Export Compliance InformationThis product is controlled by the export laws and regulations of theUnited States of America. The U.S. Governement may restrict theexport or re-export of this product to certain individuals and/or des-tinations. For further information, contact the U.S. Department ofCommerce, Bureau of Industry and Security or visitwww.bis.doc.gov.1 Product OverviewThe 9522A L-Band Transceiver (LBT) is designed to be integratedinto a specific application with other hardware and software to pro-duce a solution designed for a specific application or vertical market. Some examples of these solutions include a maritime voice telepho-ny terminal or a vehicle tracking solution. The LBT functionally supports all of Iridium’s voice and data servic-es. Applications can be built to use one or multiple services usingthe voice and data interfaces. The 9522A is a functional replacementto the 9522 “Sebring” LBT. However it should be noted that there aresome differences to the voice interface. The 9522A is regulatory approved for FCC, Canada, and CE assum-ing an antenna with a gain of ≤3 dBi. This allows the LBT to be inte-grated into a variety of subscriber products, or retrofitted into exist-ing LBT-based products. These products, when integrated togetherwill require Regulatory testing to be conducted by the integrator. The LBT is essentially provided as a ‘black box’ with all interfacesprovided via a DB25 connector. The product provides the core trans-ceiver module and SIM card reader. All other functions and hardwaresuch as keypad, display, power supply, antenna etc. must be provid-ed by the solution developer. The DB25 provides the following inter-faces and connections:• Analog Audio• Control / Digital Audio• RS232• Power Input• On / Off2 Standards ComplianceThe 9522A is designed to comply with the standards for RadioEmissions Compliance, Electromagnetic Compatibility, and ACSafety in the United States, European Union and Canada.2.1 FCC ComplianceThe 9522A is certified under 47 CFR Part 25 as FCC ID:Q639522A. Italso complies with Part 15 of the FCC Regulations. Operation is sub-ject to the condition that this device does not cause harmful interfer-ence. Any changes or modifications, including the use of a non-stan-dard antenna, not expressly approved by the party responsible forcompliance could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.IMPORTANT: To comply with FCC RF exposure requirements, a min-imum separation of 20 cm is required between the antenna and allpersons.2.2 CE ComplianceThis product, when marked with the CE symbol, complies with theEuropean Community Council Directive for R&TTE, 99/5/EC, provid-ed that the integrator/user adheres to the instructions detailed in thisLBT Interface Specification. This product is in compliance with appli-cable ETSI standards. Compliance with the requirements of ETSI EN301 489 requires the use of a shielded digital data interface cable.143755_user_guide 2/1/05 5:00 PM Page 4

Another 6-32 thread type option is toinsert a helical coil insert with a 6-32 internal thread into these fea-tures thus accommodating 6-32 threaded fasteners as mountinghardware for the 9522A LBT. National Aerospace StandardNASM122238 serves as a technical reference for the recommendedhelical coil insert.3.5 Connector Sealing in Harsh EnvironmentsIf the 9522A LBT is to be used in a harsh environment with exposureto high humidity or water, the mating of the multi-interface connec-tor must be further sealed to protect from moisture entry. It is recom-mended that a bead of RTV silicone sealant be placed on the con-nector mating to the 9522A LBT’s multi-interface connector whereshown in Figure 6 below. A material similar to Permatex 16B shouldbe used.Figure 6: Place a bead of Silicone RTV material along this area allaround the connector mating to the 9522A LBT’s multi-interface con-nector.4 Electrical InterfacesThe subsections to follow contain interface information for the elec-trical interfaces of the 9522A LBT.4.1 DC Power Interface4.1.1 DC Power Interface Signal DescriptionsThe DC power interface is comprised of the DC power inputs and acontrol signal as summarized in Table 4 below. The EXT_PWR andGND inputs are used to supply DC power to the 9522A LBT. TheEXT_ON_OFF control input is pulled to a GND level to toggle the9522A LBT on and off.
