To controlyour exposure and ensure compliance with the generalpopulation/uncontrolled environment exposure limits, always adhere tothe following procedure:• Transmit no more than 50% of the time.• To receive calls, release the PTT button.• To transmit (talk), press the Push to Talk (PTT) button.Transmitting 50% of the time, or less, is important because the radiogenerates measurable RF energy exposure only when transmitting (interms of measuring standards compliance). Turn the radio off.2. With the back of the radio facing you, lift the battery latch up torelease the battery cover and remove the cover.3. Insert three AA Alkaline batteries as shown on the inside of thebattery compartment.4. Reposition the battery cover and press down to secure.NOTE: The FV500 model radio can use a NiMH rechargeable batteryinstead of three AA batteries. A rechargeable battery upgrade kit isavailable. Installing the NiMh Battery Pack:1. Turn the radio off.2. Follow step 2 above to remove the battery cover.3. Remove the battery pack from the clear plastic bag. Do notdisassemble or unwrap the battery pack.4. Insert the NiMH battery pack so the metal contacts on the side of thebattery are facing outward from the radio to connect with thecontacts on the battery door.5. Reposition the battery cover and press down to secure.Battery Meter The battery icon shows the battery charge level, from fullto empty . When the battery is empty, the radio chirps periodicallyafter releasing . The radio powers off when the voltage drops belowa predetermined level to protect the rechargeable battery. Note: Remove the batteries before storing your radio for extendedperiods of time. Batteries corrode over time and may cause permanentdamage to your radio.Talking and ListeningTo communicate, all radios in your group must be set to the samechannel and Interference Eliminator Code. 1. To talk, press and hold . 2. When you are finished talking, release . For maximum clarity, hold the radio two to three inches away from yourmouth and speak directly into the microphone. Do not cover themicrophone while talking.Talk RangeYour radio is designed to maximize performance and improvetransmission range. Do not use the radios closer than five feet apart.Push to Talk Timeout Timer To prevent accidental transmissions and save battery life, the radioemits a continuous warning tone and stops transmitting if you pressPTT for 60 continuous seconds.Checking the Channel Before Transmitting Your radio has multiple channels shared on a “take turns” basis. Foruninterrupted communication, do not talk on a channel if someone elseis currently talking on it. To check for activity on a channel before youtalk, press and hold or ZMON? for three seconds. If you hearstatic, the channel is clear to use.Using the Desk Stand Charger (Optional Accessory)The desk stand charger provides drop-in charging convenience forNiMH batteries and can be placed on any flat surface, such as a deskor workbench. Charge the NiMH battery overnight (at least 16 hours)before using it for the first time. After the initial charge, an emptybattery is fully charged within 14 hours. [NOTE: True?]1. Follow steps 1-5 from “Installing the NiMH Battery Pack” above.2. Plug the AC power supply into the plug on the desk stand. 3. Plug the AC power supply into a standard wall outlet.4. Remove the battery pocket inserts from the charger pockets.5. With a radio facing forward, slide it into one of the charging pockets.Notes• The light on the charging base will glow continuously whenradio/battery is inserted.• When moving between hot and cold temperatures, do not charge thebattery until the battery temperature acclimates (usually about 20minutes).• For optimal battery life, remove the radio or battery from the chargerwithin 16 hours. Setting the Sensitivity Level When in VOX or iVOX ModeAdjusting the radio’s sensitivity level helps minimize the possibility ofunintended noises triggering a transmission and helps the radio pick upsoft voices.1. Press or to select the sensitivity level.QT Noise FilteringThe QT noise-filtering feature helps to ensure uninterruptedcommunication with other Motorola radios that have this feature. Thisfeature filters out unwanted transmissions from other radios. Use of non-Motorola-approvedaccessories may exceed FCC/Health Canada RF exposure guidelines. If you do not use one of the Motorola-supplied or approved body-wornaccessories and are not using the radio held in the normal useposition, ensure the radio and its antenna are at least 1 inch (2.5 cm)from your body when transmitting.Battery Charger Safety Instructions:Save these Instructions1. Do not expose the charger to rain or snow.2. Do not operate or disassemble the charger if it has received a sharpblow, or has been dropped or damaged in any way.3. Never alter the AC cord or plug provided with the unit. If the plug willnot fit the outlet, have the proper outlet installed by a qualifiedelectrician. An improper condition can result in a risk of electricshock.4. To reduce the risk of damage to the cord or plug, pull the plug ratherthan the cord when disconnecting the charger from the AC receptacle.5. Note: The areas with potentially explosive atmospheres referred toabove include fueling areas such as below decks on boats, fuel orchemical transfer or storage facilities, areas where the air containschemicals or particles (such as grain, dust or metal powders) and anyother area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicleengine. Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres are often—but notalways—posted.Blasting Caps and AreasTo avoid possible interference with blasting operations, turn off yourradio when you are near electrical blasting caps, in a blasting area, or inareas posted “Turn off two-way radios.” Obey all signs and instructions.Operational CautionsAntennasDo not use any portable radio that has a damaged antenna. If a damagedantenna comes into contact with your skin, a minor burn can result.BatteriesAll batteries can cause property damage and/or bodily injury such asburns if a conductive material—like jewelry, keys or beaded chains—touch exposed terminals. The conductive material may complete anelectrical circuit (short circuit) and become quite hot. Exercise care inhandling any charged battery, particularly when placing it inside apocket, purse or other container with metal objects.Your Motorola radio operates on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)frequencies and is subject to the Rules and Regulations of the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC). It is like saying “Roger” or “Over” to let others know youare finished talking.1. With the radio on, short press MENU until the ·))) appears. Thecurrent setting On/Off flashes.2. Press + or – to turn On or Off.3. Press set or MENU to continue set up.Monitor Use this feature to see if there is anyone on the channel you haveselected.1. Short press MENU until RX appears. 2. When you finish listening, press PTT to confirm or MENU to continueset up.Note: Monitor will time out after five seconds if PTT or MENU is notpressedKeypad TonesYou may enable or disable the speaker key tones. You will hear the keytone each time a button is pushed.1. Short press until the current setting On/Off flashes and icon?appears.2. Press either + or – to turn On or Off.3. Press PTT to confirm or MENU to continue set up.When the Key Tone Feature is off, the following are not disabled:• Transmit timeout alert tone;• Power-down alert tone;• Low battery alert tone; or • The transmitted TCT tone. To transmit to a radio that has QT noise filtering turned on:1. Select the same channel and Interference Eliminator Code as theother radio.2. Press to send a call tone. This allows your voice to pass throughthe QT noise filter on the receiving radio. 3. Press and speak normally. Note: If you skip step 2, the beginning of your message may not beheard on the receiving radio. For a 320-second period, starting after thelast transmission, all transmissions received on the selected channeland code will pass through the QT noise filter.PPTMENUSpecial FeaturesKeypad LockTo avoid accidentally changing your radio settings: 1. Press MENU until [lock displays].2. When in lock mode, you can turn the radio on and off, adjust thevolume, receive, transmit, send a call tone, and monitor channels. Allother functions are locked.To unlock the radio, press MENU until [Lock} is no longer displayed. Scanning ChannelsUse scanning to monitor channels and codes for transmissions or tofind someone in your group who has accidentally changed channels.1. Press and release MON or ZMON. The scan indicator displays[icon].2. When the radio detects channel activity, it stops scanning and youcan hear the transmission.3. To respond to the transmitting, press PTT within five seconds.4. If no transmissions are found, press MON again to turn the scanfunction off. Note: If your radio’s Interference Eliminator Code is set to 0 whilescanning, the radio checks for activity in each channel regardless ofthe code used on the channel. If your radio’s Interference EliminatorCode is set to 1-38, the radio checks for activity only on channels usingcodes 1-38 and ignores channels using code 0.Advanced ScanIf the radio stops scanning on a channel you do not want to listen to,briefly press and release – or + to resume scanning for the next activechannel. 1. To prevent the radio from scanning a channel, press and hold + or –for at least three seconds, then release, when the scan first stops onthat channel. This temporarily removes the channel from the scanlist. 2. Press ZMON to exit scan mode.3. Press ZMON a second time to activate scan again. 4. To restore a previously deleted channel, turn the radio off and thenback on. The channel is now restored.Hands-Free Use With Accessories (VOX)You can transmit hands-free with the use of optional accessories. OnceVOX is turned on, the radio detects your voice and transmits when youspeak.1. Turn the radio off and plug the VOX accessory into the accessoryport.2. Press MENU while in Call Tone Selection to exit the Call menu andenter the VOX On/Off selection.3. The VOX icon and the On/Off icon will flash intermittently.4. Press + or – to select VOX. 5. To transmit, speak into accessory microphone. There is a short delaybetween the time you start talking and when the radio transmits.6. To turn VOX off, press MENU or remove the audio accessory.
