Doorsandlocksforoffices,classroomsandother
facilitiesmaynottopanyone’sprioritylist.The
samemightbesaidofemergencylighting.But
whensupportofcampussafetyandsecurityis
considered,theirimportanceisundeniable.Asa
result,dueattentiontoselecting,inspectingand
maintainingdoorsandaccompanyinghardware,as
wellemergencylightingsystems,seemsamustfor
everyinstitution.Atthemostfundamentallevel,this
meansassuringthatvitalcomponentswork
togetherproperly,accordingtoAngeloFaenza,generalmanagerofPERSONAandvicepresident,
campuselectronicaccesscontrolforASSAABLOY.
“Forthelocktowork,whethermechanicalorEAClockingdevice,theverybasicsofthedoorand
framebeinginsyncwiththelockingdeviceiscritical,”hesays.“Onceyouhavethatdoorandframe
operatingproperly,thebalancebetweenlifesafetyandsecurityshouldalwayscomedowntohow
theinstitutionisprotectingitsmostpreciousasset—thestudents,facultyandstaff.”

safety,”hesays,notingthattheuseofBuildersHardwareManufacturersAssociation(BHMA)ANSI
GradeOneULlistedhardwareisessential.Headdsthattherearemanychoicesinlessergrade
hardware,whichmightnotsatisfycoderequirements.
“Certainlyfirerateddoorsthatmeetcodearealsoessential,andavarietyoffunctioninglifesafety
hardwaremeritsconsideration.”Examplesincludelocksetsforclassroomsthatallowinstructorsto
locktheexteriorleverinthecaseofemergencywithoutgoingoutsidetheclassroom.Availablein
bothcylindricalandmortisedesign,theseproductssupportsafetyandsecuritywhilemeeting
buildingandfirecodes.

Institutionsshouldestablishkeycontrolpolicies
andprocedures,andfollowthem.Thepurposeof
thekeypolicyistoprotectthepropertyand
privacyofthecollegeoruniversity,andof
individualsassignedtouseuniversityfacilities,by
limitingaccesstosuchfacilitiestoassigned
individualsandtotheirsupervisors.Thenumber
ofkeysissuedshouldbekepttoaminimum,and
aprocessforreplacinglostkeysshouldalsobe
included.
AdvancePlanning
Duringinitialconstruction,reachingoutfortheright
technicalexpertiseinproperproductapplications
andcodecomplianceisakeytosuccess,
accordingtoFaenza.
“Getthespecs,codesandcomplianceissues
doneatthetimeofpreparingthespecification
whichwillleadtoaproperdoorandhardware
schedule,”hesays.“Countontherespective
expertsintheirfieldtohelpwiththis.”
Hesaysthisapproachcanheadoffproblems,
includingaddedcostsformeasuressuchas
havingtoretrofitanewdoorandframebefore
occupancy.“Somanytimesabrandnewdoorand
framearecutpostinstallandpreoccupancy
becauseproperattentiontoapplicationand
compliancewasnotdonecorrectlybeforebid,”
Faenzasays.“Dothisearlyintheplanningstages
withtheexperts.”
Whilesecurityisparamount,otherfactorsshould
alsobeconsidered,dependingontheneedsofspecificcampusenvironments,saysDaleMathias,
vicepresidentofmultihousingsalesforKABAAccess&DataSystems.
“Inastudenthousingenvironment,productdesignandfinishisimportant,”hesays.“Thefinish
shouldbedurabletowithstandheavyuseandabuse.Andanantimicrobialfinishcanhelpcontrol
bacterialspreadinenclosedheavilyusedenvironments.”
Onceequipmentisinplace,focusedmaintenanceeffortsarerecommended.
Attheminimum,facilitiesstaffshouldfollowaregularmaintenanceplanthatincludescheckingon
vandalizedhardware,upgradingtomeetcodechangesandincorporatingadvancementsinproduct
design.
“Settingupappropriateprojectmaintenanceschedulesiscritical,”Faenzasays.“Campuses
generally
haveexcellent,welltrainedandskilledtradesmen.Itislessanissueofskillthanwhetherthe
campusplansforit.”
Mathiasaddsthatforbothtraditionalandelectronicequipment,scheduledmaintenanceisakeyto
forestallingproblems.
“Forelectronic,batteryoperateddevices,setupmaintenanceschedulesforbatterychangeonan
annualorsemiannualbasisifnecessary.Andscheduledoorinspectionthroughoutcampus,
especiallycoldenvironments,toinsureproperclosureandsecuritywherecritical.”

Inplanningahead,Mathiasadvisesmovingaway
frommechanicalorhardkeyedequipmentwhere
possible.
“Alwaysplanandbudgetforelectronicaccess
controlinprivatizedorpublicstudenthousing,
studyareas,researchandpublicgatheringareas
forsafetyandsecurityreasons,”hesays.
Mathiasnotesthatwhilehardwiredsystemscan
beeffective,wirelesssecuritysystemshave
becomethelogicalnextstepforcampussecurity.
“Wirelesssecurityhasevolvedandisa
dependabletechnologytoday,”hesays.“Itiscost
effectiveandlessthanhalfthecostoftraditional
hardwiredsystems.”
Withlighting,attentiontosecurityissuescanalso
bringcampusimprovements.Insomecases,theemphasisfallsonbackuplightingforuseduring
powerfailures.Whetherrelyingongeneratorsorbatterybackupsystems,theselightssupportsafe
egressfromdarkenedbuildingswhilealsoprovidinglightingforemergencyworkers.
Manyschoolsarealsoutilizingblueemergencylights,withnewerLEDtechnologyproviding
increasedbrightnessandreducingenergyconsumptionatthesametime.Whencombinedwith
easytousecallboxes,theyenhancesecurityinparkinglots,alongwalkwaysandinothercampus
locations.
Certainlyfordoors,locksandrelatedequipment,upfronteffortsarealmostsuretopayoffinthe
longrun.
“Thedoorandframeandtheaccompanyinghardwareoraccesspointsaretheonethingthatnoone
noticesuntilthereisaproblem,”Faenzasays.“Whenthereisaproblemitissuddenlyurgent,asitis
themeansbywhichpeopleenterandleavebuildingsaswellastheirsuiteoroffice.”
Intheend,hesays,theuseofhighqualityhardware,doors,framesandaccesspoints,alongwith
theworkofproperlytrainedtradesstaff,willgoalongwaytowardsheadingoffemergenciesand
promotingasecurecampus.

Indealingwithfacilitiesrelatedsecurityissues,choicesarenotalwaysclearcut.Herearethree
optionsworthpondering.
1.Glassornoglass?Doorsconstructedofglass,orofothermaterialswithglassinserts,are
popularonmanycampuses.Butaretheyagoodchoicefromasecurityviewpoint?Advocatespoint
totheincreasedvisibilitythatcouldallowsecuritypersonnelorotherstospotuntowardactivitymore

readily—andperhapsserveasadeterrentintheprocess.Butothersarguethattheywouldprovide
lessprotectionfromashooterorotherintruder.
2.Whogetsamasterkey?Thismayfallunderthe“nothing’ssimple”adage.Withtraditionallock
andkeysystems,itmakessensetolimitthenumberofstaffmemberswhohaveaccesstomaster
keys.Butwhereshouldthatlinebedrawn?Obviously,thefewerissued,thebetter.Howcanthe
bestbalancebeachievedbetweensecurityandconvenienceforbuildingusers,especiallythose
withlegitimateneedforafterhoursaccess?
3.Howmuchisenough?Withsomelightingneeds,acommonviewisthemore,thebetter.But
withemergencylighting,whichbydefinitionisinfrequentlyused,thequestionarisesastotheideal
levelofresourcededication.Justhowmuchshouldbeinvestedinmaintainingorupdating
emergencylightingsystems?Andhowoftenshouldthisberevisited?
