3 Using the WS311 Through the Ethernet interface, you can connect the WS311 to various devices such as IP STBs and computers. After being connected, the devices can be wirelessly connected to the wireless network in your home. The following sections take an IP STB and a computer as examples to describe how to connect the devices and how to use the WS311 respectively . Connecting an IP STB to a Wireless Network Suppose that a wireless router supporting the WPS function has been installed in your home, and an IP STB used for watching Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) programs is newly placed. The IP STB needs to be connected to a network through the wireless router, but it is some distance from the wireless router. Therefore, the layout of the network cables used for connecting the devices will be troublesome. In this case, you can use the WS311 to connect the IP STB to the wireless router wirelessly, which eliminates the trouble of cable layout. Requirements on network and IP STB configurations vary with different IPTV service providers. This section describes how to connect and configure the WS311 by supposing that the IP STB accesses the wireless network through the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) dial-up mode. Step 1 Configure the wireless router: Set the wide area network (WAN) interface of the wireless router to the bridging mode, and ensure that the wireless network function and the WPS function implemented through the Push Button Configuration (PBC) method are enabled. The method for configuring a router varies with the routers produced by different manufacturers. For details about the configuration method, see the wireless router user guide provided by the manufacturer. Step 2 Connect the WS311 to the IP STB and the power socket as shown in the following figure. Connect the LAN interface of the WS311 to the Ethernet interface of the IP STB by using a network cable. Connect the POWER interface of the WS311 to the power socket by using a power adapter. 10

The position of the Ethernet interface on the IP STB as shown in the preceding figure is provided only for your reference. Step 3 Power on the WS311. After the power adapter connected to the WS311 is supplied with power, the WS311 is powered on and the power indicator on the panel turns on. Wait for a moment (less than one minute). When the status indicator turns on, it indicates that the WS311 is started normally. Step 4 Press the WPS button of the wireless router. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button of the WS311 for over 2s, and then release it. At this time, the wireless network indicator of the WS311 blinks in orange, indicating that the WS311 is trying to connect to the wireless router through the WPS function. Wait for a moment (generally about 10s and less than 120s). When the wireless network indicator of the WS311 turns solid orange, it indicates that the WS311 successfully connects to the wireless router through the wireless network. The wireless network indictor keeps on in solid orange for 300s.After 300s, it turns green. If the wireless network indictor turns off after blinking in orange, it indicates that the WS311 cannot connect to a wireless network. For the solution, see section 5 "FAQs." 11
Step 5 Set the IP STB to access the network through the PPPoE dial-up mode. Connecting a Computer to a Wireless Network Suppose that a wireless router supporting the WPS function has been installed in your home, and you want your computer to access the network wirelessly. In this case, you can also use the WS311 to implement the wireless connection. This section describes how to connect and configure the WS311 by supposing that the computer accesses the wireless network by using the routing function of the wireless router. Step 1 Configure the wireless router. 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. Set the WAN interface to access the network by using the PPPoE dial-up mode. Enable the routing and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) functions. Enable the wireless network function and enable the WPS function implemented through the PBC method. Step 2 Connect the WS311. Connect the LAN interface of the WS311 to the Ethernet interface of the computer by using a network cable. Connect the POWER interface of the WS311 to the power socket by using a power adapter. Step 3 Power on the WS311. Step 4 Press the WPS button of the wireless router. 5 FAQs How can I quickly restore the default settings of the WS311? When the WS311 is powered on, press and hold the RESET button of the WS311 for over 6s, and then release it. Then the WS311 automatically restarts and the default settings are restored. Does the WPS function have any special requirement on the wireless encryption settings of the wireless router? The WPS function has no special requirement on the wireless encryption settings; however, it is recommended that you use encryption methods such as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) rather than Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) for accessing a wireless network. The reasons are as follows: If a wireless network is not encrypted or encrypted by using the WEP, the security performance is poor. In addition, on some wireless routers, the WPS function is forcibly disabled if the WEP encryption is used for accessing a wireless network. If several service set identifiers (SSIDs) are enabled on my wireless router, when the WS311 tries to connect to a wireless network by using the WPS function, which wireless network does the WS311 connects to? By using the WPS function, the WS311 tries to connect to the wireless network with the SSID numbered 1. If my router does not support the WPS function, how can I connect the WS311 to a wireless network? You can manually connect the WS311 to a wireless network by using the Web-based configuration utility. If the WS311 fails to connect to a wireless network after I press and hold the WPS button, what should I do? Step 1 Ensure that only one WS311 is trying to connect to the wireless router through the WPS function at a particular moment. Step 2 On the wireless router, ensure that the wireless network function and the WPS function implemented through the PBC method are enabled. Note that on some wireless routers, the WPS function is forcibly disabled if the WEP encryption is used for accessing a wireless network. Step 3 Check the positions of the wireless router and the WS311. Ensure that they are far from the electric appliances, such as a microwave oven, a refrigerator, or a cordless telephone, that generate strong magnetic or 16
electric fields. Step 4 It is recommended that you place the wireless router and the WS311 in an open space. Although radio signals can pass through obstacles, passing through too many obstacles such as cement or wooden walls can affect the transmission of radio signals of a wireless network. 17
