35addendum.qxd 9/9/99 10:21 AM Q U I C K Page 1 S T A R T G U I D E GPS 35 PC The GARMIN GPS 35 PC is designed for easy installation and initialization. For best performance, please refer to the following instructions. Mounting the GPS The GPS 35 PC is designed for use in the automotive environment, and should be mounted with the optional magnetic, suction cup, trunk lip or surface mount (not included). Make sure you select a location where the receiver has the clearest view of the sky possible for best results. Keep in mind that GPS signals do not travel through buildings, metal, roofs, road signs, people or other significant structures. Mounting the receiver in the highest possible location usually works best. Electrical Connections Your GPS 35 PC features a standard DB-9 serial connector and cigarette lighter plug for connection to your PC serial data port and 12 volt DC power source. Plug the cigarette lighter plug into a 12 vDC receptacle, and connect the 9-pin D connector to the serial port of your PC. Note that the cigarette lighter plug has a user-replaceable in-line fuse to protect the GPS. The DB-9 connector uses the following pin-out format: PIN 2: Data Transmit PIN 3: Data Receive PIN 5: Signal Ground Initialization Once you apply the correct power to the GPS for first-time use, it will begin searching for satellites in AutoLocateTM mode. This process will initialize the receiver, and should compute your position in no more than 5 minutes. After the GPS has been initialized, you will usually acquire a fix within a minute. If you have trouble acquiring a fix or losing satellite signals, double check the installation to verify that the antenna is correctly installed with a clear view of the sky. If you move more than 1500 miles with the receiver off, the GPS will automatically re-initialize itself to your new position (which may again take up to another 5 minutes). © 1999 GARMIN International Part #190-00115-00 Rev.
