Gaggia Thermostat Replacement Instructions
Applies to: Gaggia Semi-Automatic Espresso Makers excluding Espresso Pure,
Dose, and Color
The following instructions are designed to make the replacement of the Gaggia
thermostats quick easy and safe.
Please read the entire instructions before you start.
Tools Required
Phillips Screwdriver #2
Straight Screwdriver 1/8”
Step-By-Step Instructions
1. Unplug your Gaggia and make sure it is cool before beginning.
2. Remove the top of the machine.
a. The Classic and Coffee have two screws on the top, near the back of the
black water fill funnel.
b. The Carezza has one screw in the funnel that leads to the reservoir. You
also have to remove the screw on top of the steam knob and then the steam
knob. After removing the screw on the steam knob simply pull it straight
up and off of the machine.
c. The Espresso has one very long screw that holds the top on and it is
located in the funnel that leads to the reservoir. Be careful when remove
the top of the Espresso, do not force it or it may crack. Hold the top near
the funnel and flip the piece forward towards the front of the machine.
d. The Evolution has one long screw underneath a small oval plastic cover in
the cup warming tray. Remove the steam knob by firmly pulling it away
from the body of the machine. If this part is stuck, use a flat screwdriver
to gently pry it straight off. Lift the top near the rear edge and pull the
entire panel up towards the front left corner of the machine.
3. With the top off you can see the boiler. It is the large silver block directly over the
brew group with many the wires leading to it.
4. The Gaggia boiler has two thermostats. One for steaming and one for brewing.
a. The steam thermostat is on the top face of the boiler, located on the center
of one side. The steam thermostat has an orange dot on it to differentiate
it from the brew thermostat.
b. The brew thermostat is threaded into the bottom left side of the boiler.
5. Remove the two wires that are on the thermostat you are changing. Carefully pull
the wires straight off by firmly pulling on their covers. The covers are rectangular
and plastic. Use a wrench on the lower brass part of thermostat to unscrew
it—Turn it counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it.

6. Carefully screw the new thermostat back into place. Be careful to tighten it by
turning the lower brass part of the thermostat only, preferably by hand to avoid
over tightening it.
7. Reattach the two wires to the new thermostat.
8. Refasten the top onto the espresso machine.
9. Refill the water tank, re-attach the drip tray, and plug the machine in. Turn the
main power switch on and test the boiler to make sure it properly heats.
