6. PHONE SAFETY AND CARE
6.1. Background
First introduced in 1984, the hand-held portable cellular telephone is one
of the most exciting and innovative electronic products ever developed.
With it you can stay in contact with your office, your home, emergency
services, etc.
Your LGP-2200W telephone is a radio transmitter and receiver. When it is ON,
it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) energy. The phone
operates in the frequency range of 824 MHz to 894 MHz. When you use your
phone, the system handling your call controls the power level at which your
phone transmits. The power level can range from 0.006 of a watt to 046 of 3
watt.
6.2. Exposure to Radio Frequency Energy
In 1991, the Institute of Electronical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and in
1992, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) updated the 1982 ANSI
Standard for safety levels with respect to human exposure to RF energy. Over
120 scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, government health
agencies, and industry, after reviewing the available body of research,
developed this updated standard.
In March 1993, The US. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
proposed the adoption of this updated standard.
The design of the LGP-2200W phone complies with this updated standard. Of
course, if you want to limit RF exposure even further than the updated ANSI
Standard, you may choose to control the duration of your calls and operate
your phone in the most power efficient manner.
6.3, For Best Performance
To properly operate the phone and maintain safe and satisfactory service,
follow these rules.
0 Extend the antenna fully.
0 Hold the phone with the antenna up and over your shoulder.
0 Do not hold the phone antenna at any time.
23
LG information 3. Communications LGP-zznow
0 Do not use the phone with a damaged antenna.
0 Speak directly into the mouthpiece.
0 Use the phone when the car is stopped.
Avoid exposing the phone and accessories to rain or liquid spills. If the phone
gets wet, turn the power off immediately and remove the battery pack. If the
phone is inoperable, then return it to the dealer for service.
Only authorized personnel should install or service the phone and its
accessories. Faulty installation or service may be dangerous and may
invalidate the warranty.
6.4. Driving Safety
Talking on the phone while driving is extremely dangerous and is illegal in some
states. Remember, safety comes first.
Check the laws and regulations on the use of PCS phones in the areas where
you drive. Always obey them.
When using the phone in the car:
0 Give full attention to driving
0 Use hands-free operation
0 Pull off the road and park before making or answering a call.
If you must use the phone while driving, please use one-touch, speed dialing,
and auto answer modes.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE lNSTRUCTIONS MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS
PERSONAL INJURY AND POSSIBLE PROPERTY DAMAGE.
6.5. Other Safety Guidelines
For the safe and efficient operation of your phone, observe the following
guidelines.
Remember to follow any special regulations in force in any given area. Always
turn off the phone wherever its use is forbidden or when it may cause
24
LG Information a. Communications LGP-2200W
interference or danger.
6.5.1. Electronic Devices
Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF energy. However, RF
energy from PCS telephones may affect inadequately shielded electronic
equipment.
RF energy may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic
operating and entertainment systems in motor vehicles. Check with the
manufacturer or its representative to determine if these systems are adequately
shielded from external RF energy.
You should also check with the manufacturer of any equipment that has been
added to your vehicle.
Consult the manufacturer of any personal medical devices (such as
pacemakers, hearing aids, etc.) to determine if they are adequately shielded
from external RF energy.
Turn off the phone in health care facilities and request permission before using
the phone near medical equipment.
6.5.2. Aircraft
Turn the phone off before boarding any aircraft. Use it on the ground only with
crew permission. Do not use it in the air. To prevent possible interference with
aircraft systems, US. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require
you to have permission from a crewmember to use your phone while the plane
is on the ground. To prevent interference with mobile phone systems, FCC
regulations prohibit using your phone while the plane is in the air.
6.5.3. Children
Do not allow children to play with your phone. It is not a toy. Children could hurt
themselves or others (by poking themselves or others in the eye with the
antenna for example). Also, children could damage the phone or make calls
that increase your telephone bills.

645.4. Blasting Areas
To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your phone OFF when in a
“blasting area" or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Construction crews
often use remote control RF devices to set off explosives.
6.5.5. Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
Turn your phone OFF when in any area with a potentially explosive
atmosphere. It is rare but your phone or its accessories could generate sparks.
Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury
or even death,
Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly
marked. They include fueling areas such as gas stations; below deck on boats;
fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities; areas where the air contains
chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other
area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.
Do not transport or store flammable gas, liquid, or explosives in the
compartment of your vehicle which contains your phone or accessories.
Vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane) must
comply with the National Fire Protection Standard (NFPA«53). For a copy of this
standard, contact the National Fire Protection Association, One Batterymarch
Park, Quincy, MA 02269, Attn: Publication Sales Division.
