Booklet 3.1 Controls and EquipmentOpening and closing 393KeysKey SetYour vehicle's key set contains:two folding master keys with remote control and a panic buttonone emergency keyone key tag with the key number .two keys for the roof rack (when factory in-stalled) ⇒page 89.Emergency keyThe emergency key fits all the locks in the ve-hicle.We recommend you keep the emergency key separate from the vehicle documents. The emer-gency key should only be used temporarily in the case you have misplaced your genuine key or lost it.To prevent accidents, injuries or possible theft of your vehicle always observe the WARNINGS ⇒Key tagIf you need a replacement key, take your key tag an authorized Volkswagen dealer.The key number is needed to obtain another key, therefore:Always keep the key tag in a safe place.Never leave it in the vehicle.If you sell the vehicle, be sure to give the key tag to the new owner.WARNINGImproper use of vehicle keys can result in se-rious personal injury.Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. The engine can be started and vehicle systems such as the power win-dows can be operated leading to serious per-sonal injury.Never leave children, disabled persons or anyone who cannot help themselves in the ve-hicle. The doors can be locked using the re-mote control key. This could result in people being trapped in the vehicle in an emergency. For example, depending on the time of year, people trapped in the vehicle can be exposed to very high or low temperatures.Never remove the key from steering lock while the vehicle is moving or while it is rolling to a stop. The steering wheel column will lock up and you will not be able to steer or control the vehicle.NoteThe keys with the remote control contain electronic components. Protect these keys from moisture and rough handling.Never leave any vehicle keys inside the ve-hicle. Entry by unauthorized persons could harm the vehicle or your vehicle could be stolen. Always take the keys with you whenever you leave your vehicle.TipsA replacement key can only be made with the key number.The key number identifies the way the key has to be cut and allows the microchip in the key to be programmed to work with the coded elec-tronic immobilizer in your vehicle.A key without the special microchip or with a chip that has not been coded properly will not work with your vehicle, even if it has been cut correctly.Additional remote control keys are available from authorized Volkswagen dealers. The receiver is inside the vehicle. The maximum range of the remote con-trol depends on various conditions. The range is shorter when the batteries are weak ⇒fig. 25.The indicator light in the key fob lights up when-ever buttons ,  or  is pushed and when the battery is getting weak.Locking and unlockingUsing “set-up” in the instrument cluster you can select which door or doors unlock when you use the remote control. Choose the settings you want in the CONVENIENCE menu under DOOR OPENING ⇒page 14.Panic buttonWhen you press the panic button, the horn sounds and the turn signals flash for about 30 seconds. Pressing the panic button again turns them off. Use the panic button only in an emer-gency.Replacing the batteryThe display in the instrument cluster will let you know when your battery in the remote control is getting weak.The battery indicator light in the remote control key flashes green one time when the battery is weak.Your authorized Volkswagen dealer can change the batteries for you.WARNINGImproper use of vehicle keys can result in se-rious personal injury.Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. For example, depending on the time of year, people trapped in the vehicle can be exposed to very high or low temperatures.Heat build-up in the passenger compart-ment and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle can result in temperatures in the ve-hicle that are much higher than the outside temperatures, particularly in summer. Tem-peratures can quickly reach levels that can cause unconsciousness and death, particu-larly to small children.Never remove the key from steering lock while the vehicle is moving  or while it is rolling to a stop. The steering wheel column will lock up and you will not be able to steer or control the vehicle.NoteNever leave any vehicle keys inside the ve-hicle. Entry by unauthorized persons could harm the vehicle or your vehicle could be stolen. Always take the keys with you whenever you leave your vehicle.Unsuitable batteries can damage the remote control key. Replace used batteries with new ones of the same voltage and same size.TipsThe remote control key only works when you are in range of the receiver ⇒page 40, fig. 25 (blue area).When you unlock your vehicle with the re-mote control, you have 30 seconds to open a door or the rear lid. If you do not, the vehicle will automatically relock itself. This safety relock fea-ture prevents you from leaving your vehicle un-locked.If the remote control does not work, it may have to be synchronized again ⇒page 41.If you try to use the remote control several times outside its effective range, the remote con-trol may not work and will have to be reset ⇒page 41.Use the remote control only if you intend to use one of the functions. Since terrain and con-ditions may vary, pressing the remote may un-lock the vehicle or set off the panic function even if you think your are out of range.Resetting the remote control keyThe remote key has to be reset if it does not lock or unlock the vehicle.Resetting the remote control key– Unlock the driver's door manually by inserting the key in the door lock.– Switch on the ignition.TipsThe remote control key will have to be reset if you press the button   several times outside its effective range and the vehicle can no longer be locked or unlocked using the remote.WARNING (continued)0document_0900398f80c7989a.book  Seite 41  Mittwoch, 26.
