Key Set
Your vehicle's key set contains:
two folding master keys with remote control
and a panic button
one emergency key
one key tag with the key number .
two keys for the roof rack (when factory in-
stalled) page 89.
Emergency key
The emergency key fits all the locks in the ve-
hicle.
We recommend you keep the emergency key
separate from the vehicle documents. The emer-
gency key should only be used temporarily in
the case you have misplaced your genuine key or
lost it.
To prevent accidents, injuries or possible theft of
your vehicle always observe the WARNINGS
Key tag
If you need a replacement key, take your key tag
an authorized Volkswagen dealer.
The key number is needed to obtain another key,
therefore:
Always keep the key tag in a safe place.
Never leave it in the vehicle.
If you sell the vehicle, be sure to give the key tag
to the new owner.
WARNING
Improper use of vehicle keys can result in se-
rious personal injury.
Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle. The engine can be started
and vehicle systems such as the power win-
dows can be operated leading to serious per-
sonal injury.
Never leave children, disabled persons or
anyone who cannot help themselves in the ve-
hicle. The doors can be locked using the re-
mote control key. This could result in people
being trapped in the vehicle in an emergency.
For example, depending on the time of year,
people trapped in the vehicle can be exposed
to very high or low temperatures.
Never remove the key from steering lock
while the vehicle is moving or while it is rolling
to a stop. The steering wheel column will lock
up and you will not be able to steer or control
the vehicle.
Note
The keys with the remote control contain
electronic components. Protect these keys from
moisture and rough handling.
Never leave any vehicle keys inside the ve-
hicle. Entry by unauthorized persons could
harm the vehicle or your vehicle could be stolen.
Always take the keys with you whenever you
leave your vehicle.
Tips
A replacement key can only be made with the
key number.
The key number identifies the way the key
has to be cut and allows the microchip in the key
to be programmed to work with the coded elec-
tronic immobilizer in your vehicle.
A key without the special microchip or with a
chip that has not been coded properly will not
work with your vehicle, even if it has been cut
correctly.
Additional remote control keys are available
from authorized Volkswagen dealers. Each key
must be programmed to work with your vehicle
page 41.
You can use up to eight remote control keys
with your vehicle.

Heat build-up in the passenger compart-
ment and luggage compartment of a parked
vehicle can result in temperatures in the ve-
hicle that are much higher than the outside
temperatures, particularly in summer. Tem-
peratures can quickly reach levels that can
cause unconsciousness and death, particu-
larly to small children.
Never remove the key from steering lock
while the vehicle is moving or while it is rolling
to a stop. The steering wheel column will lock
up and you will not be able to steer or control
the vehicle.
Note
Never leave any vehicle keys inside the ve-
hicle. Entry by unauthorized persons could
harm the vehicle or your vehicle could be stolen.
Always take the keys with you whenever you
leave your vehicle.
Unsuitable batteries can damage the remote
control key. Replace used batteries with new
ones of the same voltage and same size.
Tips
The remote control key only works when you
are in range of the receiver page 40, fig. 25
(blue area).
When you unlock your vehicle with the re-
mote control, you have 30 seconds to open a
door or the rear lid. If you do not, the vehicle will
automatically relock itself. This safety relock fea-
ture prevents you from leaving your vehicle un-
locked.
If the remote control does not work, it may
have to be synchronized again page 41.
If you try to use the remote control several
times outside its effective range, the remote con-
trol may not work and will have to be reset
page 41.
Use the remote control only if you intend to
use one of the functions. Since terrain and con-
ditions may vary, pressing the remote may un-
lock the vehicle or set off the panic function even
if you think your are out of range.
Resetting the remote control key
The remote key has to be reset if it does not lock or unlock the vehicle.
Resetting the remote control key
Unlock the driver's door manually by
inserting the key in the door lock.
Switch on the ignition.
Tips
The remote control key will have to be reset if
you press the button several times outside its
effective range and the vehicle can no longer be
locked or unlocked using the remote.
