Tape library – bar codes on digital cassettes The manufacturer needed to integrate a bar code scanner into their automated media storage equipment. Used for inventory control purposes, the bar code scanner would be mounted onto the robotic arm and would scan the bar codes on each of the media tapes as they were stored and retrieved by the system. The symbol Code Types: Code I28, 10 mil black and white bar code printed onto a narrow label attached to the end of the cassette. Application: The manufacturer mounts the bar code scanner onto a robotic arm to read the bar codes on the ends of the cassettes before the item is stored or retrieved. Code 128 Microscan Training Materials ©Microscan Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. The installation Since the bar code scanner was mounted onto the robotic arm, it needed to be light enough that it would not slow down the robotic arm or limit its functionality in anyway. In addition to meeting the maximum weight requirements, the MS-3’s small size allowed it to easily fit onto the arm. The MS-3 also provided the rugged packaging required to withstand high acceleration. Microscan Training Materials ©Microscan Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Why the MS-3 Laser Scanner The MS-3 was selected because it offered the following features: • Small size • Light weight • Wide scan width Microscan Training Materials ©Microscan Systems, Inc. The bottom line Since the MS-3 provided the manufacturer with a lot of mounting flexibility and software functionality, they were able to easily integrate it into their existing system. Minimal programming and engineering time was required, lowering the manufacturer’s upfront investment. Exceptional read rate performance from the scanner, provided the manufacturer with a total low cost ownership down the road, after the media storage system was installed at their customer sites.
