Setting up HTC One J for the first timeWhen you switch on HTC One J for the first time, you’ll be asked to set it up.Just follow the onscreen instructions and you’ll be up and running in no time. Some features that need to connect to the Internet such as location-based servicesand auto-sync of your online accounts may incur extra data fees. Don’t worry. Youcan enable or disable them in settings later on.When HTC One J has started, you'll see Quick Tips on some screens (such as theHome screen) that will guide you in using HTC One J. Your first week with yournew phoneHome screenYour Home screen is where you make HTC One J your own. You can add yourfavorite applications, shortcuts, folders and widgets so they’re always just a tap away.To find out how, see Personalizing on page 23.Extended Home screenAs you start to do more things with HTC One J, you might find that one Home screenis not enough. No problem.Slide your finger horizontally to the left or right on the screen and you’ll discover morespace for adding icons, widgets, and more.Press   to return to the main Home screen.Using Leap view§To jump straight to the screen that you want, press   or pinch the screen toshow the Leap view. It reveals all Home screens as thumbnails. Just tap the oneyou want and you’ll leap right there.§In Leap view, if there's space to add a new screen, you can tap Add panel to doso. Finger gesturesTap When you want to type using the keyboard, select items onscreensuch as application and settings icons, or press onscreen buttons,simply tap them with your finger. Press andholdTo open the available options for an item (for example, a contact orlink in a web page), simply press and hold the item. Swipe orslideTo swipe or slide means to quickly drag your finger vertically orhorizontally across the screen. Drag Press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start todrag. While dragging, do not release your finger until you havereached the target position. Flick Flicking the screen is similar to swiping, except that you need to swipeyour finger in light, quicker strokes. This finger gesture is always in avertical direction, such as when flicking the contacts or message list. Rotate For most screens, you can automatically change the screen orientationfrom portrait to landscape by turning HTC One J sideways. Whenentering text, you can turn HTC One J sideways to bring up a biggerkeyboard. Pinch In some apps, like Gallery or the web browser, you can “pinch” thescreen using two fingers (for example, thumb and index finger) tozoom in or zoom out when viewing a picture or a web page. Two-fingerscrollingIn some apps that have sorting, like Mail or People, you can use twofingers to scroll the screen. The screen displays the sorting order, andyou can easily scroll to the information you want.Sleep modeSleep mode saves battery power by putting HTC One J into a low power state whilethe display is off. It also stops accidental button presses when HTC One J is in yourbag. You’ll still receive messages and calls though, and missed calls and messagesappear on the lock screen.To prevent missed calls or messages from appearing on the lock screen, slide theNotifications panel open, and then tap   > Privacy.Switching to Sleep modeBriefly press the POWER button to turn off the display and switch to Sleep mode.HTC One J also automatically goes into Sleep mode when it’s idle for a while.11 Your first week with your new phoneConfidential for Certification use Confidential for Certification use Confidential for Certification use
Waking up from Sleep modeTo wake HTC One J up manually, press the POWER button. You’ll need to unlock thescreen.HTC One J automatically wakes up when you have an incoming call.Unlocking the screenPull the ring up to unlock the screen. If you have set up a screen unlock pattern, pin, or password, you will be asked todraw the pattern on the screen or enter the PIN or password before it unlocks.If you've set an event reminder or an alarm, you can drag   or   to the ring tosnooze or dismiss the event or alarm.Opening an app from the lock screen§On the lock screen, drag an app icon to the ring to unlock the screen anddirectly go to the app. The shortcuts on the lock screen are the same apps as the ones on your Homescreen's launch bar. Ways of getting contacts into HTC One JThere are several ways you can add contacts to HTC One J. You can sync HTC One Jwith contacts from your Google® Account, computer, Facebook®, and more.Gmail™Google contacts are imported to HTC One J after you sign in toyour Google Account. You can also create more Google contactsright from HTC One J.Facebook Log in to your Facebook account to import your Facebookfriends' contact information.Phone contacts You can choose to create and store contacts directly inHTC One J or transfer existing ones from your old phone.SIM card Copy all your SIM contacts to HTC One J.Microsoft®ExchangeActiveSync®HTC One J syncs your work contacts from the MicrosoftExchange ActiveSync Server in your workplace.Transfer Use the Transfer app to transfer not only your contacts, but alsocalendar events and text messages from your old phone toHTC One J.Transferring contacts from your old phoneEasily transfer contacts from your old phone to HTC One J through Bluetooth®.Depending on your old phone’s model, you may also transfer other types of data suchas calendar events and text messages to HTC One J.1. Adjusting the volumeAdjusting the ringer volume§Press the VOLUME buttons to adjust the ringer. The Ringtone volume windowappears on the screen to display the volume levels.§While in the lowest ringer volume level (Silent mode), press VOLUME DOWNonce to switch to Vibrate mode. The vibrate mode icon   appears in the statusbar.§While in Vibrate mode, press VOLUME UP once to switch to silent mode. Thespeaker mute icon   displays in the status bar.Adjusting the earpiece volume for callsDuring a call, press the VOLUME buttons.Adjusting the media volumeWhen playing music or watching video, press the VOLUME buttons to adjust thevolume. Copying and sharing textIn apps such as the web browser and Mail, you can select and copy text, and thenpaste or share it.Selecting text1. Press and hold on a word.2. Drag the start and end markers to highlight the surrounding text you want toselect. To copy the address of a linked webpage, press and hold the link, and then tapCopy link URL.Copying and pasting text1. After you have selected the text you want to copy, tap Copy. The selected text is then copied to the clipboard.2. In a text entry field (for example while composing an email), press and hold atthe point where you want to paste the text.3. Tap Paste.Sharing text1. After you have selected the text you want to share, tap Share.2. Switching between recently opened appsYou can easily access apps you've just recently opened.1. Press  .2. Slide your finger left or right to see recently-opened apps. 3. Notifications panelWhen you get a new notification, you can open the Notifications panel to see whatevent notification or new information you've received. The Notifications panel also letsyou quickly access settings.1. To open the Notifications panel, press and hold the status bar, then slide yourfinger downward. If you have several notifications, scroll down the screen to see them all.2. To close the Notifications panel, press and hold the bottom bar of the panel,then slide your finger up. Or just press  .Getting to know your settingsWant to change the ringtone, set up a Wi-Fi® connection or make the screen brighter?Do this and more in Settings.Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap  . Getting the battery to last longerHow long the battery can last before it needs recharging depends on how you useHTC One J. The features and accessories you use can affect battery life.You can get the battery to last longer by following a few simple tips:§Turn off the display when you're not using it§Lower the volume§Close battery-intensive programs, such as the Camera, when you're done usingthem§Make sure apps are closed and not continuously running in the background§Use the power adapter whenever possibleYou can get HTC One J to help you conserve power automatically in the Powersettings.Optimizing battery lifeYou can set HTC One J to automatically switch to power saver mode when thebattery level reaches a certain level.1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap  .2. Tap Power.3. Tap Save power automatically and choose how much battery power remainsbefore switching to power saver mode.4. Tap Save power settings and choose which settings to adjust or turn off whenpower saver is on.If you want power saver mode to be on all the time, select the Save power option.Updating the HTC One J softwareHTC One J can check and notify you if there’s a new software update available. Youcan then download and install the software update using the Wi-Fi or dataconnection. You can also manually check if there's an available software update.Depending on the type of update, the update may erase all your personal data andcustomized settings, and also remove any applications you’ve installed. Installing an updateWhen the Internet connection is on and there's a new update available, the systemupdate dialog box appears and guides you through the process. If you don't see thedialog box, check for the update notification icon   in the status bar.1. Slide open the Notifications panel, and then tap the update notification.2. In the system update dialog box, choose what type of connection to use fordownloading the update.3. Follow the onscreen prompts to start the download.4. After the download is complete, tap Install now and then tap OK in the Installsystem software update dialog box.Wait for the update to finish. CameraCamera basicsEnjoy taking photos and videos of your trips and everyday surprises with HTC One J.To open the camera, tap   from the Home screen, and then tap Camera. If the screen is locked, just drag the Camera app icon to the Lock screen ring soyou can take photos and videos right away.You'll find onscreen controls to add effects, zoom in or out of your subject, and moreon the Viewfinder screen.Before capturingZoomingBefore taking a photo or video, you can first use the onscreen zoom bar to zoom in orout of your subject.Simply slide your finger on the zoom bar to zoom in or out.When you're recording video, the zoom bar is always onscreen. Taking a photo while recording a videoWhile you're recording video using the rear camera, tap   to capture a still shot ofyour subject.Changing camera and video settings1. Personalize it with adifferent wallpaper, skin, ringtone, and notification sound for events such as incomingtext, email, and calendar reminders.Personalizing HTC One J with scenesHTC One J becomes multiple phones in one when you use scenes. Scenes arepersonalized Home screen layouts that you can quickly apply. By switching betweenscenes, you instantly turn HTC One J into your perfect weekend phone, travel phone,work phone, or pure play phone.Everytime you add or modify something on the Home screen, HTC One Jautomatically saves your changes to the current scene selected.Using a preset sceneHTC One J features preset scenes, each preconfigured with a different wallpaper andcollection of widgets that reflect different moments in your life. Changing the settings of a widgetYou can modify basic settings of some widgets (for example, the People and Mailwidgets) from the Home screen.1. Rearranging or removing widgets and icons onyour Home screenMoving a widget or icon1. Press and hold the widget or icon you want to move.2. Drag the widget or icon to a new location on the screen. §You can pause at the left or right edge of the screen to drag the widget or icononto another Home screen panel.§When you drag a widget to a spot that’s already occupied by another widget oricon, the occupant automatically moves away to give room.3. When the widget or icon is where you want it, lift your finger.Removing a widget or icon1. Press and hold the widget or icon you want to remove, and then drag it to  .2. When the widget or icon turns red, lift your finger.Personalizing the launch barThe launch bar on your Home screen gives you one-touch access to commonly usedapps. Grouping apps into a folderUse folders to group apps on the launch bar or your Home screen to free up space soyou can add more apps.1. Press and hold an app, and then drag it over to another app to automaticallycreate a folder. 2. Tap the folder to open it.3. Tap  .4. Select one or more apps that you want to add to the folder.5. Tap Add.You can also add shortcuts to settings or information. Add a shortcut first to theHome screen, and then drag it over to the folder.Renaming a folder1. Tap the folder to open it.2. Rearranging the Home screenReorder your Home screen panels in any way that fits how you use them. Forexample, move the panels with frequently-used widgets, shortcuts, and folders closerto the main Home screen.1. Pinch the Home screen to show the Leap view.2. Press and hold the thumbnail of the home screen you want to move. HTC One Jthen vibrates. Don’t lift your finger just yet.3. Drag the thumbnail to its new position, and then lift your finger. Removing a Home screen panelIf you feel you need fewer Home screens, you can remove some.1. On the Home screen, pinch the touch screen or press   to go to Leap view.2. Press and hold the panel you want to remove. Don't lift your finger just yet.3. Personalizing with sound setsEach sound set gives you a different combination of sounds for your ringtone andnotifications such as incoming messages, email, calendar event reminders, and more.By switching between sound sets, you can instantly make HTC One J ring or alert youwith fun sounds when you're out with friends or change to subtle sounds while you'reat work.Choosing a preset sound set1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap   > Personalize.2. On the Sound tab, tap Sound set.3. On the Sound sets screen, tap a sound set name.4. You can tap   to listen to the different sounds for that sound set.5. Tap Apply.Creating a sound set1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap   > Personalize.2. On the Sound tab, tap Sound set.3. On the Sound sets screen, tap  .4. Enter a new sound set name, and then tap Done.The newly created sound set is then added to the list of sound sets. Open an app that has the usual tabs at the bottom of its screen.2. Press and hold the current tab until the screen changes and shows a messageabout rearranging tabs. If you don't see any tabs on the app, tap   > Edit tabs.3. You can:§Change the order of the tabs. Press and hold a tab, and then drag it to itsnew position.§Drag a tab into or out of the bottom row to add or remove it.4. Phone callsMaking a call with Smart dialYou can either dial a number directly, or use Smart dial to quickly place a call.
