Contents Wall Anchors (for drywall only) Base Screws Optional Mounting Kit Nest Screwdriver Display Compatability Works with most popular systems: • 24 Volt, no C wire required • More details at X.com The energy management device is not compatible with millivolt or 110 V systems. 1. Switch Off Power Switch off power to your heating and air conditioning equipment either at your home’s breaker box or using a switch near the equipment. Or NOTE: Switching off power protects both you and your equipment. 2. Remove Cover Remove the cover of your old thermostat to reveal the wiring. NOTE: The typical home thermostat is connected to low-voltage wires—the same type used in doorbells and telephones. CAUTION: Do not attempt to connect to high-voltage wires. 3. Label Wires Use the stickers provided in this guide to label the wires for connection to energy management device. If you can’t match your old thermostat’s wiring to the stickers, visit X.com 4. Disconnect wires Disconnect the labeled wires from the old thermostat base and remove the base from the wall using the Nest Screwdriver. The Nest Screwdriver includes four different bits to fit the screws on most existing thermostats. NOTE: Pull the thermostat wires out as far as possible to prevent them from slipping back into the wall. If necessary, secure the wires by twisting them around a pencil. Is your thermostat on an electrical box? If your thermostat is attached to an electrical box, use the provided Optional Mounting Kit to complete installation. Optional Mounting Kit NOTE: Electrical boxes are rare in homes. 5a. Create holes in the wall Use the Nest base as a template to mark the wall with a pencil or a screw. Then use a screwdriver or drill to create starting holes in the wall. 5b. Insert wall anchors into wall Press the anchors into the holes as far as possible until the threading begins. Finish securing the anchors with the screwdriver. The anchors are only for mounting to plain drywall. For panelling, plasterand-lath, or if there is a stud behind the thermostat, use the screws alone and pre-drill a hole using a 3/32" bit. 6a. Attach base Pull the labeled wires through the center hole of the base and loosely attach the base to the wall. 6b. Adjust base Using the bubble level on the base, adjust the base so that it is level. Then tighten the screws. Bubble level 7. Reconnect wires Push and hold the connector while inserting each wire straight into the connector. Release when each wire is fully inserted. The exposed part of the wire should be trimmed to between 1/4 and 1/2 inches. Ensure the exposed wire is straight. 8. Attach display Make sure that the bundle of wires is flush with the connectors by pushing excess wire into the wall. This will ensure that the display connects properly to the base. Position the display directly on to the base with the logo at the top and press until it clicks into place. 9. Switch on power Switch on the power to your heating and air conditioning. 10. Get started Press the Nest Learning Thermostat to begin guided setup, or go to nest.com/support to view the Nest setup video. NOTE: If Nest needs to be recharged, a small red light will flash. You will be able to continue setup when the thermostat is fully charged. This may take up to several hours. For more information visit nest.com or call 855-4MY-NEST Or
