This third party application provides users with an industry leading data/fax solution to take advantage of features of the integrated modem or third party PC Card modem. The purpose of this White Paper is to provide additional information on the features and benefits of RingCentral Fax. RingCentral Fax is designed to meet Compaq customer requirements for a complete software faxing solution to complement the fax capabilities of their integrated or PC Card modem. RingCentral Fax sports an easy to use interface design that emphasizes function over form. Easy access to essential features without cluttering the desktop designed with the commercial notebook user in mind. 000000000Figure 1 shows the main RingCentral Fax user interface. Figure 1 - RingCentral Fax User Interface RingCentral Fax includes an installation wizard, providing automated installation of all directories and files automatically setup when the computer is first setup with the Compaq factory pre-install. Auto-detection of the modem, COM port, and communication capabilities makes it easy to get started quickly. A complete manual is provided on-line, as well as on-line context sensitive help. F E AT U R E S AT A G L AN C E Features at a glance include: • Send faxes directly from any Windows application via standard Print-to-fax drivers. • Easily create and send short one-page memos with a couple of mouse-clicks. • Send faxes by dragging a document directly from Windows desktop or folders. • View on-screen animation of fax progress, or enable background operation to avoid being interrupted. • View logs that record sent and received fax information including time, date, fax number and page count. • Use the MAPI-compatible, built-in address book to keep contact information and enable group faxing. S U P P O R T E D P L AT F O R M S & O P E R AT I N G S Y S T E M S RingCentral Fax is being shipped on Armada 7800, 7400and 1700 notebooks pre-installed with either Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 98. The rationale for not providing the application with Windows 95 is that this operating system includes a Microsoft fax client as part of the operating system. This optional operating system component allows users to take advantage of the fax capabilities of their integrated or PC Card modem through the Microsoft Exchange e-mail client interface. Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 do not ship with native fax capabilities creating an opportunity for Compaq to provide additional value through software. No, RingCentral Fax will only be pre-installed on Armada notebooks manufactured after September 1998 with Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 98 as the pre-installed operating system. Armada notebooks pre-installed with Windows NT 4.0 manufactured prior to January 1998 included an application from Trio Communications called the Trio Communications Suite providing a set of features similar to RingCentral Fax. Trio Communications was removed from the standard Windows NT 4.0 pre-install by Compaq since, as a 16-bit application, did not meet Microsoft certification requirements. Can RingCentral Fax be downloaded from the Compaq web site? RingCentral Fax is pre-installed and included as part of the Compaq Quick Restore CD. It cannot be downloaded from the Compaq web site due to licensing restrictions. It can be provided via fulfillment for customers of the Armada 7800, 7400, 1700, 1500 and Armada SB whose preinstalled operating system is either Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0. Why is RingCentral Fax not pre-installed on Armada notebooks with Windows 95? Windows 95 includes a Microsoft fax client as part of the operating system. This client application is used in conjunction with the Microsoft Exchange e-mail interface to provide fax capabilities where supported by the integrated or PC Card modem.
