Gaggia Classic Performance Test The following guide will assist you in conducting specific tests on your espresso machine. The results of these tests will help us to identify any mechanical, electrical or hydraulic issues your machine may be experiencing. These tests must be performed in the order listed below. Required Tools: Timer, 12 oz paper or styrofoam cup, Thermometer, Measuring cup(s), 20 oz Frothing pitcher or similar sized container. 1. Fill the reservoir with water and perform an ‘Initial Heat Up Test” A. Turn on the machine and start a timer. B. Turn on the brew switch, open the steam knob and run 2 oz of water through the steam wand and then close the knob and turn off the brew switch. C. When the Orange temperature ready light illuminates stop the timer and record the time. Time: _____ 2. Perform a Three Way Solenoid Valve and Steam Valve Test. A. Place a dry cup under the steam wand and another dry cup under the brew group. B. Let the machine heat up for 20 minutes and record how much water has leaked into the cups: Steam Wand: ____ oz. Brew Group ____ oz. C. Do a second test, dry the cups and place them back under the brew group and steam wand. Turn on the brew and steam switch at the same time and leave on for 20 seconds the turn off. Check for leakage. Steam Wand does it leak (yes or no) _____ Describe how much: ____ Brew Group does it leak (yes or no) _____ Describe how much: ____ 3. Perform a Hot Water Test. (Checks boiler temperature, pump operation and steam valve) A. Turn on the brew switch run 6 oz of hot water through the steam wand into a preheated measuring cup (preheat with hot water from the sink). Time how long it takes to run the 6 oz of hot water and record the temperature. Time: _____ Temperature: _____ B. Perform this test a second time. Turn on the brew switch run 6 oz of hot water through the steam wand into a preheated measuring cup (preheat with hot water from the sink). Time how long it takes to run the 6 oz of hot water and the temperature. Time: _____ Temperature: _____ 4. Perform a “Steam Tests”. A. With this test we want to steam 8 oz of water at room temperature up to 160 degrees and record the amount of time that it took. a. Push the steam button and time how long it takes to heat to steam temperature (Temp ready light comes on) and record the time. Time: ____ b. Open the steam knob for three seconds and purge any water out of it.. c. Place a frothing pitcher or container with 8 oz of room temperature water under the wand and open the steam knob steam knob and start a timer. When the water reaches 160 degrees stop the timer and record the time. Time: _____
