WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from the vehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

2 nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manualGetting StartedBefore mounting the nüvi, see the Important Safety and Product Information guide for information about laws pertaining to windshield mounting. Step 1: Mount Your nüvi1. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of your nüvi. 2. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm. 3. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup. Clean and dry your windshield and the suction cup with a lint-free cloth. Press the suction cup rmly on the windshield.4. Flip the lever back toward the windshield.5. Fit the bottom of your nüvi into the cradle.6. Tilt your nüvi back until it snaps into place. 7. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. Your unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and the vehicle is running.8. If you are using a trafc receiver in Europe, connect the external antenna to the trafc receiver and secure the external antenna to the windshield using the suction cups. To turn your nüvi off, slide the Power key to the left.Step 3: Acquire Satellites1. Go outdoors to an open area, away from tall buildings and trees.2. Turn on your nüvi. Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars indicate satellite strength. When at least one of the bars is green, your nüvi has acquired satellite signals. Now you can select a destination and navigate to it.Step 4: Use Your nüvi➊ ➋ ➌ ➍➎ ➏➐ ➑ ➒➊ GPS satellite strength➋ Bluetooth® technology status (Available on the nüvi 215, 215W, 265, 265W, 275, and 285W.)➌ Battery status➍ Current time. The detailed maps loaded in your nüvi contain millions of points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and auto services. 1. Touch Where to?.2. Select a category.3. Select a subcategory.4. Select a destination.5. Touch Go!. TIP: Touch and to see more choices.

The nüvi gives you directions to the Via Point and then to your nal destination. 1. With a route active, touch Menu > Where to?. 2. Search for the extra stop. 3. Touch Go!.4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your destination. Touch Set as new Destination to make this your nal destination. Taking a Detour1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Detour. The nüvi attempts to get you back on your original route as quickly as possible. If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour.Stopping the Route1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Stop. Adjusting the VolumeFrom the Menu page, touch Volume. Touch and to adjust the volume. Touch the box next to Mute to mute all audio. Locking the ScreenTo prevent accidental screen touches, slide the Power key to the right ( ). To unlock the screen, slide the Power key to the center position.

To learn how to perform a simple search, see page 4. Finding an Address NOTE: Depending on the version of the maps loaded on your nüvi, the button names can change and some steps could be ordered differently.1. Touch Where to? > Address. 2. Change the state, country, or province, if necessary.3. Touch Spell City, enter the city/postal code, and touch Done. Select the city/postal code in the list. (Not all map data provides postal code searching.) If you are unsure of the city, touch Search All. 4. Enter the number of the address, and touch Done. 5. Enter the street name, and touch Done.6. Select the correct street in the list, if necessary.7. Touch the address, if necessary. Setting a Home LocationSet your home location for the place you return to most often.1. To set your home location, touch Where to? > Go Home.2. Select an option:Enter your address.Use your current location.Choose from a list of recently found locations.Going HomeTo navigate home after you have set your home location, touch Where to? > Go Home.•••

Touch Edit, enter your changes, and touch Done.If you delete your home location, you can reset it by following the steps on page 6.•••Go! You can also enter letters contained in the name to narrow the search. 1. Touch Where to? > Points of Interest > Spell Name.2. Using the on-screen keyboard, enter letters of the name of your destination. Touch Done. Using the On-Screen KeyboardWhen an on-screen keyboard appears, touch a letter or number to enter it. Touch to add a space. Touch and to move the cursor. Touch to delete a character. Touch and hold to erase the entire entry.Touch Mode to select the keyboard language mode. Touch &?% to enter special characters, such as punctuation marks.Searching Near AnotherNear Another Location1. Touch Where to? > Near….2. Select an option:Where I Am Now—search near your current location. A Different City—search near the city you enter. ••

The most-recently viewed places appear at the top of the list. Touch Where to? > Recently Found to view your recently found items. Deleting Recently Found PlacesTo remove all places from the Recently Found list, touch Clear > Yes. NOTE: When you touch Clear, all items in the list are removed. This process does not delete the actual place from your nüvi.••FavoritesvoritesYou can save places in your Favorites so you can quickly nd them and create routes to them. Your home location is also stored in Favorites. Saving Your Current LocationFrom the Map page, touch . Touch Save Location to save your current location. Saving Places You Find1. From the Go! page, touch Save. 2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites. Finding Saved Places1. Touch Where to?.2. Touch Favorites. Your saved locations are listed.

Touch an item to edit:Change Name—enter a new name, and touch Done. Attach Photo—select a picture that you have loaded on your nüvi or on a memory card to assign to the location. Change Map Symbol—touch a new symbol used to mark this location on the map. Change Phone Number— enter a phone number, and touch Done.Change Categories—select another category for the location.Delete—touch Yes to remove this item from the Favorites list. ••••••Finding a Place Using the MapUse the Browse Map page to view different parts of the map. Touch Where to? > Browse Map. Tips for Browsing the MapTouch the map, and drag to view different parts of the map. Touch and to zoom in and out. Touch any object on the map. An arrow appears pointing at the object. Touch Save to save this location. Touch Go! to navigate to the location. If the GPS mode is off, touch Set Loc to set your location to the selected location. (See page 33.)••••••

nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manual 11Where to?Entering CoordinatesIf you know the geographic coordinates of your destination, you can use your nüvi to navigate to your destination using the latitude and longitude coordinates. This can be especially helpful when geocaching.1. Touch Where to? > Coordinates.2. Touch a box to enter a coordinate.3. Touch Format to change the type of coordinates. Because different maps and charts use different coordinate formats, the nüvi allows you to select the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using.4. Enter the coordinates, and touch Next.Using Photo NavigationPanoramio™ provides pictures that include location information. You can load these pictures on your nüvi or on a memory card and create routes to them. Go to http://connect .garmin.com/photos to download pictures with location information. See page 20 for more information.1. Touch Where to? > Favorites > Panoramio Photos. Pictures you have saved on the nüvi drive or on the memory card are listed. 2. Touch a picture.Navigating Off RoadIf you are not following roadways as you navigate, use Off Road mode. Touch Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preference > Off Road > OK. Walking to a DestinationIf you are walking to your destination, use Pedestrian mode to optimize your route for walking. Touch Tools > Settings > System > Usage Mode > Pedestrian > OK.

As you travel, your nüvi guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows on the map, and directions at the top of the map. A checkered ag marks your destination. If you depart from the original route, your nüvi recalculates the route and provides new directions. ➊ ➋➌➍➎ TIP: A speed limit icon could appear as you travel on major roadways. This icon displays the current speed limit of the roadway.➊Touch to view the next turn.➋ Touch to view the turn list.➌Touch to zoom in and zoom out.➍Touch to view the Where Am I? page.➎ Touch to view the trip computer.

nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manual 13Using the MapTrip ComputerThe trip computer displays your current speed and provides helpful statistics about your trip. To view the trip computer, touch the Speed eld on the map. If you make frequent stops, leave the nüvi turned on so it can accurately measure elapsed time during the trip. Resetting the Trip ComputerReset the trip computer before beginning a trip. From the map, touch the Speed eld. Touch Reset Trip to reset the information on the trip computer. Touch Reset Max to reset the maximum speed.Turn ListWhen you are navigating a route, the turn list displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. Touch the text bar on the top of the map to open the turn list. Touch a turn on the list to view the next turn for that turn. Touch Show Map to view the entire route on the browse map page. Next TurnWhen you are navigating a route, the next turn shows the turn on the map and the distance and time left before you reach the turn. To view an upcoming turn on the map, touch the turn indicator on the map, or touch any turn from the turn list.

14 nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manualMaking Hands-Free Phone CallsMaking Hands-Free Phone CallsBluetooth wireless technology is available on the nüvi 215, 215W, 265, 265W, 275, and 285W.Using Bluetooth wireless technology, your nüvi can connect to your mobile phone to become a hands-free device. To determine whether your mobile phone with Bluetooth technology is compatible with the nüvi, go to www.garmin.com /bluetooth.Bluetooth wireless technology establishes a wireless link between devices, such as a mobile phone and the nüvi. The rst time you use two devices together you must “pair” them by establishing a relationship using a PIN or passkey. After the initial pairing, the two devices can connect automatically each time you turn them on. NOTE: You might have to set your mobile phone to connect to the nüvi automatically when it is turned on.Pairing Your PhoneTo pair and connect, your phone and the nüvi must be turned on and be within 10 meters of each other. Initiate pairing from your nüvi or from your phone. Refer to your phone instructions.To pair using your phone settings:1. Enable the Bluetooth setting on your nüvi. Touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth.2. Select Enabled.3. Enable the Bluetooth component on your phone. This might be in a menu called Settings, Bluetooth, Connections, or Hands-free.

nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manual 15Making Hands-Free Phone Calls4. Initiate a search for Bluetooth devices. 5. Select the nüvi from the list of devices. 6. Enter the nüvi Bluetooth PIN (1234) into your phone. To pair using the nüvi settings:1. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth > Add.2. Enable the Bluetooth component on your phone, and enable Find Me/Discoverable/Visible mode. These settings might be in a Bluetooth, Connections, or Hands-free menu.3. Touch OK on the nüvi.4. Select your phone, and touch OK.5. Enter the nüvi Bluetooth PIN (1234) in your phone.When your phone is connected to your nüvi, you are ready to make phone calls. Touch Phone to access the Phone menu.When you turn on the nüvi, it tries to connect to the last phone to which it was connected. NOTE: Not all phones support all features of the nüvi Phone menu. Receiving a Call When you get a call, the Incoming Call window opens. Touch Answer to answer the call. Touch Ignore to ignore the call and stop your phone from ringing. The internal microphone is in the front of the nüvi; speak normally.

Touch > Call Options for the following options: Touch Tones—displays a keypad page so that you can use automated systems, such as voice mail. Transfer Audio To Phone—this is helpful if you want to turn off the nüvi but remain on the call, or if you need privacy. To switch back, touch Transfer Audio To Device.Mute Microphone. NOTE: Depending on the screen that appears on your nüvi, the In Call icon could look different. •••Using Call WaitingWhen you are on a call and you receive a second call (call waiting), the Incoming Call window appears. Touch Answer to answer the call. The rst call is placed on hold. To switch between calls:1. Touch > Switch To. 2. Touch End Call to hang up. This does not disconnect the call on hold. Phone MenuFrom the Menu page, touch Phone to open the Phone menu. NOTE: Not all phones support all features of the nüvi Phone menu.

It can take a few minutes for the phone book to be available. Phone book transfer is not available on all phones.1. Touch Phone > Phone Book. 2. Touch the phone book entry (contact) you want to call. 3. Touch Dial to call the contact. Dialing a Point of Interest1. Touch Phone > Points of Interest. 2. Search for the point of interest you want to call. 3. Touch Dial or touch the phone number.Dialing a Number1. Touch Phone > Dial. 2. Enter the number, and touch Dial.Viewing Your Call HistoryEach time your phone connects to the nüvi, your call history is automatically transferred to the nüvi. It can take a few minutes to transfer this data to the nüvi.1. Touch Phone > Call History. 2. Touch a category to view those calls. The calls are listed in chronological order. The most-recent calls are at the top of the list. 3. Touch an entry, and touch Dial.Calling HomeEnter a phone number for your home location so you can quickly call home.

Touch Enter Phone Number to use the keypad page or Select From Phonebook (only available if your phone supports phone book transfer).3. Touch Done > Yes. The nüvi dials your home phone number. NOTE: To edit your home location or phone number, touch Where to? > Favorites > Home > Edit. To call home:1. Touch Phone > Call Home. 2. The nüvi dials your home phone number.Placing Calls Using Voice DialYou can place calls by speaking the contact’s name. 1. Touch Phone > Voice Dial. 2. Speak the contact name. NOTE: You might need to “train” your phone to recognize your voice dial commands. Refer to your phone instructions. Phone StatusCheck the battery level and signal strength for your phone by touching Phone > Status.

nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manual 19Managing FilesManaging FilesYou can store les, such as JPEG image les, in the internal memory on the nüvi or on a memory card. NOTE: The nüvi is not compatible with Windows® 95, 98, Me, or Windows NT®. It is also not compatible with Mac® OS 10.3 and earlier. This is a common limitation of most USB mass storage devices. Supported File TypesJPEG and JPG image les: see pages 25–26Maps and GPX waypoint les from MapSource®: see page 45GPI custom POI les from Garmin’s POI Loader: see page 46•••Loading FilesStep 1: Insert a Memory Card (Optional)To insert or remove the memory card, press it in until it clicks. Step 2: Connect the USB CableConnect the mini-USB connector to the back of the nüvi. Connect the larger end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer. Your nüvi and memory card appear as removable drives in My Computer on Windows computers and as mounted volumes on Mac computers. NOTE: Some operating systems or computers with multiple network drives can not display the nüvi drives. See your operating system Help le to learn how to map the drives.

Browse your computer for the le you want to copy. 2. Highlight the le, and click Edit > Copy. 3. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume.4. Click Edit > Paste. The le appears in the list of les in the nüvi memory or on the memory card. Step 4: Eject and Unplug the USB CableWhen you are nished transferring les, click in your toolbar (system tray), or drag the volume icon to the Trash on Mac computers. Unplug your nüvi from your computer.Loading Pictures for Photo Navigation1. Connect your nüvi to your computer.2. Go to http://connect.garmin.com /photos, and sign in.3. Select a photo.4. Follow the on-screen instructions. See page 11 and go to http://connect.garmin.com/photos for more information.Deleting Files Connect the nüvi to your computer, and open the nüvi or memory card drive/volume. Highlight the le you want to delete, and press the Delete key on the computer keyboard.CAUTION: If you do not know the purpose of a le, do not delete it. Your nüvi memory contains important system les that should not be deleted.

From the Menu page, touch Tools to access the Tools menu. SettingsFor information about the settings, see pages 33–39.Where Am I?Touch Where Am I? to view current location information, including hospitals, police stations, and fuel. This feature is helpful if you need to tell emergency personnel your location. Touch Save Location to save your current location.HelpTouch Help to get information about using your nüvi. MSN® DirectYou can only access MSN Direct content with an optional MSN Direct receiver.For more information, visit http://garmin.msndirect.com or www.garmin.com/trafc. 22 nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manualUsing the ToolsecoRoute™The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle’s fuel economy, carbon footprint, and fuel price of navigating to a destination and offers tools for improving fuel efciency.The data provided by the ecoRoute feature are estimates only. The data is not actually read from your vehicle. To receive more accurate fuel reports for your specic vehicle and driving habits, calibrate the fuel economy. See page 23.Touch Tools > ecoRoute. The rst time you access the ecoRoute features you will be asked to enter fuel and mileage information about your vehicle. View the Fuel ReportIf you have entered your vehicle prole and the current fuel price, your nüvi calculates your vehicle’s average fuel economy, your carbon footprint, and the cost of the fuel consumed.To view the fuel report, touch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Report. The fuel consumption data is based on estimates for speed and acceleration for an average vehicle. TIP: To ensure fuel data is always recorded, keep your nüvi turned on while driving.Touch Reset to reset the data.

nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manual 23Using the ToolsCalibrate the Fuel EconomyCalibrate the fuel economy to receive more accurate fuel reports for your specic vehicle and driving habits. Calibrate when you ll up your fuel tank.1. Calculate your miles per gallon or liters per 100 kilometers. 2. Touch Calibrate. 3. Touch + and - to enter the result from step 1. 4. Touch OK.Adjust the Fuel PriceTouch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Price and enter the current fuel price. This information is used to calculate the fuel cost of routes and used to calculate the fuel reports. Take the Driving ChallengeThe Driving Challenge tool helps you maximize your fuel economy by scoring your driving habits. The higher your overall score for a Driving Challenge, the more fuel you could save. To take a Driving Challenge, touch Tools > ecoRoute > Driving Challenge, then touch Start. Your overall score is the average of three scores:

24 nüvi 205 and 205W series owner’s manualUsing the ToolsAcceleration score—gain points for gradual acceleration; lose points for rapid acceleration.Deceleration score—gain points for gradual braking; lose points for hard braking.Speed score—gain points for driving at the best speed for conserving fuel, which is 45–60 mph for most vehicles. Touch on the map page to view details about your current challenge. The leaf color on the driving challenge icon changes depending on your performance in the challenge.When viewing the details, touch Stop > Yes to stop the current challenge.To reset your best scores, touch Reset.Adjust Your Vehicle ProleYou will create a vehicle prole the rst time you touch Tools > ecoRoute. To minimize the risk of damage to your nüvi, avoid dropping your unit and operating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments.Cleaning the UnitThe nüvi is constructed of high-quality materials and does not require user maintenance other than cleaning. Clean the outer casing of the unit (not the touch screen) using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, and then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can damage plastic components.Cleaning the Touch ScreenClean the touch screen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner, if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touch screen.Protecting Your nüviDo not store the nüvi where prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can occur, because it can cause permanent damage. The battery icon in the corner of the Menu page indicates the status of the nüvi battery. To increase the accuracy of the battery gauge, fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the nüvi until it is totally charged. Charging Your nüviConnect the vehicle power cable to the mini-USB connector on your nüvi and to a power outlet in your vehicle. The vehicle key may need to be turned to ON/ACC for the nüvi to charge.Connect an AC adapter (optional accessory) to the nüvi and a wall outlet.••Connect your nüvi to a computer using a USB cable. The USB cable is included with some nüvi 205 and 205W packages.
