Excalibur Electronics Deluxe LCD Bridge OPERATING MANUAL www.ExcaliburElectronics.com Model No. 417-D C ongratulations on your purchase of Excalibur Electronics’ Deluxe LCD Bridge. It’s the most realistic handheld bridge game there is! You’ll get hours of fun—and great practice—playing against the computer. Deluxe LCD Bridge is easy to use, but be sure to use it safely. Before starting, please read this manual thoroughly, especially noting safety, care and battery information. Keep this manual for reference. Installing the Batteries Your Deluxe LCD Bridge requires 3 AAA batteries, not included. To install the batteries, carefully turn Deluxe LCD Bridge over so that the unit is face-down on a soft surface. Find the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw. Lift off the battery compartment lid. Install the batteries, making sure to match polarity (+ and -). Place the tab of the battery compartment lid in its slot and close the compartment door. Replace the screw and tighten. If you need to review the complete rules of bridge or the meaning of bridge terms, just go to: www.ExcaliburElectronics.com Layout of Deluxe LCD Bridge DISPLAY AUTOPLAY ON/OFF CARD VALUES (A THROUGH 1) CLAIM DOUBLE REVIEW SUITS NT (NO TRUMP) SCORE/HINT PASS CLEAR/UNDO CURSOR ENTER Functions of Buttons ON/OFF: Turns the display on and off. The current game is retained in the memory when the computer is turned off. AUTOPLAY: The computer plays the rest of the cards of the game in progress. CLAIM: Claims the tricks you expect to win of the game in progress. This saves the time it would take to finish the game on your own. REVIEW: During bidding, will allow you to view the record of bidding. During play, will allow you to view the last trick played. 3 SCORE/HINT: Press once to view the current score. Press twice, and it will provide the computer’s suggested bid (during bidding) or the computer’s suggested card to play (during the game in progress). CLEAR/UNDO: Returns to the last step or exits the game in progress. CURSOR: Can be used to change the selected function, to review more information, to select a card to play or to bid. ENTER: To confirm the selected function, bid or led card displayed on the screen. PASS: To Pass during bidding. NT (NO TRUMP): To bid No Trump during bidding. DOUBLE: To select Double or Redouble during bidding. SUITS (SPADES, HEARTS, DIAMONDS CLUBS): To select the suit to be bid or played. OR CARD VALUES (A THROUGH 1): After selecting the suit, selects the value of the card to be bid or played. Also selects the number of tricks you expect to win if you decide to claim the rest of the hand. Playing Deluxe LCD Bridge Your Deluxe LCD Bridge pits you against the computer. Excalibur research labs have brought you the latest in bridge technology. You can either make your own choices in bidding and playing the hand, or you can get hints from the computer on what it thinks you should do. Deluxe LCD Bridge allows you to choose from three different levels of difficulty to improve your play. The hands have been carefully researched to provide you with instructional and entertaining hands to play. Contract bridge scoring is used to keep track of the number of points you have accumulated while playing. 4 Bidding 1. Press ON/OFF to turn on the unit. “Play game” is displayed. 2. Press ENTER. “Rand Deal” is displayed. 3. Press ENTER. The cards have been dealt randomly to each player. You are in the South chair. 4. Because the computer assigns who the dealer is randomly, you may open the bidding or have to wait for the other players to bid. When the South frame flashes and “Bid: Pass” is displayed on the LCD, it’s your turn to bid. Note: At any time during the bidding, you may press the CLEAR/UNDO button to stop the bidding. “Exit Game?” is then displayed. Press ENTER to confirm your action. 5. To bid, press a SUIT button or the NT button, and then a CARD VALUE button. You can also press the DOUBLE button to double your opponent’s bid, or press PASS. An alternative way to select your bid is to use the CURSOR. Press the right and left sides of the CURSOR to scroll through your bidding choices. 6. Press ENTER to confirm your bid. 7. Every time the South frame flashes it’s your turn to bid again. The bidding will continue until there have been three consecutive pass- es. Bidding is then over and the playing phase of the game begins. Note: If a bid is doubled, an “X” is displayed as that player’s bid. If a bid is redoubled, “XX” is displayed as that player’s bid. After the bidding is over, the “X” or “XX” will be displayed next to the declarer’s bid to indicate that the bid has been doubled or redoubled. Playing 1. When the South frame flashes, it’s your turn to lead a card. If North is declarer or dummy, you will play both the North and South hands, and the 13 cards of the dummy hand will be displayed at the top of the screen. You may select a card by using the SUIT and CARD VALUES buttons or by using the CURSOR (see Bidding, number 5 above). Note: At any time during the play, you may press the CLEAR/UNDO button to leave the game. “Exit Game?” is then displayed. Press ENTER to confirm your action. 2. Press ENTER to confirm your card choice. When each player has played a card, they will all be dis played on the table. Press ENTER to clear the table and to start play ing the next trick. Note: If you wish to review the last trick, press REVIEW before you play your next card. Then press CLEAR/UNDO to continue play. 3. The number of tricks your opponents have won is displayed below the East hand. The number of tricks that you and your partner have won is displayed behind the South hand. 4. The play continues until all 13 tricks have been won by one of the partnerships. After the last trick has been played, the score of the hand will be displayed. Press CLEAR/UNDO to return to the Deal menu. Note: If you and your partner have won one game, then “Vulnerable” will be displayed behind North. If your opponents have won one game, then “Vulnerable” will be displayed below the West cards. 5 To select the Game Level You may select one of three different levels: Beginner, Normal and Advance. The computer is preset at the Beginner level. If you would like to change to another level, press CLEAR/UNDO until “Play game” is displayed. Then press the right side of the CURSOR and “Game level” is displayed. Press ENTER, and “Beginner” will be displayed. Press the right side of the CURSOR to select the next level of “Normal” and then press again for “Advance.” Press the side of the CURSOR repeatedly until “Clear Score” is displayed. Press ENTER to reset the score to zero (0). “Score Reset!” is then displayed. Press CLEAR/UNDO to return to your previous screen. To select the Dealing Option There are two dealing options before you start a new hand. The computer is preset at the Random Option. Press CLEAR/UNDO until “Play game” is displayed. Press ENTER and “Rand deal” is displayed. Then press the right side of the CURSOR and “Same deal” is displayed. Press the left side of the CURSOR to return to “Rand deal.” When you have made your selection, press ENTER. Rubber bridge is usually an informal type of play, while Duplicate is the mode used for tournament play. If you would like to change to another level, press CLEAR/UNDO until “Play game” is displayed. Then press the right side of the CURSOR twice and “Game Mode” is displayed. Press ENTER, and “Rubber” will be displayed. Press the right side of the CURSOR to select the next mode of “Duplicate.” Press the left side of the CURSOR to return to the “Rubber” mode. When you have made your selection, press ENTER. Press CLEAR/UNDO to return to “Play game.” To get a Hint Press SCORE/HINT twice during either bidding or playing to get a hint. The computer will then display a suggested bid or play for you. Press ENTER to accept the hint, or CLEAR/UNDO to cancel the Hint display and then make your own bid or play. To view the Score Press the SCORE/HINT button to review the current score. Press the down side of the CURSOR to review the total scores for both hands of NS (North/South) and EW (East/West.) To clear the Score Press CLEAR/UNDO until “Play game” is displayed. Do not use cleaners with chemical agents. • Avoid moisture and extreme temperatures. For best results, use between the temperatures of 39ºF and 100ºF (4º C and 38º C). Battery Information & Special Care • Batteries should be installed or replaced only by an adult. • Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable (nickelcadmium) batteries. • Your Deluxe LCD Bridge uses 3 AAA batteries, not included. • Do not mix old and new batteries. • Remove exhausted batteries from the unit. • • • • Do not use rechargeable batteries. Do not short circuit battery terminals. Remove batteries and store them in a cool, dry place when not in use. To avoid explosion or leakage, do not dispose of batteries in a fire or attempt to recharge alkaline or other non-rechargeable batteries. Deluxe LCD Bridge may lock up due to static discharge or other electrical disturbances. If this should happen, use a slim, pointed object to press the button marked “RESET” on the back of the unit. 7 Limited 90-Day Warranty EXCALIBUR ELECTRONICS, INC., warrants to the original consumer that its products are free from any electrical or mechanical defects for a period of 90 DAYS from the date of purchase.
