WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED FOR ONE TYPE GAS
ONLY: This water heater is equipped for one type gas
only. Check the model rating plate near the gas control
valve for the correct gas. DO NOT USE THIS WATER
HEATER WITH ANY GAS OTHER THAN THE ONE
SHOWN ON THE MODEL RATING PLATE. Failure to
usethe correct gascan causeproblemswhich can result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE. If you have any questions or doubts consult
your gassupplieror local utility.
AWARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQ-
UIDS (VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE PRESENT OR
STORED (GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS
ETC): Flammable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents,
propane(LP) or butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable
vapors, may be improperly stored or used in suchareas.
The gaswater heater pilot light or main burner can ignite
such vapors. The resulting flashback and fire can cause
death or seriousburns to anyone in the area, as well as
property damage.
If installation in such areas is your only option, then the
installation must be accomplishedin a way that the pilot
flame and main burner flame are elevatedfrom the floor
at least 18 inches. While this may reduce the chancesof
flammable vapors from a floor spillbeingignited, gasoline
andother flammable substancesshouldnever be stored or
used in the same room or area containing a gas water
heater or other openflame or sparkproducingappliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents
from other areas oftbe structure to the appliance.
_,WARNING
If this water heater will be used in beauty shops, barber
shops,cleaning establishments, or self-service laundries
with dry cleaning equipment, it is imperative that the
water heater or water heaters be installed so that com-
bustion and ventilation air be taken from outside these
areas. Refer to the "Facts to Consider About the
Location" section of this manual and also the latest edi-
tion of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, also
referred to as NFPA 54 for specificsprovidedconcerning
air required.
AWARNING ]
A fire can start if combustible materials suchas clothing,
cleaningmaterials, or flammalde liquidsare placedagainst
or next to the water heater.
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was pruvid-
ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve
certified by anationally recognized testing laboratory
that mmntalns periodic inspectionof production of listed
equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements
for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for
Hot Water Supply Systems, and the latest edition of
ANSI Z21.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If
replaced, the valve must meet the requirements of Ioca
codes, but not lessthan a combination temperature and
pressure relief valve certified as meeting the require-
ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff
Devices for Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSI Z21.22 by
a nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
)eriodic inspectionof production of listed equipment or
materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure
not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure
of the water heater (150 Ibs./sq. in.) and a discharge
capacity not less than the water heater input rate as
shown on the model rating plate. (Electric heaters -
watts divided by 1000x 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the
use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying
with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve model
different from the one furnishedwith the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satis-
fied by the installer or end user of the water heater with
a locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valve
installed inthe designatedopening inthe water heater in
place of the factory furnishedvalve.
For safe ope-_U_n of the_water heater, the relief Valve
must not bq removed from t's desgrated open ng or
plugged ..................................... r
The temperature-pressure_rellef _,,,alvemust be installed
directly into the fitting of the water heater designated
for the relief valve. Posltlon-the-valv_downward_andpro-
vide tubing so that any dischargewill exit only within 6
inches above,o_-_-t'_n_-_£_-b'_lov_the structural
floor. Be certain that no contact is made with any live
electrical part. The discharge opening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances.
Excessivelength, over 30 feet, or use of more than four
elbows can cause restriction and reduce the discharge
capacityof the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between
the relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing
directly to dischargedrain unlessa 6" air gap is provided.
To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property dam-
age, the relief valve must be allowed to dischargewater
in quantities should circumstances demand. If the dis-
charge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may causeproperty damage.
The DischargePipe:
Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of
the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other
restrictions.
Must not be pluggedor blocked.
Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of
both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the
dischargepipe.
Must terminate at an adequate drain.
Must not have any valve between the relief valve and
tank.
Safer-I iPrecautions
AWARNING
A gas water heater cannot operate properly without the
correct amount of air for combustion. Do not install in a
confined area such acloset, unless you provide air as
showninthe "Facts to ConsiderAbout the Location"sec-
tion. Never obstruct the flow of vantilation air, If you have
any doubts or questions at all, call your gas company.
Failure to provide the proper amount of combustionair
can result in a fire or explosion and can cause DEATH,
SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on car-
potlng. Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood
panel beneath the appliance extending beyond the full
width and depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches
(76.2mm) in any direction, or if the appliance is installed
in an alcoveor closet, the entire floor must be coveredby
the panel. Failure to heed this warning may result in a
fire hazard.
• _,WARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-
perature which will satisfy clothes washing, dish washing,
and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently
injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to
be permanently injured by hot water than others. These
includethe elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/men-
tally handicapped. If anyone usinghot water in your home
f'_sinto one of these groups or if there is a local code or
state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot
water tap, then you must take specialprecautions. In addi-
tion to usingthe lowest possibletemperature setting that
satisfies your hot water needs, a means suchas a mixing
valve, shouldbe used at the hot water taps usedby these
people or at the water heater. Mixing valvesare available
at plumbing supplyor hardware stores. Follow manufac-
turers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changingthe factory setting on the thermostat, read the
"Temperature Regulation"section inthis manual.
AWARNING
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correc-
tion before furtber use. Turn "OFF" gasto water heater
and leave "OFF" until repairs are made, becausefailure
to correct the cause of the sootingcan result in a fire or
explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,
OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
VENT DAMPERS- Any vent damper, whether it is operat-
ed thermally or otherwise must be removed if its use
inhibitsproper drafting of the water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water
heaters having thermal efficiency in excess of 80% may
producea relatively low flue gastemperature. Such tem-
peraturesmay not be high enoughto properly open ther-
mallyoperated vent dampers.This would causespillageof
flue gasesand maycausecarbonmonoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidenceof certificationas com-
plying with the latest edition of American National
Standard ANSI Z21.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67, respectively,
cover electrically and mechanically actuated vent
dampers). Before installation of any vent damper, consult
your local Sears Service Center or the gas utility for fur-
ther information.
_,WARNING
• The appliance and its individualshutoffvalvemust be dis-
connectedfrom the gas supplypiping systemduringany
pressure testing of the gas system at test pressuresin
excessof _ pound per squareinch (3.5kPa).
The appliance must be isolatedfrom the gas supplypip-
ing system by closingits individualmanual shutoff valve
during any pressuretesting of the gas s_upplypiping sys-
tem at test pressures equal or less than ½pound per
squareinch (3.5kPa).
AWARNING
BEFORE LIGHTING [PROPANE (L.R) GAS WATER
HEATERS]: Propane (L.P.) gas is heavier than air, Should
there be a leak in the system, the gas will settle near the
ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas under
mobile homes (even when ventilated), closetsand areas
below ground levelwill serve aspocketsfor the accumula-
tion of this gas. Before attempting to light or relight the
water heater'spilot or turning on a nearby electrical light
switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulated gas in
the area. Search for odor of gas by snifEngat ground level
in the vicinity of the appliance. If odor is detected, follow
steps indicated at "For Your Safety" on the cover pageof
this manual then leave the premises.
AWARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system
may occur if air for combustioncontainscertain chemical
vapors.Spraycan propellants,cleaningsolvents,refrigera-
tor and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool
chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach,
and processchemicals are typical compoundswhich are
potentiallycorrosive.

WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplishedin sucha manner
that if the tank or any connectionsshouldleak, the flow of
water will not causedamage to the structure. When such
locations cannot be avoided, asuitable drain pan should
be installed under the water heater. Drain pansare avail-
able at your local Sears store. Such a drain pan must be
not greater than I '/2inchesdeep, have a minimum length
and width of at least 2inches greater than the water
heater dimensions and must he piped to an adequate
drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air flow.
Under no circumstancesis the manufacturer or Sears to
be he_dliable for any water damage in confection with
this water heater.

HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gascan be producedin a hot
water systemthat has not been usedfor a longperiod of
time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is
extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the possi-
bility of injury under these conditions,we recommend the
hot water faucet be opened for several minutes at the
kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are
connectedto the hot water systemare used(suchas a dis-
hwasher or washingmachine). If hydrogengas is present,
there will probably be an unusual sound similar to air
escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is
iopened. There must be no smoking or open flame near
the faucet at the time it is open.

DO NOT put insulation over any part of the top of the
gaswater heater.
DO NOT put Insulation over the gascontrol valve or
control valvelburner cover, or any accessareas to the
burner.
DO NOT let insulation around the gas water heater to
get within 8 inches of the floor (air must get to the
burner).
DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions, and
safetyrelated warning labelsand materials affixed to the
water heater.
Failure to heed thiswill result in the possibilityof a fire or
explosion.

AWARNING
If the main gas line shutoff serving all gas. appliances is
used, also shut "OFF" the gas at each applnmce. Leave all
gas appliances shut "OFF" until the water heater installa-
tion s €omp ete.
QTurn "OFF" the water to the water
heater. Some installations require that
the water be turned off to the entire
house.
QCheck a_,ain to make sure the gas supply
is "OFF to the water heater. Then dis-
connect the gas supply connection from
the gas control valve.
Attach hose the hearer drain
ato water
valve and put the other end in a floor
drain or outdoors. Open the water heater
drain valve. Open a nearby hot water
faucet which will relieve pressure in the
water heater and speed draining.
Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood where
they connect to the water heater. In most installations
the vent pipe can be liked off after any screw or other
attached devices are removed. Dispose of the draft.
hood. The new water heater has the draft hood which
must be used for proper operation.

®
a. If you have copper piping to the water
heater, the two copper water pipes can
be cut with a hacksaw approximately
four inches away from where they con-
nect to the water heater. This will avoid
cutting off the pipes too short.
A_lditional cuts can be made laterif nec-
essary. Disconnect the temperature-pres-
sure relief valve drain line. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the
drain valve. The water heater is now
completdy disconnected and ready to be
remowd.
b. If you have galvanized pipe to the water
heater, loosen the two galvanized pipes
with apipe wrench at the union in each
line. Also disconnect the piping remain-
ing to the water heater. These pieces
should be saved since they may be-need-
ed when reconnecting the new water
heater. Disconnect the temperature-pres-
sure relief valve drain line. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the
drain valve. The water heater is now
completely disconnected and ready to be
removed.
AWARNIHG
The water passingout of the drainvalve may be extremely
hot. To avoid being scalded, make sureall connectionsare
tight and that the water flow is directed away from any
person.
ACAUTION ]
Mineral buildup or sediment may have accumulatedin the I
old water heater. This causesthe water heater to be much
heavier than normal and this residue, ,f spilled out, could[
causestaining. - - [
Installation Instructions (cont'd)
Facts to Consider About the
Location
You should carefully choose an indoor location for the new
water heater, because the placement is a very important consid-
eration _or the safety of the occupants in the building and for
the most economical use of the appliance. This water heater is
not for use in mobile homes or outdoor installation.
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water
heater in a new location, the following critical points must be
observed.
The location selected should be indoors as close as practical
to the gas vent or chimney to which the water heater vent is
going to be connected, and as centralized with the water
_iping system as possible. The water heater, as all water
eaters, will eventually leak. Do not install without
adequate drainage provisions where water flow will cause
damage.
ACAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of the
water heater must be accomplished in such a manner that if
the tank or any connections should leak, tile flow of water will
not cause damage to the structure. When such locations can-
not be avoided, a suitable drain pan should be installed under
the water heater. Drain pans are available at your local Sears
store. Such a drain pan must be not greater than 1½ inches
deep, have a minimum length and width of at least 2 inches
greater than the water heater dimensions and must be piped
to an adequate drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air
flow. Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or Sears to
be held liable for any water damage in connection with this
water heater.
AWARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

_lammable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents, propane (LP) or
butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable vapors, may be
improperly stored or used in such area_ The gas water heater
pilot light or main burner can ignite such vaporg The resulting
flashbackand fire can cause death or serious burns to anyone in
the area, as well as property damage.
If installation in such areas is your only option, then the installa-
tion must be accomplished in a way that the pilot flame and
main burner flame are elevatedfrom the floor at least 18inche_
While this may reduce the chancesof flammable vaporsfrom a
floor spillbeing ignited, gasolineand other flammable substances
shouldnever be stored or used in the same room or area con-
taining a gaswater heater or other open flame or sparkproduc-

Combustion Air and Ventilation
for Appliances Located in
Unconfined Spaces
Unconfined Space is a space whose volume is not less than 50
cubic feet per 1,000 Btu per hour of the aggregate input rating
of all appliances installed in that space. Rooms communicating
directly with the space in which the appliances are installed,
through openings not furnished with doors, are considered a
part of the unconfined space
In unconfined spaces in buildings, infiltration may be adequate
to provide air for combustion, ventilation and dilution of flue
gases. However, in buildings of tight construction (for example,
weather stripping, heavily insulated, caulked, vapor barrier, etc.),
additional air may need to be provided using the methods
described in Combustion Air and Ventilation for Appliances
Located in Confined Spaces, b.
Combustion Air and Ventilation
for Appliances Located in
Confined Spaces
Confined Space is aspace whose volume is less than 50 cubic
feet per 1,000 Bru per hour of the aggregate input rating of all
appliances installed in that space•
a. ALL AIR FROM INSIDE BUILDINGS:
(See Page 9Figure 1, and Figure 2 below)
The confined space shall be provided with two permanent
openings communicating directly with an additional room(s)
of sufficient volume so that the combined volume of all
spaces meets the criteria for an unconfined space. The total
input of all gas utilization equipment installed in the com-
bined space shall be considered in making this determination.
Each opening shall have a minimum free area of one square
inch per 1,000 BTU per hour of the total input rating of all
gas utilization equipment in the confined space, but not less
than 100 square inches. One opening shall commence within
12 inches of the top and one commencing within 12 inches
of the bottom of the enclosure.
1. When direcdy communicating with the outdoors, each open-
ing shall have a minimum free area of I square inch per 4,000
BTU per hour of total input rating of all equipment in the
enclosure. (See Figure 3.)
2. When communicating with the outdoors through vertical
ducts, each opening shall have aminimum free area of 1
s,q[uareinch per 4,000 BTU per hour of total input rating of
all equipment in the enclosure. (See Figure 4.)
Figure 4 ]
3. When communicating with the outdoors through hOrizontal
ducts, each opening shall have a minimum free area of 1
s_uare inch per 2,000 BTU per hour of total input rating of
all equipment in the enclosure. (See Figure 5.)
Figure 2 ]
b. ALL AIR FROM OUTDOORS: (see Figures 3-5)
The confined space shall be provided with two permanent
openings, one commencing within 12 inches of the top and
one commencing within 12 inches from the bottom of the
enclosure• The openings shall communicate directly, or by
ducts, with the outdoors or spaces (crawl or attic) that freely
communicate with the outdoors.
Figure 3 ]
Figure 5 ]
10
,When ducts are used, they shall be of the same cross-sectional
area as the free area of the openings to which they connect.
The minimum short side dimension of rectangular air ducts
shall not be less than 3 inches. (See Figure 5.)
5. Louvers and Grilles: In calculating free area, consideration
shall be given to the blocking effecr of louvers, grilles or
screens protecting openings. Screens used shall not be smaller
than ¼ inch mesh. if the free area through a design of louver
or grille is known, it should be used in calculating the size
opening required to provide the free area specified. If the
design and free area is not known, it may be assumed that
wood louvers will be 20-25 percent free area and metal louvers
and grilles will have 60-75 percent free area. Louvers and
grilles shall be fixed in the open position or interlocked with
the equipment so that they are opened automatically during
equipment operation.
6. Special Conditions Created by Mechanical Exhausting or
Fireplaces: Operation of exhaust fans, ventilation systems,
clothes dryers or fireplaces may create conditions requiring
special attention to avoid unsatisfactory operation of installed
gas utilization equipment.

_,WARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with acombination temperatom-pressures relief vane certified
by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
periodic inspectionof production of listed equipment or mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water SupplySystems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
ments of ASMF. If replaced, the valve must meet the require-
ments of local codes, but not lessthan a combination tempera-
turn and pressurerelief valve certified as meeting the require-
ments for Relief Valvesand Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor
Hot Water Supply Systems,ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog-
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of
bmduction of listedequipment or materials,
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressurenot
to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the
water heater (150 Ibsdsq.in.) and a discharge capacity not less
than the water heater input rate asshown on the model rating
plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valve complying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may require a valve model different from the one
furnished with the water heater
Compliance with such local requirements must he satisfiedby
the installer or end user of the water heater with a locallypre-
scribed temperature-pressure relief valve installed in the desig-
nated opening in the water heater in place of the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
For safeoperation of the water heater, the relief valve must not
be removed from it's designatedopening or plugged.
The temperature.pressure relief valve must be installeddirectly
into the fitting of the water heater designatedfor the relief valve.
Positionthe valve downward and provide tubing so that anydis-
charge will exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance
below the structural floor. Be certain that no contact is made
with any live electrical part. The dischargeopening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbowscan cause
restriction and reduce the dischargecapacit7 of the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to he placed between the relief
valveand the tank. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge
drain unlessa 6" air gap is provided. To prevent bedily injury,haz-
ard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be allowed
to dischargewater in quantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand. If
the discharge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may causeproperty damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
Must not he smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the
valve, or have any reducing couplingsor other restrictions.
Must not be pluggedor blocked.
Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Must terminate at an adequate drain.
Must not have any valve between the relief valveand tank.
A, WARNING
The temperature-preasure relief valve must be manually
opereted at least once a year. CauCdonshouldbe teken to
ensurethat (I) no one isin front of or aroundthe outlet of
the temperature-pressure relief valvedischargeline,and (2)

balforeseeable by the manufacturer of the water heater, you must
consult your gas company to aid you in determining the proper
venting for your water heater from the vent tables in the latest edi-
tion of the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1, also referred to
asNFPA 54.
To fill the water heater with water:
Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to
the right (clockwise). The drainvalve is on the lower front of
the water heater.
Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open
when the water heater is in use.
To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by
opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run
until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the
water heater and the piping.
Check all new water piping for leaks.Repairas needed.

Operating Instructions (cont'd)
Temperature Regulation
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water tem-
_oerature in certain situations may vary up to 30°F higher or
wer at the point of use such as, bathtubs, showers, sink, etc.
This means that when the temperature adjustment dial is set at
the mark approximating 120°F, the actual water temperature at
any hot water tap could be as high as 150°F or as low as 90°E
Any water heater's intended purpose is to heat water. Hot water
is needed for cleaning (bodies, dishes, clothing). Hot water will
present a scald hazard. Depending on the time element, and the
people involved (normaladulrs, children, toddlers, elderly,
infirm, etc.) scalding may occur at different temperatures.
Turn the water temperature dial dockwise _f"_) to decrease
the temperature, or counterclockwise (€"- _"_) to increase the
temperature.
: AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will
satisfyclothes washing,dishwashing, and other sanitizingneeds
can scald and permanently injure you upon contact. Some peo-
ple are more lilmly to be permanently injured by hot water than
otherg These includethe elderly, children, the infirm, or physical-
b/mentally handicapped. If anyone usinghot water inyour home
fits into one of these groupsor if there isa localcode or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water ta_ then
you must take special pmcaution_ In additionto usingthe lowest
possibletemperature setting that satisfiesyour hot water needs,
a means such asa mixing valve, shouldbe usedat the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves
are availableat plumbingsupplyor hardware stores.Follow man-
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
'_remperature Regulation" section inthis manual.
AWARNING
Never allow smallchildrento usea hot water tap,or to draw
their ownbathwater. Never leavea childor handicappedper-
sonunattendedina bathtubor shower.
The thermostat of this water heater has been factory set at its
lowest position, to reduce the risk of scald injury. It is adjustable
and must be reset to the desired temperature setting. The mark
(A) HOT indicative of approximately 120°F is the preferred
starting point. Some states have arequirement for alower set-
ting. If you need hotter water, follow directions for temperature
adjustment, but beware of the warnings in this section.

Service and Adjustment
Tank (Sediment) Cleaning
Sediment build-up on the tank bottom may create varying
amounts of noise, and if left in the tank will cause premature
tank failure. In some water areas, you may not be able to drain
all sediment deposits by simply draining the tank. In these cases
Mag-Erad (part no. 23600) can be used to help remove the sedi-
ment deposits. This may be ordered from theSears Service
Center. For ordering, refer to the Parts Order List section.
Burner Inspection
AWARNING
Donnt usethisapld'_n__ hasbeenunderwater.
Immediately call a Sears Service Technician to inspect the
appliance and to replace the gas control or any part of the"
Jburner system which hasbeen under water.
Venting System Inspection
At least once a year avisual inspection should be made of the
venting system. You should look for:
Obstructions which could cause improper venting. The com-
bustion and ventilation air flow must not be obstructed.
Damage or deterioration which could cause improper vent-
i ing or leakage of combustion products.
Rusted flakes around top ofwarer heater.
At least once ayear a visual inspection should be made of the
main burner andpilot burner. The drawing is for your reference.
You should check for sooting which is not normal and will
impair proper coinbustion.
AWARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may
occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical vapors.
Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerator and air
conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium
and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach, and process chemicals are
typical compounds which are potentially corrosive.
_,WARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systemsmay present a serious
health risk or asphyxiation.
_,WARNING 7
Be sure the vent piping is properly connected to prevent I
escape of dangerous flue gasses which could cause deadly [
asphyxiation, j
_,WARNING J
If after inspection of the vent system you found sooting or J
deterioration, something is wrong. Call the local gas utility to J
correct the problem and clean or replace the flue and venting J
before resuming operation of the water heater. J
_,WARNING
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correction
before further use. Turn "OFF" gasto water heater and leave
"OFF" until repairs are made, becausefailure to correct the
cause of the sooting can result in a fire or explosion ceusln2
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE.
Burner Cleaning
÷
In the event your burner needs cleaning, use the following
instructions:
If inspection of the burner shows that cleaning is required, turn
the gas control knob clockwise (f-_) to the "OFF" position,
depressing slightly.
NOTE: The knob cannot be turned I_om "PILOT" to "OFF"
unless knob is depressed slightly. DO NOT FORCE.
Loose deposits on or around the burner can be removed by care-
fully using the hose of a vacuum cleaner inserted through the
access door of the water heater. If the burner needs to be removed
for additional cleaning, call the Sears Service Center to remove
and clean the burner and correct the problem that required the
burner to be cleaned.

Temperature-Pressure Relief
Valve Operation
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated
at least once a year.
TEMPERATURE-PRESSURE
DISCHARGE PIPE
Failure to install and maintain a new properly listed tempera-
ture-pressure relief valve will release the manufacturer from any
claim which might result from excessive temperature or pressure.
AWARNING
If the temperatu_-pressure relief valve on the appliance
weeps or discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal
expansion. Your water heater may have a check valve
installed in the water line or a water meter with a check
valve. Consult the Sears Service Center for further informa-
tion. Do not plugthe temperature-prassure relief valve.
AWARNING
When checking the temperature-pressure relief valve opera-
tlon, make sure that (I) no one is in front of or around the
outlet of the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line,
and (2) that the water manually discharged will not causeany
property damage because the water may be extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continues to release water, immediately close the
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valve with a new one.
ASSEMBLY
WASHER
Housekeeping
Vacuum around base of water heater for dust, dirt, and lint on a
regular basis.
AWARNING
INSTALLED IN SUITABLE AREA: To insure sumcient venti-
lation and combustion air supply, proper clearances from the
water heater must be maintained. See "Facts to Consider
About the Location" section. Combustible materials such as
clothing, cleaning materials, or flammable liquids, etc. must
not be placed against or adjacent to the water heater which
¢_n cause a _re.

Troubleshooting Guide
Start Up Conditions
CONDENSATION THERMAL EXPANSION
Whenever the water heater is filled with cold water, a certain
amount of condensation will form while the burner is on: A
water heater may appear to be leakingwhen in fact the water is
condensation. This usually happens when:
When anew water heater is filled with cold water for the
first time.
When gas burns and water vapor isproduced in water
heaters, particularly high efficiency models where flue tem-
peratures are lower.
When you use large amounts of hot water in ashort time
and the refill water is very cold.
°
Moisture from the products of combustion condense on the
cooler tank surfaces and form drops of water which may fall
onto the burn6r or other hot surfaces to produce a"sizzling" or
"frying" noise.
Excessive condensation can cause pilot outage due to water run-
ning down the flue tube onto the main burner and putting out
the pilot.
Because of the suddenness and amount of water, condensation
water may be diagnosed as a "tank leak". After the water in the
tank warms up (about 1-2 hours), the condition should
disappear.
Do not assume the water heater is leaking until there has been
enough time for the water in the tank to warm up.
An undersized water heater will cause more condensation. The
water heater must be sized properly to meet the family's
demands for hot water including dishwashers, washing machines
and shower heads.
Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and
early spring months when incoming water temperatures are at
their lowest.
Good venting is essential for a gas fired water heater to operate
properly as well as to carry away products of combustion and
water vapor.
SMOKE/ODOR
It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and
odor during the initial start-up. This is due to burning offofoil
from metal parts, and will disappear in a short while.
Water sup,ply systems may, because of such events as high line
pressure, l_luent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer among
others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves,
check valves, back flow preventers, etc...to control these types of
problems. When these devices are not equipped with an internal
by-pass, and no other measures are taken, the devices cause the
water system to be dosed. As water is heated, it expands (ther-
mal expansion) and closed systems do not allow for the expan-
sion of heated water.
The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated and
increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of
the water heater's temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the
valve will relieve the excesspressure. The temperatux_pressure
relief valve is not intendedfor the _onstant relief of thermal
expansion. This is an unacceptable condition and must be
corrected.
It is recommended that any devices installed which could create
a closed system have aby-pass and/or the system have an expan-
sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion in
the water system. Expansion tanks are available for ordering
through the Sears Service Center. Contact the local plumbing
inspector, water supplier, and/or the Sears Service Center for
assistance in controlling these situations.

SMELLY WATER
In each glasslined water heater there is installed at least one
anode rod (see parts section) for corrosion protection of the
tank. Certain water conditions will cause areaction between this
rod and the water. The most common complaint associatedwith
the anode rod is one of a "rotten egg smell". This odor is derived
from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is
the result of four factors which must all be present for the odor
to develop:
a. a concentration of sulfate in the supply water.
b. litde or no dissolved oxygen in the water.
c. asulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This
harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydmgen in the:tank. This is caused by
the corrosion protective action of the anode.

Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater
models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material,
and then chlorinating the water heater tank and all hot water
lines. Contact Sears Service for further information concerning

STRANGE SOUNDS
Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of some metal
parts during periods of heat-up and cool-down do not represent
harmful or dangerous conditions.
Condensation causes sizzling and popping with the burner area
during heatin_ and coolin_ periods and should be considered
normal. See Condensation section.
AWARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot
water system that has not been used fo'r a long Perind of tlme
(generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is extremely
flammable and explosive. To prevent the possibility of injury
under these conditions, we recommend the hot water faucet
be opened for several minutes at the kitchen sink before any
electrical applianceswhich are connected to the hot water sys-
tem are used (such as a dishwasher or washing machine). If
hydrogen gas is present, there will probably be an unusual
sound similar to air escapingthrough the pipe as the hot water
faucet is opened. There must be no smoking or open flame
near the lancet at the time it isopon.

HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM WATER IS TOO HOT
This water heater is equipped with an automatic gas shut offsys-
tern. The high temperature shut off is built into the gas control
valve. This system shuts off the gas supply to the water heater
burners when high water temperatures are present. It is non-
resettable. If the high temperature shut off activates, the gas con-
trol valve must be replaced. If this were to occur, turn _OFF" the
entire gas supply to the water heater. Contact the Sears Service
Center.
The temperature adjustment dial may be set too high. See the
"Temperature Adjustment" section.
NOTE: A period of time is necessary after an adjustment has
been made for the water temperature to reach the new tem-
perature setting.
If lower temperature settings will not lower die water tempeta-
ture, call the SeaxsService Center.
AWARNING
Should overheatingoccur or the gassupplyFailto shutoff,
turn OFF" the manua gascontro valve to the applance.
NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
[ Check the manual gas shut offvalve to be sure it is open.
Check the pilot flame. It may have gone out. All models have
an opening behind the outer door for viewing the pilot.
If the pilot is not lit, follow the "Lighting" instructions in this
manual are located above the gas control valve on the water
heater to relight thepilot. If the water was extremely hot and is
now cold, the high limit safety temperature shut off may have
put out the burner and pilot. If the high temperature shut off
activates, the gas controlvalve must be replaced. Contact the
Sears Service Center.
The gas control knob must be mined to the _ON" position.
The temperature adjustment dial may be set too low. See the
"Temperature Regulation" section.
The gas company can check the gas input to see if it is correct.
iLook for leaking or open hot water faucets. Make sure all are

dosed.
The cold water inlet temperature may be colder during the
winter months. It will take longer to heat die water and seem
like less hot water.
If you cannot find what is wrong, call the Sears Service Center.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will
satisfyclotheswashing,dish washing,and other sanitizingneeds
can scald and permanently injure you upon contact. Some peo-
ple are more likelyto be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These includethe elderly, children, the infirm, or physicag
ly/mentally handicapped. If anyoneusinghot water in your home
fits into one of these groupsor if there isa localcode or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water _ then
mu must take specialprecaution_ In additionto usingthe lowest
x_sible temperature setting that satlsEesyour hot water needs,
means such as amixing valve, should be usedat the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. M_ng valves
are availableat plumbingsupply or hardware stor-_ Follow man-
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
"Temperature Regulation"seclJoninthis manual.
AWARNING
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the
water temperature in certain situations may be hotter
than the thermostat setting.
Short, frequent draws of hot water - especially with very
cold incoming water - can shock the thermostat into brief
operation resulting in hotter and hotter layers of water
closer to the top of the tank.
Changes in hot water usage patterns or raising the tem-
perature differential between the cut-on of the thermo-
stat and the cold water temperature will usually eliminate
the problem.
