Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of your Eli Broadband Internet Security Appliance
from ELI, Inc.!
Based on the same technologies employed by corporations around the globe, Eli
delivers all of the features necessary to make the Internet a safe computing
environment for the broadband user. Eli combines a broadband modem and wireless
router with a full-featured firewall and best-of-breed anti-virus, spam and content
filtering solutions. Eli's managed approach is what makes the difference, though: all
configuration and updates to the system are maintained by the Eli team - not you!
Now, not only can you enjoy lightning-speed Internet access from all your PCs, and
share data on your internal network, you will be protected from a host of Internet
threats by the best-of-breed stealth firewall implemented on Eli, hiding you from
hackers and other malicious intruders.
And, if you are a DSL or cable modem user, you can scrap both your modem and
router – Eli replaces them both!

Getting to know Eli
Eli’s ports, including all cables connections, are located on the rear panel of the unit.
Back panel
Eli’s ports and switches
On Enables traffic to flow through WAN (Wide Area Network – the
Internet) port
Standby
Off Disables all traffic through WAN port
Eth Sets WAN port to be used as a 10/100 MBit port.
Use this setting if you plan to use Eli behind a router or cable
modem.
WAN SW
ADSL Set WAN port to be used as a DSL modem port.
Use this setting if you plan to replace your existing DSL
modem with Eli.
Reset Reset switch. Reboots Eli.
Use a pen or other small tool to depress the recessed reset
button.
LAN 1-4 These 4 LAN (Local Area Network) ports connect to network
devices, such as PCs, print servers and remote hard drives.
Use a straight Ethernet network cable to connect your PC to
one of these ports.
Device Use as a network adapter (future expansion) USB
Host Use to hook a printer to use over the network.
Eth/ADSL Connect this port with a straight Ethernet network cable to
your router if you plan to use Eli behind a router.
WAN
ADSL Connect this port with a telephone cable to your telephone
jack if you plan to replace your DSL modem with Eli.
Port The Power port is where you will connect the power adapter.
Be sure to connect the power cord to the power adapter
before plugging it in.
Power
Switch Power switch to switch on Eli.

Some networking terms explained
WAN – Wide Area Network. A WAN is a network that crosses greater geographical
distances, such as the Internet or a connection to the Internet.
LAN – Local Area Network. A LAN is a geographically confined network, such as a
company network or your network at home.
Front panel
The LED Indicators
Power Green. Comes on when you switch on Eli.
ADSL Green. On when the WAN SW switch on the back panel is set to ADSL.
Off when the WAN SW switch on the back panel is set to Eth.
WAN Green. On when the Standby switch on the back panel is set to on.
Off when the Standby switch on the back panel is set to off.
USB Green. On when one of the USB ports has an active device connected to it.
Link 4 Green. On when Port 4 has an active PC connected to it.
Blinking when data is being transferred over this port.
Link 3 Green. On when Port 3 has an active PC connected to it.
Blinking when data is being transferred over this port.
Link 2 Green. On when Port 2 has an active PC connected to it.
Blinking when data is being transferred over this port.
Link 1 Green. On when Port 1 has an active PC connected to it.
Blinking when data is being transferred over this port.
WLAN Green. On when there is an active WLAN connection.
Blinking when data is being transferred over this port.
Upgrade Green. On when there is an upgrade in progress.
There is no connection to the Internet when an upgrade is in
progress.
Do not switch off Eli while an upgrade is in progress!
If the upgrade light is on for longer than 10 minutes, please call the
helpdesk.

Installing Eli
Eli can be setup in a few easy steps:
1. Connect your PCs to Eli and connect Eli to either your telephone jack or your router.
2. Configure your PCs to connect to Eli by entering the information provided to you by your ISP
to connect to the Internet.
3. Once connected to the Internet, configure your personal security settings for Eli.
1. Hook up Eli.
a) To replace your DSL modem with Eli: ´
i. Make sure the switch WAN SW is set to ADSL.
ii. Connect the RJ-11 telephone cable from your phone jack to the WAN port labeled
ADSL on Eli’s rear panel.
To connect Eli to a cable modem:
i. Make sure the switch WAN SW is set to Eth.
ii. Connect Eli to your cable modem using a straight RJ-45 network cable between the
WAN port labeled Eth/ADSL and to your cable modem.
To connect Eli directly to a router:
iii. Make sure the switch WAN SW is set to Eth.
iv. Connect Eli directly to your router using a straight RJ-45 network cable between the
WAN port labeled Eth/ADSL and to your router.
b) Connect one end of a straight RJ-45 network cable to one of the 4 LAN ports on the back of
Eli and the other end to the network adapter port of your PC.
c) If you want to connect more than one PC, repeat this step for your other PCs. You can
connect up to 4 PCs to the internal switch on Eli.
d) Connect the power adapter to the Power port on the rear panel of Eli, then plug the power
adapter into a power outlet.
e) Switch on Eli.
f) The Power LED on the front panel will light up green as soon as the power is switched on.
Eli’s hardware installation is now complete!
You can now continue by setting up your Internet connection for Eli.

2. Set up your internet connection.
Now that your PCs will connect to the Internet via Eli, Eli will provide them with individual IP
addresses. You will now configure your PCs to accept the IP addresses that Eli will provide.
To use Eli, make sure that a network adapter has been successfully installed in each PC.
These instructions apply only to Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For other operating
systems, please see the manual that came with your system and check for setting up
DHCP.
a) Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
b) Double-click on the Network icon. The following window opens:
Double-click on Local Area Connection.
In the Local Area Connection Status window click on Properties.

c) In the Local Area Connection Properties window select the TCP/IP protocol line,
then click on Properties.
d) In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window make sure that Obtain an
IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are
selected.
Click OK.
e) Click OK in the Local Area Connection Properties window.
Click Close in the Local Area Connection Status window.
Close the Network Connections window.
You have now successfully configured your PC!
If you want to use additional PCs to connect to the Internet with Eli, repeat these steps with
each of the PCs.

3. Configure Eli
Once you have configured your PC to connect to Eli, you can configure your connection to the
Internet.
Please make sure you have your Internet connection information provided by your ISP ready.
You can enter them into the table below for convenience.
First, determine how you need to connect to the Internet. For this, please review the connction
information provided your ISP.
Here are some general guidelines:
If you use a DSL connection, you are most likely connecting to the Internet over
PPPoE.
If you are using a cable modem with Eli, you are most likely using DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol – you are dynamically having an IP address
assigned to you) to connect to the Internet.
If you are using a router to connect to the Internet, you have a set IP address
provided by your ISP.
I connect to the Internet over:
DSL

Eli is connected to a router.
DSL: PPPoE Configuration

Router: set IP address configuration

Default Route
To configure Eli, open your browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar
(Internet Explorer) or location bar (Netscape Navigator).

If you are setting up Eli for the first time, the following screen will appear:
Depending on your type of Internet connection, follow one of the steps outlined below.
a. Using PPPoE with Eli
To enter your PPPoE information, click on enter or change your personal internet access
information.
On the following screen, enter your username and password provided by your ISP. Re-enter
your password to verify.
Click OK.
Click on change the settings of the external interface of your Eli and check if the radio button
PPPoE is selected. If not, click Toggle Mode to select it.
Click OK.

You can now access the Internet using Eli!
b. Using DHCP with Eli
To use DHCP with Eli, click on change the settings of the external interface of your Eli.
On the following screen, make sure that the radio button DHCP is selected. If not, click Toggle
Mode to select it.
Click OK.
You can now access the Internet using Eli!
c. Using a static IP address with Eli
To use a static IP address with Eli, click on change the settings of the external interface of
your Eli.
On the following screen, click on Mode. The mode will change from automatic to manual. You
can now enter your IP address information into the fields IP Address, Network Mask, and
Default Router.
Click OK.
You can now access the Internet using Eli!
You can now use Eli to surf the Internet.
You are protected from attackers on the Internet. However, to take advantage of the additional
features of Eli and enhance your protection and your Internet experience, see the next chapters,
Change the configuration of Eli.

Change the configuration of Eli
To configure Eli, open your browser and enter http://my.trusteli.com into the address bar.
Enter your username and password on the screen.
Once you successfully logged in, you get the following welcome screen.
The menu on the left gives you access to all configuration options for Eli:
General Logout, Change your password.
Router Configure your WLAN and VPN settings.
Email Set up your Virus and Spam protection.
Firewall Choose your security policy.
Parental Control Choose the URL filtering categories you want blocked.
You are now ready to configure Eli.

The menu options in detail
General
In this section you can change your password and log out of my.trusteli.com.
Click on General.
You are now in the General section of your configuration settings.
Logout
To log out, click on Logout. You will be automatically logged out of my.trusteli.com.
Profile
To change your password, click on Profile.
Enter your new password, and retype it. Click on Save.
Your password has been changed to your new password.
Router
In this section you can configure your Wireless LAN (WLAN) options and set up a secure
connection to another Eli over the Internet by creating a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
Click on Router in the menu on the left. The menu will expand to show the following options:
WLAN-Settings and VPN-Settings.
You are now in the router configuration section of your configuration settings.
WLAN-Settings
To configure your Wireless LAN settings, click on WLAN in the menu on the left. The following
screen appears:
To activate your WLAN, check the checkbox Activate Wireless Network.

Then enter an ESSID for your WLAN, essentially giving it a name.
Do not check ESSID-Broadcast if you do not want to broadcast your ESSID.
Choose an encryption level for your WLAN. The WEP Key will be created automatically.
Some additional information on wireless networks
What is an ESSID?
The ESSID (Extended Service Set Identification) is the identifying name of
a wireless network, or the name of your network.
The ESSID is sometimes just called SSID.
When you setup another wireless device that you want to use in your
wireless network, you need to specify your ESSID to make sure it logs into
your network and not any other wireless network that might be available.
Why should I not broadcast my ESSID?
You should consider not using the ESSID broadcast.
This is a function allows the wireless access point to announce its name and
details, making the configuration of clients significantly easier if not
completely automatic; it also makes it less difficult for others to use your
resources.
It is highly recommended that you change the ESSID to something other
than the manufacturer default and to something not predictable like your
street name or number.
What is a WEP Key?
WEP (wired equivalent privacy) is an optional encryption method used in
wireless networks. It is used to encrypt traffic between the nodes in a
wireless network to protect your privacy. You can choose different levels of
encryption. To ensure the highest level of security, we recommend using
WPA (256bit) encryption.
Note: We strongly recommend using encryption in a wireless
network!
If you do not encrypt the traffic in your WLAN, anyone can sniff the traffic
in your network without joining it. He/she can then see all the information
that goes across it, without you even knowing!
When you have finished configuring your wireless network, click Save.
Your settings will be saved to Eli.
You can now configure your wireless clients to use your wireless network.
For instructions on how to configure a Windows XP PC, please see page X in this manual.

VPN-Settings
To configure a VPN between this Eli and another Eli you manage, click on VPN-Settings. The
following screen appears:
To start setting up your VPN, check the checkbox Activate VPN Support.
Then click [Create VPN].
The following screen appears:
Enter a name and a description for your network.
Click Create.

To add another Eli to your VPN, follow these steps:
1. Enter the Customer ID for the other Eli.
2. Enter the Password.
3. Enter a Description for this Eli. The name must not contain any spaces.
4. Click Add.
The Eli is added to your VPN.
Repeat these steps for each Eli you want to add.
When you are done adding Elis to your VPN, click Back.
The following screen appears:
To add more Elis to your VPN, click on [Edit VPN].
To delete your VPN, click on [Delete VPN].
If you click on [Delete VPN], the following screen appears:
Click Delete to proceed or Cancel to cancel.

The following screen appears:
You can now create a new VPN.
Email
In this section you can configure your email protection settings. These include setting up a spam
filter on Eli and configuring Eli to scan your emails and email attachments for viruses.
If a virus is found, Eli will notify you and send you the header of the message. The mail and any
attachments will be deleted.
Click on Email.
The menu expands to show the following options: Spam Protection and Virus Protection.
You are now in the Email section of your configuration settings.
Spam Protection
To configure your spam filter options, click on Spam Protection. The following screen appears:

Choose one of the following options:
Off This setting will deactivate the Spam filter. All spam will be
delivered to your mailbox.
Mark Inserts a header into each spam mail that marks it as spam.
Drop Any spam mail will be automatically deleted.
Bounce Any spam mail will be sent back to the sender.
Forward All spam mail will be forwarded to the email address you specify.
You can then view the mail in this mailbox.
Once you choose an option, click Save. Your settings will be saved.
Virus Protection
With virus protection turned on, all incoming and outgoing email (including attachments) will be
automatically scanned for viruses.
To configure your virus scanning options, click on Virus Protection. The following screen
appears:
Check the checkbox Activate antivirus tool to activate virus scanning on Eli.
Choose one of the following options for attachments larger than 4 MB:
Drop Any message that has an attachment larger than 4 MB will be
rejected.
Pass Any message that has an attachment larger than 4 MB will not be
scanned.
Once you choose an option, click Save. Your settings will be saved.
Firewall
In this section you can configure your firewall policy settings. You have a choice of five policies
that reflect different user needs.
Each policy will open a number of ports on Eli to allow you to access the Internet. You will be
completely hidden behind Eli, invisible to anyone on the Internet who might be looking for a way
to do harm.
All security policies block traffic from entering your private network except for packages sent in
response to a request initiated by you. The policies differ in number and types of services they
allow.

None of the policies permit the implementation of a server behind Eli.
Click on Firewall.
The menu expands to show the following option: System Policies.
You are now in the firewall policy section of your configuration settings.
Choose the policy that reflects your surfing habits.
Tip: If you hover over a policy name, a pop-up with more information will appear.
Simple Surfer Allows surfing the Internet plus sending and receiving
emails. Under most circumstances, this is sufficient for
typical office work.
This is the most secure setting.
Note: Only downloads over HTTP are allowed with this
policy!
Gamer In addition to Simple Surfer, this policy allows most
popular network games and simulations.
Telecommuter In addition to Simple Surfer, this policy allows the use of
VoIP und VPNs from your desktop.
Power User Allows complete access to the World Wide Web, VoIP, Mail,
File-Transfer, VPN, and most popular network games.
All Outbound All ports to the Internet are open.
This is the most insecure setting!
Note: This policy poses a security risk as it allows any
Spyware, Trojans, etc. to send data to the Internet!
Note: The default policy is All Outbound.
Select a policy and click Save. Your settings will be saved.

Parental Control
In this section you can configure your URL filtering settings. You have a choice of 60 different
content categories to which you can block access.
Click on Parental Control.
The menu expands to show the following option: URL Filtering.
You are now in the URL filtering section of your configuration settings.
Select the categories you want to block. When you are done, click Save. Your settings will be
saved.
When you have finished your configuration, click on Logout in the menu on the left You will be
logged out of the configuration system.
Tip: If you don’t see Logout in the menu on the left, click on General to expand the menu.

Setting up a wireless network with Eli
You can use Eli to set up a wireless network at home and give Internet access to wireless
devices in your home.
Configuring Eli as a wireless network access point
Step 1: Configure Eli
For a detailed description of the WLAN configuration on Eli, refer to page X in this manual.
1. Open your browser and enter https://my.trusteli.com in the address bar.
2. Enter your username and password to access the configuration settings.
3. In the menu on the left, select Router and then WLAN-Settings.
4. Check the checkbox Activate Wireless Network, and enter an ESSID, if you want.
5. Choose an encryption level and note the WEP key that Eli creates.
Tip: To note your key electronically so you can easily port it to other PCs,
highlight the key in your browser window, right-click on it and choose Copy in
the context menu.
Open Notepad (click on Start, then choose Accessories, and Notepad)and
choose Edit, Paste to paste the key into Notepad. From here, you can save it
as a text file, and paste it into any form where you need to enter the key.
Configure your wireless PC
The following steps describe how to setup a wireless connection on a Windows XP PC.
For other devices, please check the manual that came with the device.
Make sure that your wireless network adapter is properly configured and active.
1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Network icon. The following window opens:

4. In the ensuing Wireless Network Connection window, select Set up a wireless
network for a home or small office from the left menu.
5. The Wireless Network Wizard window opens.
Click Next.
6. In the next window, select Set up a new wireless network.
Click Next.
7. In the ensuing window, enter the ESSID you entered on your Eli, if you have entered
one. Select Manually assign a network key.
Click Next.

8. In the next window, enter the key that Eli generated for you when you set up the
wireless network on Eli. You can copy and paste it from Notepad if you saved the key
in a text file.
Re-enter the key to make sure that you did not mistype it. You can uncheck the
checkbox Hide characters as I type to make entering the key easier.
Click Next.
9. In the next window, you can choose whether you want to save your configuration to an
USB device or a text file to reuse on another device that you want to connect to your
wireless network.
Choose one option.
Click Next.
10. The ensuing window is the final window of the Wizard.
After saving your configuration, you can close this window.
You have now successfully configured your PC.
Repeat the steps above on all additional PCs that you want to connect to your wireless network.

Safety Information
In order to maintain compliance with the FCC RF exposure guidelines, this equipment should be
installed and operated with minimum distance 20cm between the radiator and your body. Use only with
supplied antenna. Unauthorized antenna, modification, or attachments could damage the transmitter
and may violate FCC regulations.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a class B digital device,
pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
