Follow the instructions on page 37.40The power supply is plugged into an outlet near thekeypad. It provides electrical power to the keypad. Thisshould not be unplugged. If you should notice that the power supply isunplugged, plug it back in immediately. One sensor is placed in or on the frame and body of eachdoor or window that is protected. If the door or window isopened while the system is on, an alarm sounds. Analarm signal is sent to the Brink’s Monitoring Center.Depending on the size and configuration of your home, one or more grid extenders will be installed. The gridextender is mounted in an out-of-the-way location — forexample, behind a sofa. One grid extender in your homemust be connected to a RJ31X. This will be done by yourinstaller. The grid extender is the backbone of your wirelesssecurity network. It communicates with all of the otherparts and receives information from the system’s sensorsand keypad. It also contains a battery that allows thesystem to operate during a power failure. When an alarmoccurs, the grid extender sends a message over thetelephone line to the Brink’s Monitoring Center.Should you need to unplug the grid extender, you willnotice it is screwed into the wall outlet. To remove the gridextender, simply unscrew and then unplug. To re-attach,plug the grid extender into the outlet and then reaffix thescrew to secure the grid extender to the outlet.5Power SupplyDoor/ Window SensorsGrid ExtenderBrinksKeyPadPrinterSprd.2.22.06 2/22/06 3:06 PM Page 22
This device, located near the grid extender, connects thegrid extender to the telephone line in your home. Thismakes it possible for your security system to send alarmsignals over the telephone lines to the Brink’s MonitoringCenter.Do not remove the grid extender telephone cable fromthe jack unless a Brink’s representative or this manualinstructs you to do so.The highly visible sign and stickers warn potentialintruders that your home is protected by a Brink’s HomeSecurity system. You will be provided with one sign andseveral stickers.Optional EquipmentThis device detects smoke and dangerously hightemperatures. It is mounted in a central location of thehouse, on the ceiling. This sensor is mounted on the wall, inside your home. Thesensor can detect when someone is moving within its fieldof view. If the system is on at the time a person isdetected, the system sends an alarm signal to the Brink’sMonitoring Center. This device detects when the temperature near the sensoris dangerously high. It is mounted in a central location ofthe house, on the ceiling.6Telephone Jack(RJ31X)Yard Sign and Window StickersSmoke/Heat DetectorMotion DetectorHeat Sensor2. Review the escape plan with everyone who lives in your home andpractice escape procedures.3. To increase the time you will have to escape a fire, sleep with yourbedroom door closed. If you suspect a fire, touch the door. Do notopen the door if it feels hot. If it does not, brace your shoulderagainst the door and open it slowly. Be ready to slam the door ifsmoke or heat rush in. Leave the building quickly and call the firedepartment from a neighbor’s telephone, or from your cellulartelephone. In the event of a fire, the best way to ensure the safety of your family is to getthe earliest possible warning. This is best achieved by installing fire detectionequipment in all rooms and areas of the house. This includes:• a smoke detector installed outside of each of the bedrooms•heat or smoke detectors in the living room, dining room, kitchen, hallways, attic, furnace room, closets, utility and storage rooms, basement, and garage. This equipment should be installed in accordance with the National FireProtection Association’s Standard 72.For additional information, write:National Fire Protection Association1 Battery March ParkQuincy, MA 02269California residents may also write:California State Fire Marshal7171 Bowling Drive, Suite 600Sacramento, CA 9582339BrinksKeyPadPrinterSprd.2.22.06 2/22/06 3:06 PM Page 24
Setting the ClockEmergency Evacuation PlansAn emergency evacuation plan helps to ensure that you and your familyescape from your home safely in the event of a fire. Use these guidelinesfrom the National Fire Protection Association to prepare your own emergencyevacuation plan.1. Draw up a floor plan of your building, like the one shown. Showany part of the building—the windows, doors, rooftops—that can beused as an escape route.Find at least two ways to escape from each room. One will be thedoor leading to the normal exit. Another may be a window thatopens easily. If the window is high off the ground, you may need toinstall an escape ladder nearby. Identify a place outdoors whereeveryone is to meet after leaving the building.38The numeric display of your keypad may show thetime of day. You do not need to set the clock; it adjustsitself automatically every few months. While the system is making this short call, you will notbe able to use your telephone. This small detector is mounted near any large expanse ofglass (windows or doors) in your home. It identifies thesound of breaking glass. The key fob is a small remote-control device for thesecurity system.
