OPERATION Solar Powered Motion Sensor Light Mode: On-Time: Test Auto 5 Sec. 30 Sec. x Night x x Note: When first turned on wait about 1 minute for the circuitry to calibrate. TEST Model SL-7001 Put the sensor switch in the TEST position. Features • • • • Works: Day Turns on light when motion is detected. Automatically turns light off. Photocell keeps the light off during daylight hours. Battery Protection Circuitry. Protects against excessive overcharge and undercharge. This package includes: TEST OFF AUTO AUTO TEST Put the sensor switch in the AUTO position. Light OFF AUTO INSTALLATION Battery Case For best performance, mount the fixture about 8 feet (2.4 m) above the ground. Solar Panel Sensor Light 5 Mounting Screws (2 sizes) Requirements Three Mounting Holes for Solar Panel Base ❒ • Do not turn the light on before the battery is fully charged. Charge the battery by keeping the switch in the OFF position and the solar collector pointed directly at the noon sun for 3 sunny days. If not fully charged, the unit will not work. • When FULLY charged, the solar light will operate a maximum of 15 days without sunlight. Actual operating time will vary depending upon how frequently the light is triggered. Mount Solar Panel Base on a solid surface using three tapered screws. Adjust the panel to point directly at the noon sun. Avoid obstructions such as trees or buildings that may block sun light. Allow for enough wire to reach the case. Keep ball joint at bottom. Note: You will want to re-aim the solar panel as the seasons change to keep it pointed directly at the noon sun. 3 3/4" ❒ © 2003 DESA Specialty Products™ Mount the Battery Case on a solid surface using two round-head screws and the keyholes on the back of the case. 595-5291-04 For proper operation, the sensor head must be rotated face down as shown in the next two steps. ❒ AIMING THE SENSOR. ❒ Loosen the clamp screw in Clamp the sensor ball joint. If the light is not needed, put the switch in the OFF position. Rotate the sensor head towards the clamp screw joint. Control Switch Joint Clamp ❒ ❒ Then rotate the sensor head clockwise 180° so the controls face down. Plug the solar panel cable into the bottom of the battery case. Allow the battery to charge with three days of sunshine before testing. Avoid aiming the control at: • Objects that change temperature rapidly, such as heating vents and air conditioners. These heat sources could cause false triggering. • Areas where pets or traffic may trigger the control. • Nearby large, light-colored objects reflecting light may trigger the shut-off feature. Do not point other lights at the sensor. TEST AND ADJUSTMENT ❒ ❒ Slide the sensor switch to the TEST (center) position. Place the SENSITIVITY adjustment in the minimum (counterclockwise) position. SENSITIVITY TEST OFF AUTO 100° 8 ft. (2.4 m) Bottom of Sensor NOTE: Sensor has a 1 minute warm up period before it will detect motion. When switching modes wait 1 minute. 50 ft. (15.2 m) Maximum Range Maximum Coverage Angle The detector is less sensitive to motion directly towards it and more sensitive to across motion. Motion Motion Sensor Least Sensitive 2 Most Sensitive 595-5291-04 THINGS TO REMEMBER: SPECIFICATIONS • Periodically clean the solar panel with a soft cloth and warm water. Do not hose spray. Keep the collector clear of snow and leaves. Make sure trees and other objects do not block sunlight from the panel. • If not to be used for several weeks, turn the unit OFF. Store it with the panel connected and where the panel can gather sunlight. • Solar collection is only effective in direct sunlight. Every hour the light is on requires a minimum of 16 hours of sunlight charging. Solar panels collect less than 10% of the sun’s energy. Light bulbs convert this energy to light at 5% efficiency. • Several days of use with overcast skies may discharge the battery. Because of the battery protection circuit, the light will not work until the battery is fully recharged. • This light is supplied with a 15 watt bulb. Using a larger bulb will decrease battery life. TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE Lights will not come on. 1. Battery is dead (Switch the sensor OFF and let the battery charge for three or more sunny days before using again). 2. Sensor is turned OFF. 3. Lamp is loose or burned out. 4. Daylight turn-off is in effect (recheck after dark). 5. Incorrect aiming (Re-aim the sensor to cover desired area). Lights stay on continuously. 1. Light Control is pointed toward a heat source like an air vent, dryer vent, or brightly-colored heat-reflective surface (Reposition sensor). 2. Light Control is in Test Mode (Switch to Auto). Lights flash on and off. 1. Heat or light from the lamp may be turning the Light Control on and off (Reposition the lamps away from the sensor). 2. Heat being reflected from other objects may be affecting the sensor (Reposition sensor). 3. Light Control is in the Test mode and warming up (Flashing is normal under these conditions). 4. Battery is almost dead (Reduce sensitivity. If flashing continues, switch the sensor OFF and let the battery charge for three or more sunny days before using again). Lights come on in daylight. 1. Light Control may be installed in a relatively dark location. 2. Light Control is in Test (Set control switch to AUTO position). Lights come on for no apparent reason. 1. Light Control may be sensing small animals or automobile traffic (reaim sensor). 2.
