1. Introduction
WelcometotheZONESCAN800System.
ZONESCAN800isaprofessional,easytouseanalysisanddocumentationtoolfordetectingleaksin
drinkingwaterdistributions.Itconsistsofsmall,intelligentunits(loggers)thataredeployedthroughout
thedistributionnetworkforcollectinganalysisdataandacommunicationunitforinteractivecontrolling
andtransferringthedatatoamobilecomputer(laptop).Thecomponentsprovidepowerfulradio
transmissionabilitiesinordertoallowconvenientoperationfrominsideavehicle.Thesystemcomprises
thefollowingfunctions:
‐Automaticmonitoringandanalyzingofnoisecharacteristics
‐Calculationofleakprobabilitywithopticalandacousticindication
‐Offlinecorrelationofsoundsignalforlocalizingleaks
‐Remotelisteningofleaknoise
ForfurtherdetailsconcerningtheloggersandthecommunicationlinkseealsoSystemComponents.
TheintegratedZONESCAN800Windows™softwareprovideseasytouseoperationoftheradiounits
andpowerfulanalysistoolsofthemeasurementdata.Itsupportsprojectmanagementforeasier
organizationoftheloggersaswellasintegrationofgeographicalmaps.Thesoftwarealsocontains
variousgraphicalandtabulardatadiagnosticstoolsandexportfunctions.
TheWindowssoftwarecanbeoperatedintwomodes:Wizardassistedmodewhichprovidesguided
functionsandiseasytouseorStandardprofessionalmode.Theoperationmodecanbeswitchedinthe
initializationwindow.

1.2. Radiologgers
Theradiologgerscontinuouslymonitorandanalyzenoisecharacteristics.Theloggersneedno
maintenance.Dependingonthesettingofradiooperationperiodandhowoftenthefunctions
CorrelationandRemotelistening(seeLoggerState)areused,batterylifetimenormallyexceeds5
years.Batterymaybereplacedbyauthorizedpersonnelonly.
1.3. SystemCommunicationLink
TheSystemCommunicationLink(abbreviated:CommLink)servesasaninterfaceforradio
communicationbetweencomputerandtheloggers.Itisconnectedtothecomputer‘sserial
interfaceviatheCommunicationCable.WhenconnectedtothecomputertheSystem
CommunicationLinkwillbeautomaticallydetectedassoonastheZONESCAN800softwareis
started.Itisswitchedoffeitherbyexitingthesoftwareordisconnectingitfromthecomputer.
LaterversionCommLinkshaveapushon/offbutton.Dependingonthesurroundingconditions,
radiotransmissiontotheloggersispossibleuptoseveralhundredmetres.

entered.ClickOKandthentoenteranotherlogger,repeattheprocess.TheLoggerPositionandcomment
maybefilledinaftertheLoggershavebeendeployedhoweveritisimportantthattheloggerpositionis

TheStartandStoptime’saswellastheInterval(samplerate)requiresettingtosuityourrequirements,the
besttimeperiodiswhenpressureishighestandconsumptionislowest,ifthisdoesn’thappenthenthe
standardsettingswillremainasinFig.6.ClicktheLoggerSetupIcon.Oncethesesettingsarecompletethen
reducetheradiooperationalwindowdowntotheperiodoftimeforprogramminganddownloadingthe
Loggers,bydoingthisthebatterylifewillbeextended.Fig.7theradiooperationperiodisthetimewhen

8 The Noise Logging Principal
An understanding on how the Zonescan Loggers build the Histogram will help when interpreting the
results. The following section explains how the sampling process works. The tables depict when the
logger takes a noise sample and what the sample is caused by, e.g a passing car or leak. Traffic &
Consumption noise should be ignored. A large number of samples at the quietest level, indicate a
consistant sound that could be a leak which never stops. The Leak is the closest to the loudest,
quietest noise.
