Background
ThemiKEY“keyfob”isasmall,batterypowered802.15.4compliantradiotransmitter.AmiKEYhasone
LEDandthreebuttonsandresemblesthekeylessentrydevicefoundwithmostmoderncars.
TheintentofthemiKEYistoallowcontrolofamLOCKattimeswhennoothercommunicationlinkis
possible.Forexample,atruckdrivermaycarryamiKEYalongwithcargowhichissecuredbyanmLOCK
sothat,inthecaseofanunscheduledinspection,hecouldunlockandthenre‐lockthecargo.
Operation
Therearethreebuttonsonthekeyfob:
Power–bluebuttonlocatedtopleft.Thisbuttonispressedandheldtopowertheradiotransmitter
andtobegintransmissionofa1‐secondburstofradiotraffic.TheLEDwillilluminate(andpossibly
blink)forthedurationofthebuttonpress.
Note:theothertwobuttons(grey)areintendedforfutureuseandcurrentlydonothing.Thesebuttons
donotpowerthedevice,andthereforewouldhavetobeheldincombinationwiththePowerbutton.

EachmiKEYistypicallypairedwithonemLOCK.Thetwodevicessharecommonconfigurationwhich
mayinclude:channeldesignations,encryptionkeys,andaddressinginformation.Itisalsopossibleto
configureaone‐to‐manyscenariowherebyonemiKEYcouldcommunicatewithmanymLOCKs.
Maintenance
ThemiKEYusesasmallreplaceablebattery.Batteryreplacementiscurrentlyonlydonebythe
manufacturer.
RadioTransmission
WhenthePowerbuttonispressed,the802.15.4radiowilltransmitaburstofapproximately100frames
withashort(severalmilliseconds)gapbetweenframes.Thedurationofthe“burst”willbe
approximately1secondoruntilthemiKEYreceivesanacknowledgmentfromthetargetedmLOCK.The
intentoftheburstistosignalamLOCKwhichmaybeinalowpowerstate.WhenthemLOCKreceives
oneoftheframesintheburstitwillacknowledgethesignalandtheburstwillterminate.Whenthis
occurs,theLEDonthemiKEYwillblinkonce.AllcommunicationbetweenthemiKEYandthemLOCKis
doneusing802.15.4dataframeswhicharetypicallyencrypted.
802.15.4Channels
TheIEEE802.15.4specificiondefinesasetofchannels:11(2405MHz)though26(2480MHz).AmiKEY
willtypicallybeconfiguredtoutilizetwoofthesechannelsknownasthe“wake”and“sleep”channels.
Thesignalburstconsistsofoneframeonthe“wake”channelfollowedbyrepeatedframesonthe
“sleep”channel.IfanmLOCKisnotinlowpowermode(i.e.“awake”)itwillrespondimmediately,
otherwiseitwillrespondtothefirst“sleep”frameitreceives.
