Always operate this equipment from a 120 VAC,60 Hz power source only. 25. Always sit approximately 10 –25 feet away from the TV and as directly in front of it as possible.The picture can appear dull if you sit too far to the left or right of the TV,or if sunlight or room lights reflect on the screen.Turn the TV off to check for reflections on the screen,and then remove the source of reflections while viewing the TV. 28. Always unplug the TV before cleaning.Never use liquid or aerosol cleaners. 29. WARNING:RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! Never spill liquids or push objects of any kind into the TV cabinet slots. 30. [This item applies to projection TVs only. If the air temperature rises suddenly (for example,when the TV is first delivered),condensation may form on the lenses.This can make the picture appear distorted or the color appear faded.If this happens,turn off the TV for 6 to 7 hours to allow the condensation to evaporate. 31. For added protection of your TV from lightning and power surges,always unplug the power cord and disconnect the antenna from the TV if you leave the TV unattended or unused for long periods of time. 32. During normal use,the TV may make occasional snapping or popping sounds.This is normal,especially when the unit is being turned on or off.If these sounds become frequent or continuous,unplug the power cord and contact a Toshiba Authorized Service Center. Service 33. WARNING:RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! Never attempt to service the TV yourself.Opening and removing the covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.Refer all servicing to a Toshiba Authorized Service Center. 34. If you have the TV serviced: Ask the service technician to use only replacement parts specified by the manufacturer. Upon completion of service,ask the service technician to perform routine safety checks to determine that the TV is in safe operating condition. 35. When the TV reaches the end of its useful life,ask a qualified service technician to properly dispose of the TV. Precautions u When shipping the unit, the original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy. For maximum protection, repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory. u Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect spray, near the unit. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact the unit for prolonged period. They will leave marks on the finish. u The top and rear panels of the unit may become warm after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction. u When the unit is not in use, be sure to remove any discs and turn off the power. u The unit may not function properly if you do not use it for a long period of time. It is recommended that you turn the unit on occasionally to prevent potential problems in operation. Notes on locating u Place the unit on a level surface. Do not use it on a shaky or unstable surface such as a wobbling table or inclined stand. The loaded disc may become disaligned and damage the unit. u When you place this unit near a TV, radio, or VCR, the playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted. In this case, place the unit away from the TV, radio, or VCR. Notes on moisture condensation Moisture condensation damages the unit. Please read the following carefully. Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the unit. le of mo Examp ensat isture ion! cond Optical pick-up lens u Moisture condensation may occur in the following cases. v When you bring the unit directly from a cold place to a warm place. v When you use the unit in a room where you just turned on the heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner directly hits the unit. v In summer, when you use the unit in a hot and humid place just after you move the unit from an air conditioned room. v When you use the unit in a humid place. Notes on cleaning Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. v For stubborn dirt, soak the cloth in a weak detergent solution, wring well and wipe. Use a dry cloth to wipe it dry. Do not use any type of solvent, such as thinner and benzine, as they may damage the surface of the unit. v If you use a chemical saturated cloth to clean the unit, follow that product’s instructions. To obtain a clear picture The unit is a high technology, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down, the picture quality will deteriorate. To obtain a clear picture, we recommend regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) every 1,000 hours of use depending on the operating environment. u Do not use the unit when moisture condensation has occurred. If you use the unit in such a situation, it may damage discs and internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the unit to the wall outlet, turn on the unit, and leave it for two or three hours. After two or three hours, the unit will have warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the unit connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom occur. Wa it! Normally, DVD video discs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. Video CDs and Audio CDs are divided into tracks. Wipe the disc from the center outwards with a soft cloth. Always keep the disc clean. v If you cannot wipe off the dust with a soft cloth, wipe the disc lightly with a slightly moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth. v Do not use any type of solvent such as thinner, benzine, commercially available cleaners or antistatic spray for vinyl LPs. It may damage the disc. On storing discs v Do not store discs in a place subject to direct sunlight or near heat sources. v Do not store discs in places subject to moisture and dust such as a bathroom or near a humidifier. v Store discs vertically in a case. Stacking or placing objects on discs outside of their case may cause warping. Each title, chapter or track is assigned a number, which is called “title number”, “chapter number” or “track number” respectively. There may be discs that do not have these numbers. Notes • If an MP3 or JPEG file CD is created using an incorrect method, the player may not be able to recognize it. If this happens, try reburning another CD after setting up the disc writing parameters correctly on your PC. • Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby” and the double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories. Introduction This DVD player is designed and manufactured for playback of region “1” encoded DVD software. The region code on the labels of some DVD discs indicates which type of player can play those discs. This unit can play only DVD discs labeled “1” or “ALL”. If you try to play any other discs, the message “Check Regional Code” will appear on the TV screen. Some DVD discs may not have a region code label even though their playback is prohibited by area limits. Playable discs This unit can play the following discs. (PBC is the abbreviation of Playback Control.) You can enjoy two playback variations depending on types of discs. • Video CD not equipped with PBC function (Version 1.1) Sound and movie can be played on this DVD in the same way as an audio CD. • Video CD equipped with PBC function (Version 2.0) In addition to operation of a Video CD not equipped with the PBC function, you can enjoy playback of interactive software with search function by using the menu displayed on the TV screen (Menu Playback). Some of the functions described in this owner’s manual may not work with some discs. About this owner’s manual This owner’s manual explains the basic instructions of this unit. Some DVD video discs are produced in a manner that allows specific or limited operation during playback. As such, the unit may not respond to all operating commands. This is not a defect in the unit. Refer to instruction notes of discs. “ ” may appear on the TV screen during operation. A“ ” means that the operation is not permitted by the unit or the disc. For example, sometimes it is unable to stop the playback of copyright message of the disc when the STOP button is pressed. Alternatively, the “ ” may also indicate that the feature is not available for the disc. Install two “AAA” batteries (supplied), paying attention to the polarity diagram in the battery compartment. Replace the compartment cover. Operation • Aim the remote control at the remote sensor and press control buttons to operate. • Operate the remote control within 30° angle on either side of the remote sensor, up to a distance of approx. 7meters (Approx. 21 feet). Be sure to follow the correct polarity when installing the batteries as indicated in the battery compartment. Reversed batteries may cause damage to the device. 3. Do not mix different types of batteries together (e.g. Alkaline and Carbon-zinc) or old batteries with fresh ones. 4. If the device is not to be used for a long period of time, remove the batteries to prevent damage or injury from possible battery leakage. 5. Do not try to recharge batteries not intended to be recharged; they can overheat and rupture (follow battery manufacturer’s directions). 6. Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area. Do not throw batteries into a fire. PC Setup - After setup, be sure to select RGB-PC source on TV. TV Back Panel 1. Set the monitor output resolution on the PC before connecting to the TV. 2. Connect the TV to the PC with the PC cable. 3. Connect the PC audio output to the TV's PC SOUND input. Viewing Setup 1. Turn on the PC. 2. Use the INPUT SELECT button on the remote control to select PC. For optimum picture quality, use standard XGA (1024x768) computer output at a 60Hz refresh rate. Using other formats (VGA, SVGA, etc.) or refresh rates may result in reduced picture quality. If the message “Out of range” appears on the screen, adjust the PC output to a format listed in the ‘Displayable Monitor Output Format Specifications' chart above. c. DPM (Display Power Management) mode If the PC goes to power saving mode, the monitor automatically switches to DPM mode. Plug the AC power cord into the TV, then plug the AC power cord into a power outlet. Press the POWER button located on the TV to turn on the TV. The power indicator will light. After viewing, press the POWER button on the remote control. The TV reverts to standby mode • In standby mode, press the POWER, CHANNEL, INPUT SELECT or number button on the remote control to turn the TV on. Select the viewing source by pressing INPUT SELECT repeatedly. TV channel PC Video Component S-video DVD Note: See page 22 if you have not auto programmed the TV to receive channels in your local broadcast area. Note: If you want to turn the TV off, press the POWER button located on the remote control. If you intend to be away on vacation, disconnect the power plug from the wall power outlet. SET UP D / E, F / G Menu Language Selection Press the G button and then use D / E button to select your desired language. From this point on, the on-screen menus will be shown in the language of your choice. Press the G button and then use D / E button to select Language. Press the SET UP button to save and return to TV viewing. TV Operation Press the SET UP button and then use D / E button to select the Special menu. Lock Options Lock options Parental Control can be used to block specific channels, ratings and other viewing sources. V-Chip rating and categories Rating guidelines are provided by broadcast stations. Most television programs and television movies can be blocked by TV Rating and/or Individual Categories. Movies that have been shown at the theaters or direct-to-video movies use the Movie Rating System (MPAA) only. For Movies previously shown in theaters : Movie Ratings : • Unblocked • G and Above (general audience) • PG and Above (parental guidance suggested) • PG-13 and Above (13 years and older) • R and above (restricted) • NC-17 and Above (18 years and older) •X (adult) If you set PG-13 and Above : G and PG movies will be available , PG-13, R, NC-17 and X will be blocked.
