Follow these steps to use either the standard infrared driver or the enhanced driver. 1. Reboot your computer. 2. When you see the HP logo, press F2. 3. Select Advanced. 4. Set IrDA port setting to Enabled. 5. Set Mode to FIR. 6. If DMA channel conflicts with Parallel port DMA channel, change Parallel port Mode to EPP. 7. Select F10 to save the changed values and continue reboot. 8. Adjust the infrared transceiver value. a. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network. b. On the Configuration tab, select NSC-PC87338 Fast Infrared Port and click Properties. c. Select the Advanced tab. d. Under Property select Infrared Transceiver A, under Value select HP-HSDL-2300, and click OK twice. e. Reboot the computer again. _______________________ Updating the infrared driver If you wish, you can upgrade your existing infrared port driver to an enhanced driver. A standard infrared driver is installed automatically with Windows 98, but the enhanced driver provides faster performance, facilitating large data transfers. 1. Remove the installed device. a. Right-click My Computer, select Properties, and click Device Manager tab. b. Select "View devices by type." c. Click Infrared devices, select Infrared Communication Device, and click Remove. 2. Update the infrared driver. a. See that you are still on the Device Manager tab and that "View devices by type" is selected. b. Click Network Adapters, select IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port, and click Properties. c. Click Driver tab, and click Update Driver. d. On the Update Device Driver Wizard, click Next. e. Select "Display a list of all the drivers. . . ." and click Next. f. Select "Show all devices." g. Under Manufacturers select National Semiconductor, under Network Adapters select NSC-PC87338 Fast Infrared Port, and click OK. h. Click Next, wait for installation, click Finish, and reboot the computer. The enhanced driver is now installed and ready to use, if you have already enabled the infrared port. _________________________________ Installing the supplemental video driver The standard video drivers installed on your OmniBook XE provide for various settings of screen area and colors, as well as for screen zoom capabilities. If you wish to use additional video features such as Stretch and Rotate, you can install a supplemental video driver. 1. In Windows Explorer, open the folder c:\omnibook\drivers\video\control. 2. Double-click Setup. 3. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display. 4. Select the Settings tab, choose either High Color (16 bit) or True Color (24 bit), and click OK. Do not select 256 colors, since the background is sometimes distorted. After you have installed the supplemental video driver, you have available a video control panel. To use the control panel: 1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display. 2. Select the LynxE tab and use the controls available there for additional features, such as Stretch and Rotate. For additional information about the control panel, see the Tips and Troubleshooting section on the Web at www.hp.com/omnibook. ____________________________________________ Expanding the hibernate partition when adding RAM The OmniBook XE comes with either 32 or 64 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM) installed, and the size of the Hibernate partition is set appropriately. You can add up to 128 MB of additional RAM without changing the size of the Hibernate partition. However, if you add more than 128 MB of additional RAM, so that your total RAM is greater than 192 MB, you must change the size of the Hibernate partition. This partition is automatically used to save your current session from RAM when battery level is low. As a result, you must provide a sufficiently large Hibernate partition to accommodate all the information stored in RAM; otherwise, you risk losing work in progress. You can expand the Hibernate partition by booting from the Recovery CD. This process will reformat the hard disk, so be sure to back up your data first. 1. Back up all data from your hard disk. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the OmniBook. 3. Insert the bootable Recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive. 4. Reboot and, when you see the HP logo, press ESC twice. 5. Select the CD-ROM drive as the boot device, press ENTER, and follow the onscreen instructions. 6. When prompted, select Create Hibernate Partition. Accept the recommended Hibernate partition size. The size is calculated automatically based on your total RAM; for example, if you use two 128 MB memory cards, it is 256 MB. The Hibernate partition is never smaller than 192 MB. You can find more details about recovering the factory installation of Windows on the Recovery CD: the file readme.txt is in the CD's root directory. The recovery process can take up to an hour. Do not interrupt the process or unplug the AC adapter until the process is completed. The file system for Windows 95 and for Windows 98 is FAT32. Do not interrupt the process or unplug the ac adapter until the process is completed. ________________________________________ Using hot key features on an external keyboard When you are using an external keyboard, you can simulate the use of the OmniBook function key (Fn) for some features if you press and hold Ctrl+Alt. Switches among built-in display, external display, and simultaneous displays. Toggles Scroll Lock on and off. Other function key features are not available on an external keyboard. _____________________________________ Using digitally signed drivers in Windows 98 If you have chosen to enable driver signing in Windows 98, you may need to obtain updated drivers for your OmniBook. During installation, Windows 98 expects each driver file to include a digital signature file (with a .cat extension) when driver signing is enabled. Since some files may not have been available at the time your OmniBook was manufactured, it is possible that you will see a message prompting you for a digital signature file. If so, you need to obtain updated drivers, and they will be posted on the Web at www.hp.com/omnibook. Most users, however, choose to use the default Windows 98 configuration, which disables driver signing. In that case, you can ignore any messages prompting you for a digital signature file (with a .cat extension) during installation. The drivers will function correctly without these files, so you can skip their installation. _________________________________________ Reestablishing network connection after resume When you are using a network PC card, it is possible that you will lose network connection after a Resume operation. If this occurs: 1. Stop the network PC card. a. Double-click on the PC card icon in the lower right of your screen. b. In PC Card Properties, select your network card. c. Click Stop. 2. Remove the PC card. 3. Insert the PC card again to reestablish network connection. _________________________________________ Misreporting hard disk space during registration During the online registration process, you may see an incorrect amount of available space reported for your hard disk; for example, 2.0 GB rather than the accurate 4.0 GB. Ignore this misreporting and continue with registration. Hard disk space is reported correctly in programs other than online registration. ______________________________________________________ Maintaining use of automated power management in Windows 98 When Windows 98 detects that your Automated Power Management (APM) system is not operating properly, it may ask you whether you would like to disable APM. Answer No to ensure longer battery use. In some cases, Windows 98 will automatically disable APM. Check the Web at search.microsoft.com/default.asp for instructions and further information about this Windows 98 feature. On this page, enter Q188134, select Support & the Knowledge Base as your search category, and click Search Now. When the search is complete, click on the article entitled "Standby Missing from Windows Shutdown Dialog Box." ___________________________ Losing sound in MS-DOS mode When you are operating your OmniBook XE in MS-DOS mode (for example, when running MSDOS games) you may find that the sound does not operate properly. Use Windows applications for full use of sound capabilities. _________________________________ Resuming after low-battery hibernation When the system hibernates as a result of a critically low battery, you will find when resuming that all your data has been saved but that some functions may be disabled. To resume normal operation, restore power (by connecting ac power or installing a charged battery), perform a full shutdown, and then restart the computer. ______________________ Checking the build version When you communicate with an HP Support person, you may need to find out what version of the software is installed on your OmniBook XE. You can find information about the build in the file version.inf, which is found in the root directory of your hard disk. (The file is also on the Recovery CD, in the \recover directory.) Double-click on the filename to see the information. ________________________________________ Setting the OmniBook modem connection speed This OmniBook XE is shipped from the factory with the built-in modem speed set at 28.8K (V.34). When connecting to certain 28.8K modem models, the OmniBook modem set at 56K (V.90) speed may not reliably step down from its maximum setting of 56K to establish the connection. This is especially noticeable when trying to register the OmniBook XE in Europe, because most registration points in Europe use 28.8K modems. The 28.8K setting ensures a valid speed match when connecting to a 28.8K or 56K host modem. To enable 56K as the maximum connection speed: 1. Verify that the host modem supports a 56K (V.90) connection speed. 2. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modem, Properties, Connection, Advanced. 3. Delete AT+MS=11,0 from the Extra settings field, then click OK. To restore 28.8K as the maximum connection speed (default setting): 1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modem, Properties, Connection, Advanced. 2. Insert AT+MS=11,0 into the Extra settings field, then click OK. Note: This configures the modem to connect always at a speed of 28.8K, even when connecting to 56K modems. _____________________________________ Finding Windows drivers for your OmniBook Hewlett-Packard supports three operating systems (OSs) on the OmniBook XE (Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0) and your computer was shipped with one of these OSs. If you decide to install one of the other OSs instead, be sure to download the latest drivers for it from the web at www.hp.com/omnibook. You can also check this OmniBook website for updated drivers for your original OS. ____________________________________________ Enabling pulse dialing in France, Belgium, and Spain If your OmniBook XE was purchased in France, Belgium, or Spain, the Loop Disconnect feature (pulse dialing) may be disabled for your modem. National certifications for Loop Disconnect are expected to be completed soon, and you can then use pulse dialing rather than default tone dialing. When pulse dialing is available, you will find instructions about enabling this feature on the Web at www.hp.com/omnibook.
