 15 ES25_072904.p65 15 30/7/2004, 11:34 MAIN VOLUME AND VARIABLE BASS VOLUME CONTROLS Volume Adjustments Press the DIGITAL VOLUME + or – buttons on the front panel or the remote control to increase or decrease the volume. The volume level indicator appears on the main display. The range is from “00” (Minimum) to “30” (Maximum). This system will remember the last volume level you selected before switching the power ‘Off’and will automatically return to that volume level when the power is switched ‘On’again. Note: If the MAIN Power SWITCH on the back panel is switched 'OFF', or if the AC power is interrupted, the volume level will return to the “15” default level when the power is restored. VARIABLE BASS CONTROL Turn this control to + or – on the front panel of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit or press the BASS + / – buttons on the remote control to increase or decrease the amount of bass response from the subwoofer speaker. Notes: We set this control to the Maximum setting at the factory. The range is from “00” (Minimum) to “20” (Maximum). MUTE Button (Remote Control Only) To temporarily shut off the sound from the speakers press the MUTE button on the remote control. The MUTE indicator will appear in the display and the sound will stop. Press the MUTE button again to cancel Mute and restore the sound. The MUTE indicator will disappear from the display. 16 ES25_072904.p65 16 30/7/2004, 11:34 LISTENING TO THE RADIO 1.) Press the STANDBY/ON button on the main unit or the remote control. The main display turns on. 2.) If necessary, press the button on the front panel of the main unit or the CD/TUNER button on the remote control to select the Tuner function. The display will show an AM or FM station frequency. To select a different band, press the STOP/BAND button. 3.) Tune to the desired frequency as follows: • Manual Tuning Repeatedly press either the Tune / Buttons on the front panel or > / < buttons on the remote control until the frequency of the desired station appears on the display. • Automatic Tuning Press and hold the Tune / Buttons on the front panel or > / < buttons on the remote control until the display begins to move, then release the buttons. The tuner will search up or down the band for the next strong station and stop on that station. Repeat this procedure until the tuner stops on your desired station. 4.) Adjust the VOLUME controls as desired. You may also adjust the VARIABLE BASS CONTROL level on the front panel of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit or BASS + /– buttons on the remote control unit. 17 ES25_072904.p65 17 30/7/2004, 11:34 5.) If you tuned to an FM Stereo station the STEREO indicator will appear in the main display. If the reception is noisy or weak, press the button on the front panel of the Tuner/CD Player unit to the mono setting. The STEREO indicator will disappear. The reception will normally improve although the sound will no longer be in stereo. 6.) When you are finished listening, press the STANDBY/ON button on the main unit or remote control to return to the Standby (Power Off) mode. The main display goes off and the time display reappears. 18 ES25_072904.p65 18 30/7/2004, 11:34 ANTENNA INFORMATION FM Make sure the FM lead wire antenna is unwound and extended to its full length. It may be necessary to vary the direction of this wire antenna until you find the position that provides the best reception for your favorite FM stations. R L ~ AM The AM ferrite bar antenna is inside the main unit. If AM reception is unsatisfactory, you may have to turn the main unit slightly until you find the position that provides the best reception. 19 ES25_072904.p65 19 30/7/2004, 11:34 PRE-SETTING STATIONS IN THE TUNER MEMORY This system includes a 20 station preset memory. You can store up to 10 FM stations and 10 AM stations in the tuner memory for immediate recall by using the remote control unit only. The procedure for storing stations in memory is as follows: 1.) Follow step 3 under “LISTENING TO THE RADIO” to select the first station you wish to memorize. Example: FM 103.5 MHz. 2.) When the desired station appears on the display press the PROGRAM button on front panel or on the remote control. The PROGRAM indicator flashes and Preset Memory Number “M 00” appears in the display. 3.) Press the REPEAT/PRESET button on remote control once to select your preset memory number 01 and then press PROGRAM button to enter memory. 4.) Tune to the next station you wish to memorize. When the desired station appears on the display press the PROGRAM button to start the PROGRAM indicator flashing, and then press the REPEAT/PRESET button to select a different preset memory number. (Each time you press the REPEAT/PRESET button the preset memory number display advances by 1.) 20 ES25_072904.p65 20 30/7/2004, 11:34 5.) Press the PROGRAM button again to enter the station in the selected preset memory number. 6.) Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have memorized up to 10 stations on the FM STOP/BAND button to switch to the AM band and band, then press the follow the same procedure to enter up to 10 stations on the AM band. RECALLING PRESET STATIONS Turn the system ‘On’and select the desired band. Press the REPEAT/PRESET button on the remote control unit only repeatedly to scroll through the preset memories until the display shows the desired station. There is no REPEAT/PRESET button on the main unit. CHANGING PRESET STATIONS To change any preset station memory, select the desired band and tune to the new station you wish to memorize. Press the PROGRAM button on the remote control unit and then press the REPEAT/ PRESET button to display the memory number you wish to change. Press the PROGRAM button again to enter the new station in the memory. The new station is memorized and the previous station is deleted from the memory. 21 ES25_072904.p65 21 30/7/2004, 11:34 PLAYING COMPACT DISCS IMPORTANT: This CD player can play normal CDs plus CD Recordable (CD-R) and CD Rewriteable (CD-RW) discs. However the playability of CD-R/RW discs may be affected by the type of software that was used in ‘ripping’ the tracks from the original discs and ‘burning’the tracks onto the blank media. Playability may also be affected by the quality and condition of the blank media you use for recording. 100% compatibility cannot be guaranteed. This is not an indication of any problems with your player. Note: You must remove the ‘dummy CD’ display card from the CD player before loading your own CDs. 1.) Press the STANDBY/ON button to turn the system ‘On’. 2.) Press the CD button on the front panel of the main unit or the CD/TUNER button on the remote control to select the CD function. 3.) Press on the front edge of the CD door in the area marked “PUSH” to open the CD Door. Remove the ‘dummy CD’from the player and discard it. 4.) Place a CD on the center spindle with the printed label side facing up. Press down near the center hole of the CD to make sure it is properly seated on the spindle. 22 ES25_072904.p65 22 30/7/2004, 11:34 5.) Close the CD door. The disc will spin and “00” will flash in the track number. Within a few seconds the disc will stop spinning and the display will show the total playing time and total tracks on the disc. Note: If the disc is inserted upside down or if the disc is badly scratched and unreadable, playback will not be possible. In this case the main display will show “no dISC”. Remove the disc and re insert it properly, or try another disc. 6.) Press the PLAY/PAUSE button on the front panel of the main unit or on the remote control to begin playback on track 1. The display will show the elapsed playing time of each track as it plays. 7.) Adjust the VOLUME +/– buttons and VARIABLE BASS CONTROL level as desired. 8.) When the last track has played the player stops automatically and the display again shows the total playing time and tracks on the disc. You may also stop playback at any time by pressing the STOP/BAND button on the front panel of the main unit or on the remote control. 9.) When you are finished listening, press on the front edge of the CD door to open it. Remove your disc and close the CD door. 10.)Press the STANDBY/ON button to return the system to the Standby (Power Off) mode. 23 ES25_072904.p65 23 30/7/2004, 11:34 PAUSE CONTROL To pause momentarily during CD playback press the PLAY/PAUSE button on the front panel of the main unit or the remote control again. The sound stops and the elapsed time display flashes but the disc continues to spin. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button once more to cancel Pause mode and resume playback. The elapsed time display stops flashing. SKIP/SEARCH CONTROLS ( / ) To skip to higher or lower numbered tracks during playback, repeatedly press the / buttons on the front panel of the main unit or > / < buttons on the remote control until the desired track number appears in the display. Playback will begin on the desired track. To perform high speed search within a track to locate a specific musical passage depress and hold the / buttons on the front panel or > / < buttons on the remote control. The player will move rapidly forward or backward as long as the buttons are depressed. When you hear the desired passage release the buttons and normal playback will resume at that point. TO START PLAYBACK ON A SPECIFIC TRACK Load the disc as usual and wait until the total playing time and track numbers appear on the display. The Repeat function can be activated by using the remote control while a disc is playing or while the disc is stopped. There is no REPEAT/PRESET button on the man unit. One Track Repeat Press the / buttons on the front panel of the main unit or > / < buttons on the remote control until the desired track number appears in the display, then press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback on that track. Press the REPEAT/PRESET button on the remote control once. The REPEAT indicator flashes in the display. The selected track will be repeated continuously. All Tracks Repeat Load the disc as usual and wait until the total playing time and track numbers appear on the display, then press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. Press the REPEAT/PRESET button on the remote control twice. The REPEAT ALL indicator remains ‘On’. The entire disc will be repeated continuously. To cancel Repeat Playback continue pressing the REPEAT/PRESET button until the REPEAT indicator disappears. Load the disc as usual and wait until the display shows the total playing time and number of tracks. Press the RANDOM button on the remote control. There is no RANDOM button on the main unit. The RANDOM indicator appears in the display. The tracks will be played in random order continuously. To cancel the Random mode press the RANDOM button on the remote control once more until the RANDOM indicator disappears. Random mode can also be canceled by pressing the STOP/BAND button, opening the CD Door, or switching to the Tuner function. 26 ES25_072904.p65 26 30/7/2004, 11:34 PROGRAMMED PLAYBACK This system has a 20 track programmable memory. You can program up to 20 tracks on a disc to playback in any desired order. Note: You cannot program the player while a disc is playing. You must press the STOP/BAND button first to stop playback before beginning the programming steps below. 1.) Load your disc as usual and wait until the display shows the total playing time and number of tracks. 2.) Press the PROGRAM button on the front panel or the remote control. The track number ”00” flashes. The PROGRAM indicator and program memory number “P–01” appears in the display. 3.) Press the / buttons on the front panel of the main unit or > / < buttons on the remote control to select the first track you wish to program. Example: Track 07. 4.) Press the PROGRAM button again to enter Track 07 in Program Memory 01. The Program number advances to “P–02” and the track display returns to flashing “00”. 5.) Repeat Steps 3 and 4, selecting a different track number each time until you have entered up to 20 tracks in the memory. 27 ES25_072904.p65 27 30/7/2004, 11:34 After you have programmed up to 20 tracks, press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin programmed playback. The PROGRAM indicator remains in the display and the tracks you selected will be played in the desired order. After the last programmed track has played the player stops, the PROGRAM indicator disappears, and the display again shows the total tracks and playing time on the disc. However the program sequence remains in the memory. • To repeat the program sequence press the PROGRAM button and the press the PLAY/PAUSE button. • Programmed playback can be canceled by opening the CD Door, or by switching to the TUNER or AUX function; turning the power ‘Off’. PROGRAMMED REPEAT PLAYBACK You may also use both the Program and Repeat functions together to continuously repeat the programmed tracks. 1.) Program up to 20 tracks as described above. 2.) Press the PLAY/PAUSE Programmed Playback. button to begin 3.) Press the REPEAT/PRESET button in the remote control twice to select ‘All Tracks Repeat’. The REPEAT ALL indicator remains ‘On’. The programmed tracks will be repeated continuously. 28 ES25_072904.p65 28 30/7/2004, 11:34 TIMER FUNCTION This system includes a programmable Timer function that will turn the system ‘On’, play for one hour, and then shut the system ‘Off’automatically. You can use the timer to wake you up to the TUNER or to your favorite CD. The timer can be programmed while the system is in the Standby (Power Off) mode, the TUNER mode, CD or AUX mode. To Set The Turn-On Time 1.) Press and hold the button on front panel or SLEEP/TIMER ON button on the remote control for at least 3 seconds until the TIMER ON indicator begins flashing in the display. While ON indicator is flashing, press the button on the front panel or CLOCK SET button on the remote control. The Hour digits begin to flash. 2.) Press the / buttons on the front panel of the main unit or > / < buttons on the remote control to set the display to the desired turn-on hour, AM or PM. or CLOCK SET button. The 3.) Press the Minute digits begin flashing. 4.) Press the or CLOCK SET button once more to enter the turn-on time in the memory. The TIMER ON indicator stops flashing and remains ‘On’. The display returns to the correct time, the TUNER display, the CD display or the AUX display. Turn the power ‘Off’to standby mode. At the selected ‘On’ time the system will turn on automatically to the last function selected, either TUNER or CD. The TIMER ON indicator flashes in the display It will play for one hour and then shut off automatically. Note: If the system turns on to CD function it will only play until the end of the disc and then stop. Notes: • As long as the TIMER ON indicator remains in the display the timer will turn the system on every day at the same time. • To deactivate the timer press and hold the button on front panel or SLEEP/ TIMER ON button on remote control for at least 3 seconds until the TIMER ON indicator disappears from the display. • To reactivate the timer press and hold the button on front panel or SLEEP/ TIMER ON button on remote control for at least 3 seconds until the TIMER ON indicator reappears in the display. 30 ES25_072904.p65 30 30/7/2004, 11:34 SLEEP TIMER This system includes a programmable Sleep Timer that allows you to fall asleep to between “00” and “120” minutes of music and then shuts the power ‘Off’ automatically. To Operate The Sleep Timer: 1.) Turn the system ‘On’and operate either the TUNER or CD function as usual. 2.) Adjust the main VOLUME and VARIABLE BASS CONTROL level controls to the desired level. Remember that the level you select for the sleep to music function is the same level you will hear when the timer turns the system ‘On’in the morning. 3.) Press the button on front panel or SLEEP/TIMER ON button on remote control once. 4.) The display will show “00”. Continue pressing the button on front panel or SLEEP/TIMER ON button on remote control to increase the amount of sleep timer operation. Each time you press the or SLEEP/TIMER ON button you increase the sleep time by 30 minutes, i.e. 30, 60, 90, 120. Release the or SLEEP/TIMER ON button when the display shows the desired amount of Sleep timer operation. 5.) After a few seconds the Sleep Time display disappears and the normal Tuner or CD display returns. When the Sleep Timer counts down to “00”, the power shuts off automatically. 31 ES25_072904.p65 31 30/7/2004, 11:34 Notes: • You can shut the unit off manually before the Sleep Timer counts down to “00” by pressing the STANDBY/ON button at any time. • Remember that if you are falling asleep to CD you will also wake to CD, and if you fall asleep to the Tuner you will also wake to the Tuner. • If you are falling asleep to CD, the system will only operate until the CD ends. If you set the Sleep Timer for 90 minutes but your CD is only 45 minutes long, the music will stop after 45 minutes. LISTENING TO AUXILIARY SOUND SOURCES (Main Unit Only) 1.) Connect the Audio Output jacks of your auxiliary sound source (TV, VCR, DVD Player, Cassette Deck, Mini Disc player, etc., etc.,) to the AUX IN jack on the front panel of the Amplifier/Subwoofer unit. The connection cables are not included. 2.) Press the STANDBY/ON button on the front panel or remote control to turn this system ‘On’. 3.) Press the AUX button on the front panel to select the Auxiliary Source function. The AUX indicator appears in the display together with the correct time. 4.) Turn your auxiliary source ‘On’and operate it as usual. The sound from the auxiliary source will be heard through the speakers of this system. 5.) Adjust the main VOLUME and VARIABLE BASS CONTROL level controls of this system as desired. 32 ES25_072904.p65 32 30/7/2004, 11:34 CARE AND MAINTENANCE COMPACT DISC CARE • To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges. • Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off the disc’s recorded surface with a soft cloth.Unlike conventional records, compact discs have no grooves to collect dust and microscopic debris, so gently wiping with a soft cloth should remove most particles. Wipe in a straight line from the inside to the outside of the disc. Small dust particles and light stains will have absolutely no effect on reproduction quality. • Clean the disc periodically with a soft, lint-free, dry cloth. Never use detergents or abrasive cleaners to clean the disc. If necessary, use a CD cleaning kit. • Never write on or affix labels to the surface of compact discs. CARE OF THE CABINET If the cabinet becomes dusty wipe it with a soft dry dust cloth. Do not use any wax, polish sprays, or abrasive cleaners on the cabinet.
