OperationA12Power ConsumptionEnergy Saving DesignThis monitor complies with the EPA's Energy Star program, which is aprogram designed to have manufacturers of computer equipment buildcircuitry into their products to reduce power consumption during time ofnon-use.This monitor also goes into its energy saving mode if you exceed themonitor's operating limits, such as the maximum resolution of 1280 x1024 or the frequency refresh rates of 30-70kHz horizontal or 50-160Hzvertical. When this monitor is used with a Green or EPA Energy Star PC,or a PC with a screen blanking software following the VESA DisplayPower Management Signalling (DPMS) protocol, this monitor canconserve significant energy by reducing power consumption duringperiods of non-use. When the PC goes into the energy saving mode, themonitor will go into a suspended operation state, indicated by the PowerLED light changing from a green color to an amber color. After anextended period in the suspended mode, the monitor will then enter asemi-OFF mode to conserve more energy. In the semi-OFF mode orDPMS OFF mode as we call it in our specifications, the Power LED willstill show an amber color. When you awaken your PC by hitting a key ormoving the mouse, the monitor will also awaken to its normal operatingmode, indicated by the green Power LED light. By following theseconventions, the power consumption can be reduced to the followinglevels:ModeNormal(Max.)Stand-bySuspendPower OffHori. SyncOnOffOnOffVerti. OperationA13Low Radiation Compliance(MPR II)DDC (Display DataChannel)Low Radiation Compliance (MPR II) and DDC (Display Data Channel)This monitor meets one of the strictest guidelines available today for lowradiation emissions, offering the user extra shielding and an antistaticscreen coating. These guidelines, set forth by a government agency inSweden, limit the amount of emission allowed in the Extremely LowFrequency (ELF) and Very Low Frequency (VLF) electromagnetic range.DDC is a communication channel over which the monitor automaticallyinforms the host system (PC) about its capabilities. This monitor has DDCfunction; DDC2B. DDC2B carry out uni-directional communicationbetween the PC and the monitor. Under these situations, the PC sendsdisplay data to the monitor but not commands to control the monitorsettings. NOTEPC must support DDC functions to do this.If your monitor is displaying a mono chrome image or the wrong resolution, select the DDC OFF function.
Technical InformationA14Display Modes(Resolution)User ModesRecalling Display ModesVideo Memory ModesThe monitor has 36memory locations for display modes, 11 of whichare factory preset to popular video modes.Modes 1-25 are empty and can accept new video data. If the monitordetects a new video mode that has not been present before or is notone of the preset modes, it stores the new mode automatically in oneof the empty modes starting with mode 1.If you use up the 25 blank modes and still have more new videomodes, the monitor replaces the information in the user modes startingwith mode 1.When your monitor detects a mode it has seen before, it automaticallyrecalls the image settings you may have made the last time you usedthat mode. You may, however, manually force a recall of each of the 11 presetmodes by pressing the Recall button. All preset modes areautomatically recalled as the monitor senses the incoming signal. The ability to recall the preset modes is dependent on the signalcoming from your PC’s video card or system. If this signal does notmatch any of the factory modes, the monitor automatically sets itself todisplay the image.1234567891011640 x 480800 x 600800 x 6001024 x 768640 x 400640 x 480800 x 600640 x 480832 x 6241280 x 7681280 x 102437.5046.8853.6868.67731.4731.4737.8843.2749.7560.0263.987575858570606085757560Display Modes (Resolution) Horizontal Freq.(kHz) Vertical Freq.(Hz)VESAVESAVESAVESAVESAVESAVESAVESAMACVESAVESA

AppendixCongratulations! Why do we haveenvironmentally labelledcomputers? What does theenvironmenal labellinginvolve?Environmental Labelling of Personal ComputersYou have just purchased a TCO’95 approved and labelled product!Your choice has provided you with a product developed forprofessional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing theburden on the environment and to the further development ofenvironmentally-adapted electronic products. In many countries, environmental labelling has become an establishedmethod for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to theenvironment. The main problem as far as computers and otherelectronic equipment are concerned is that environmentally harmfulsubstances are used both in the products and during theirmanufacture. Since it has not been possible so far for the majority ofelectronic equipment to be recycled in a satisfactory way, most ofthese potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter Nature. There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energyconsumption levels, that are important from both the working andnatural environment viewpoints. Since all types of conventionalelectricity generation have a negative effect on the environment(acidic- and climatic-influencing emissions, radioactive waste, etc.), it isvital to conserve energy. Electronic equipment in offices consumes asenormous amount of energy, since it is often routinely left runningcontinuously. This product meets the requirements for the TCO’95 scheme, whichprovides for international environmental labelling of personalcomputers. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort bythe TCO (The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees),Naturckyddsföreningen (The Swedish Society for NatureConservation), and NUTEK (The National Board for Industrial andTechnical Development in Sweden), and SEMKO AB (an internationalcertification agency).A20
AppendixWhat does theenvironmenal labellinginvolve?Environmental Labelling of Personal ComputersThe requirements cover a wide range of issues: environment, ergonomics, usability, emission of electrical and magnetic fields, energy consumption and electrical and fire safety. The environmental demands concern, among other things, restrictionon the presence and use of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinatedflame retardants, CFCs (freons), and chlorinated solvents. The productmust be prepared for recycling, and the manufacturer is obliged tohave an environmental plan, which must be adhered to in eachcountry where the company implements its operational policy. The energy requirements include a demand that the computer and/ordisplay, after a certain period of inactivity, shall reduce its powerconsumption to a lower level, in one or more stages. The length oftime to reactivate the computer shall be reasonable for the user.Labelled products must meet strict environmental demands, forexample, in respect of the reduction of electric and magnetic fields, along with physical and visual ergonomics and good usability. The following is a brief summary of the environmental requirementsmet by this product. The complete environmental criteria documentmay be ordered from:TCO Development UnitLinnegatan 14, S-11494 Stockholm, SwedenFAX +46-8 782 92 07E-mail (Internet): development@tco.seCurrent information regarding TCO’95 approved and labelled productsmay also be obtained on the Internet using the address: http://www.tco-info.com/TCO’95 is a co-operative project between:Naturskydds SEMKO föreningen Närings- och teknikutvecklingsverket A21NUTEK
AppendixEnvironmentalrequirementsEnvironmental Labelling of Personal ComputersBrominated flame retardantsare present in printed circuit boards, cabling, casings, and housings, and are added to delay the spread offire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a computer casing can consist offlame-retardant substances. These are related to another group ofenvironmental toxins, PCBs, and are suspected of giving rise to similarharm, including reproductive damage in fish-eating birds andmammals. Flame retardants have been found in human blood, andresearchers fear that they can disturb fetus development. Bio-accumulative1TCO’95 demands require that plastic componentsweighing more than 25 grams must not contain flame retardants withorganically bound chlorine or bromine.Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, solder, andcapacitors. Lead damages the nervous system and in higher dosescauses lead poisoning. The relevant bio-accumulative TCO’95requirement permits the inclusion of lead, as no replacement has yetbeen developed.Cadmium is present in rechargeable batteries and in the color-generating layers of certain computer displays. Cadmium damagesthe nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant bio-accumulative TCO’95 requirement states that batteries may notcontain more than 25 ppm (parts per million) of cadmium. The color-generating layers of display screens must not contain any cadmium.Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches.Mercury damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. Therelevant bio-accumulative TCO’95 requirement states that batteriesmay not contain more than 25 ppm of mercury and that no mercury ispresent in any of the electrical or electronic components concernedwith the display unit.CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing printed circuit boardsand in the manufacture of expanded foam for packaging. CFCs breakdown ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in the atmosphere, causing increased reception on Earth of ultra-violet light withconsequent increased risks of skin cancer (malignant melanoma). Therelevant TCO’95 requirement: Neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be usedduring the manufacture of the product or its packaging.1Bio-accumulative means that the substance accumulates within living organisms.A22
