1Wireless 11b PCI Card User’s Guide1. introduction1.1 What is Wireless 11b PCI CardMSI’s Wireless 11b PCI Card is a cost effective solutionfor desktop PC. It complies with IEEE 802.11b standardand provides 11 Mbps data rate. The Wireless 11b PCICard enables any desktop PC to share a broadbandconnection, files and printers over the network withoutthe time and expense of Ethernet cabling. In addition, with 64-/128-bit Privacy Key and IEEE 802.11i TKP, net-work connection is highly secured.Based on direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) tech-nology operating in the 2.4 GHz Industrial, Science andMedical band, the Wireless 11b PCI Card complies withWiFi, ensuring interoperability with other compliant wire-less LAN products.
2Wireless 11b PCI Card User’s Guide1.2 How Wireless 11b PCI Card worksAd-hoc Networking Mode --- An Ad-hoc (or"spontaneous") network is a local area network or othersmall network, especially one with wireless or temporaryplug-in connections, in which some of the network de-vices are part of the network only for the duration of acommunications session. Users on the network can sharefiles, print to a shared printer, and access the Internetwith a shared modem. In this kind of network, new de-vices can be quickly added; however, users can only com-municate with other wireless LAN computers that are inthe wireless LAN workgroup, and are within range.wirelessDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICardCable Modem / DSLInternetDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICard
3Wireless 11b PCI Card User’s GuideInfrastructure Networking Mode--- Infrastructure net-working differs from Ad-hoc networking is that it includesan Access Point. In an Infrastructure networking, theAccess Point can manage the bandwidth to maximizebandwidth utilization. Additionally, the Access Point ena-bles users on a wireless LAN to access an existing wirednetwork, allowing wireless users to take advantage of thewired networks resources, such as Internet, email, filetransfer, and printer sharing. The scale and range of theInfrastructure networking are larger and wider than that ofthe Ad-hoc networking.Cable Modem / DSLInternetwirelesswirelesswireless wirelessAccessPointRouterDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICardDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICardDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICardDesktop PC withWireless 11b PCICard
