A. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONSThis appliance must be grounded. In the event  of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces therisk of electric shock by providing an escape wirefor the electric current. This appliance is equippedwith a cord having a grounding wire with agrounding plug. The plug must be plugged into anoutlet that is properly installed and grounded.WARNINGImproper grounding can result in a risk of electricshock. Consult a qualified electrician if thegrounding instructions are not completelyunderstood, or if doubt exists as to whether theappliance is properly grounded, and either:1. If it is necessary to use an extension cord, useonly a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-bladegrounding plug, and a 3-slot receptacle that willaccept the plug on the appliance. The markedrating of the extension cord shall be equal to orgreater than the electrical rating of theappliance, or2. Do not use an extension cord. If the powersupply cord is too short, have a qualifiedelectrician or serviceman install an outlet nearthe appliance.NOTE: 1. A short power-supply cord is provided to reducethe risks resulting from becoming entangled inor tripping over a longer cord.2. VOLTAGE WARNING The voltage used at the wall receptacle must bethe same as specified on the oven name platelocated on the back or on the side of the controlpanel of the oven. Use of a higher voltage isdangerous and may result in a fire or other type ofaccident causing oven damage. Low voltage willcause slow cooking. In case your microwave ovendoes not perform normally in spite of propervoltage, remove and reinsert the plug.D. PLACEMENT OF THE OVENYour microwave oven can be placed easily in yourkitchen, family room, or anywhere else in yourhome. Place the oven on a flat surface such as akitchen countertop or a specially designedmicrowave oven cart. Do not place oven above agas or electric range. Free air flow around theoven is important.E. DO NOT BLOCK AIR VENTSAll air vents should be kept clear during cooking.If air vents are covered during oven operation theoven may overheat. In this case, a sensitivethermal safety device automatically turns the ovenoff. The oven will be inoperable until it has cooledsufficiently.F. RADIO INTERFERENCE1. Microwave oven operation may interfere withTV or radio reception.2. When there is interference, it may be reducedor eliminated by taking the following measures:a. Clean the door and the sealing surfaces ofthe oven.b. Reorient the receiving antenna of radio ortelevision.c. Relocate the microwave oven in relation tothe TV or radio.d. Move the microwave oven away from thereceiver.e. Plug the microwave oven into a differentoutlet so that microwave oven and receiverare on different branch circuits.5INSTALLATIONEnsure proper groundexists before use
6OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATIONGETTING THE BESTRESULTS FROM YOURMICROWAVE OVENKeep an eye on things. The instructions inthis book have been formulated with greatcare, but your success in preparing themdepends, of course, on how much attention youpay to the food as it cooks. Always watch yourfood while it cooks. Your microwave oven isequipped with a light that turns on automaticallywhen the oven is in operation so that you cansee inside and check the progress of your recipe.Directions given in recipes to elevate, stir, andthe like should be thought of as the minimumsteps recommended. If the food seems to becooking unevenly, simply make the necessaryadjustments you think appropriate to correct theproblem.Factors affecting cooking times. Many factorsaffect cooking times. The temperature ofingredients used in a recipe makes a bigdifference in cooking times. For example, a cakemade with ice-cold butter, milk, and eggs willtake considerably longer to bake than one madewith ingredients that are at room temperature. All of the recipes in this book give a range ofcooking times. In general, you will find that thefood remains under-cooked at the lower end ofthe time range, and you may sometimes want tocook your food beyond the maximum time given,according to personal preference. The governingphilosophy of this book is that it is best for arecipe to be conservative in giving cooking times.While undercooked food may always be cookeda bit more, overcooked food is ruined for good.Some of the recipes, particularly those for bread,cakes, and custard, recommend that food beremoved from the oven when they are slightlyundercooked. This is not a mistake. Whenallowed to stand, usually covered, these foodswill continue to cook outside of the oven as theheat trapped within the outer portions of thefoods gradually travels inward. If the foods areleft in the oven until they are cooked all the waythrough, the outer portions will becomeovercooked or even burnt. As you gain experience in using your microwaveoven, you will become increasingly skillful inestimating both cooking and standing times forvarious foods.PRECAUTIONS*Be certain to place the front surface of the doorthree inches away or more from the countertopedge to avoid accidental tipping of the appliancein normal usage.*For the most accurate programming of theelectronic units, touch the center of each padsecurely. Do not touch several pads at one timeor touch between pads. A beep sound shouldbe heard with each touch when a pad istouched correctly.*Do not hit or strike the control with objects suchas silverware, utensils, etc. Breakage mayoccur.*Be careful when taking the cooking utensils outof the oven. Some dishes absorb heat from thecooked food and may be hot.*Do not rinse cooking utensils by immediatelyplacing them into water just after cooking. Thismay cause breakage. Allow the turntable tocool.*Use only specific glass utensils. See cookingutensils section in this manual.*Do not operate the oven empty. Either food orwater should always be in the oven duringoperation to absorb microwave energy.*Do not use your microwave oven to drynewspapers or clothes. They can catch fire.*Use only thermometers approved for microwaveoven cooking.*Be certain the turntable is in place when youoperate the oven.*Pierce the skin of potatoes, whole squash,apples, or any fruit or vegetable which has askin covering before cooking.*Never use your microwave oven to cook eggs inthe shell. Pressure can build up inside the shellcausing it to burst.*Do not pop popcorn, except in a microwave-safe container or commercial package designedespecially for microwave ovens. Never try to pop popcorn in a paper bag notdesigned for microwave oven use. Overcookingmay result in smoke and fire. Do not repopunpopped kernels. Do not reuse popcorn bags.
7OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATIONSPECIAL TECHNIQUES INMICROWAVE COOKINGBrowning: Meats and poultry that are cookedfifteen minutes or longer will brown lightly in theirown fat. Foods that are cooked for a shorter periodof time may be brushed with a browning sauce toachieve an appetizing color. The most commonlyused browning sauces are Worcestershire sauce,soy sauce, and barbecue sauce. Since relativelysmall amounts of browning sauces are added tofoods, the original flavor of recipes are not altered.Covering: A cover traps heat and steam andcauses food to cook more quickly. You may eitheruse a lid or microwave cling-film with a cornerfolded back to prevent splitting.Covering with waxed paper: Waxed papereffectively prevents spattering and helps foodretain some heat. Since it makes a looser coverthan a lid or cling-film, it allows the food to dry outslightly.Wrapping in waxed paper or paper towel:Sandwiches and many other foods containingprebaked bread should be wrapped prior tomicrowaving to prevent drying out.Arranging and spacing:Individual foods such asbaked potatoes, small cakes, and hors d’oeuvreswill heat more evenly if placed in the oven andequal distance apart, preferably in a circularpattern. Never stack foods on top of one another.Stirring: Stirring is one of the most important of allmicrowaving techniques. In conventional cooking,foods are stirred for the purpose of blending.Microwaved foods, however, are stirred in order tospread and redistribute heat. Always stir from theoutside towards the center as the outside foodheats first.Turning over: Large, tall foods such as roasts andwhole chickens should be turned so that the topand bottom will cook evenly. It is also a good ideato turn cut-up chicken and chops.Placing thicker portions near the edge: Sincemicrowaves are attracted to the outside  portion offoods, it makes sense to place thicker portions ofmeat, poultry and fish to the outer edge of thebaking dish. This way, thicker portions will receivethe most microwave energy and the foods will cookevenly. Elevating: Thick or dense foods are often elevatedso that microwaves can be absorbed by theunderside and center of the foods.Piercing: Foods enclosed in a shell, skin, ormembrane are likely to burst in the oven unlessthey are pierced prior to cooking. Such foodsinclude both yolks and whites of eggs, clams andoysters, and many whole vegetables and fruits.Testing if cooked: Because foods cook so quicklyin a microwave oven, it is necessary to test foodfrequently. Some foods are left in the microwaveuntil completely cooked, but most foods, includingmeats and poultry, are removed from the ovenwhile still slightly undercooked and allowed tofinish cooking during standing time. The internaltemperature of foods will rise between 5°F (3°C)and 15°F (8°C) during standing time.Standing time: Foods are often allowed to standfor 3 to 10 minutes after being removed from themicrowave oven. Usually the foods are coveredduring standing time to retain heat unless they aresupposed to be dry in texture (some cakes andbiscuits, for example). Standing allows foods tofinish cooking and also helps flavors to blend anddevelop.HOW FOOD CHARACTERISTICSAFFECT MICROWAVE COOKINGDensity of foods: Light, porous food like cakesand breads cook more quickly than heavy, densefoods such as roasts and casseroles. You musttake care when microwaving porous foods that theouter edges do not become dry and brittle.Height of foods: The upper portion of tall foods,particularly roasts, will cook more quickly than   thelower portion. Therefore, it is wise to turn tall foodsduring cooking, sometimes several times.Moisture content of foods: Since the heatgenerated from microwaves tends to evaporatemoisture, relatively dry foods such as roasts andsome vegetables should either be sprinkled withwater prior to cooking or covered to retain moisture.Bone and fat content of foods: Bones conductheat and fat cooks more quickly than meat.Therefore, care must be taken when cooking bonyor fatty cuts of meat that the meats do not cookunevenly and do not become overcooked.
8OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATIONCOOKING UTENSILSShape of foods: Microwaves penetrate only about1 inch (2.5cm) into foods; the interior portion ofthick foods is cooked as the heat generated on theoutside travels inward. In other words, only theouter edge of any foods is actually cooked bymicrowave energy; the rest is cooked byconvection. It follows then that the worst possibleshape for a food that is to be microwaved is a thickcube. The corners will burn long before the centeris even warm. Round thin and ring shaped foodscook most successfully in the microwave.Quantity of foods: The number of microwaves inyour oven remains constant regardless of howmuch food is being cooked. Therefore, the morefood you place in the oven, the longer the cookingtime. Remember to decrease cooking times by atleast one-third when halving a recipe. MICROWAVE-SAFE UTENSILS Never use metal or metal-trimmed utensils inyour microwave oven: Microwaves cannotpenetrate metal. They will bounce off any metalobject in the oven and cause arcing, an alarmingphenomenon that resembles lightening. Most heat-resistant non-metallic cooking utensilsare safe for use in your microwave oven. However,some may contain materials that render themunsuitable as microwave cookware. If you haveany doubts about a particular utensil, there's asimple way to find out if it can be used in yourmicrowave oven.Testing utensils for microwave use: Place theutensil in question next to a glass bowl filled withwater in the microwave oven. Microwave at powerHIGH for 1 minute. If the water heats up but theutensil remains cool to the touch, the utensil ismicrowave-safe. However, if the water does notchange temperature but the utensil becomeswarm, microwaves are being absorbed by theutensil and it is not safe for use in the microwaveoven. You probably have many items on hand inyour kitchen that can be used as cookingequipment in your microwave oven. Just readthrough the following checklist.1. Dinner plates: Many kinds of dinner-ware aremicrowave-safe. If in doubt consult themanufacturer's literature or perform the microwavetest, above.2. Glassware: Glassware that is heat-resistant ismicrowave-safe. This includes all brands of oven-tempered glass cookware. However, do not usedelicate glassware, such as tumbler or wineglasses, as these might shatter as the food warms.3. Paper: Paper plates and containers areconvenient and safe to use in your microwaveoven, provided the cooking time is short andfoods to be cooked are low in fat and moisture.Paper towels are also very useful for wrappingfoods and for lining baking trays in which greasyfoods, such as bacon, are cooked. In general,avoid colored paper products as the color may run. 4. Plastic storage containers: These can be usedto hold foods that are to be quickly reheated.However, they should not be used to hold foodsthat will need considerable time in the oven as hotfoods will eventually warp or melt plasticcontainers.5. Plastic cooking bags: These are microwave-safe provided they are specially made for cooking.However, be sure to make a slit in the bag sothat steam can escape. Never use ordinary plasticbags for cooking in your microwave oven, as theywill melt and rupture.6. Plastic microwave cookware: A variety ofshapes and sizes of microwave cookware isavailable. For the most part, you can probably cookwith items you already have on hand rather thaninvesting in new kitchen equipment.7. Pottery, stoneware, and ceramic:Containers made of these materials are usuallyfine for use in your microwave oven, but theyshould be tested to be sure.CAUTION: SOME ITEMS ARE NOTINTENDED FOR COOKING, INCLUDINGSOME STONEWARE AND ITEMS WITHHIGH IRON OR LEAD CONTENTS.

Please follow these instructionscarefully.1. Place the food in a suitable cooking utensil. Openthe microwave oven door and place the utensil inthe center of the oven on the glass tray.2. Close the oven door.3. Select the cooking power level by turning thePOWER SELECT KNOB For your information, the defrost power levelutilizes 33% of the oven’s total available powerwhile the cook power level utilizes 100% of theoven’s total available power. 4. Turn the TIMER KNOB clockwise to set the cooking time.NOTE : The oven starts as soon as the KNOB is turned. Werecommend turning the KNOB past the time you wantand then turn back to the desired setting.4. When the TIMER reaches OFF, the signalsounds and the oven will automatically shut off.5. Open the door and remove the food from theoven.6. 11To heat or reheat successfully in the microwave, it is important to follow several guidelines. Measure theamount of food in order to determine the time needed to reheat. Arrange the food in a circular pattern forbest results. Room temperature food will heat faster than refrigerated food. Canned foods should be takenout of the can and placed in a microwavable container. The food will be heated more evenly if coveredwith a microwavable lid or plastic wrap, vented. Remove cover carefully to prevent steam burns.
