IntroductionThe Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset (HS-12W) allows you to make and receive phone calls, and listen to FM radio and music tracks or other audio files.Read this user guide carefully before using the headset. Read also the user guide for your phone, which provides important safety and maintenance information. Keep the headset out of reach of small children.■RDS (radio data system)The FM radio of the headset supports the RDS (radio data system) technology. The RDS feature allows you to view the name of the selected radio channel on the headset display. The RDS feature also keeps the headset automatically tuned into the selected radio channel as long as the channel is available in your location. The RDS feature may not work with all radio channels or in all countries.■Bluetooth wireless technologyThe HS-12W headset can be connected to a compatible mobile phone or other device that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. This technology makes it possible to connect compatible communication devices without cables. A Bluetooth connection does not require that the phone and the headset be in line of sight, but both devices should be within 10 meters of each other. Connections can be subject to interference from obstructions, such as walls, or other electronic devices.The HS-12W headset is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 1.2 supporting the following profiles: Headset Profile 1.1, Handsfree Profile 1.0, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) 1.0, Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.0, General Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP) 1.0. Get startedThe headset contains the following parts:• Display (1)• Call/play key (2)• Volume down key (3)• Volume up key (4)• Power key (5)• Stop key (6)• Strap clip (7) to attach the strap to your clothing. The strap clip can be removed.• Clip (8) to attach the headset to your clothing.• Key lock switch (9)• Music key (10)• Fast forward key (11)• Rewind key (12)• Strap lock (13) to fasten the neck strap.• Microphone (14) to pick up your voice. You can press the key on the microphone to answer or end a call, or to play a music track.• Earphones (15) to relay the caller's voice and the sounds from the radio or audio player.Before you can start to use the headset, you must charge the battery, and pair the headset with a compatible phone.Note: Parts of the headset are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to the headset, and persons with a hearing aid or a pacemaker should not hold the headset to the ear with the hearing aid or close to the pacemaker. Get started7■Charge the batteryThis headset has an internal, nonremovable, rechargeable battery. Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device as you may damage the headset.The headset HS-12W is intended for use with the following chargers: AC-1, ACP-12, and LCH-12.Warning: Use only chargers approved by Nokia for use with this particular enhancement. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous.1. Connect the charger cable to the headset.2. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. The battery indicator scrolls on the display during charging. Charging the battery fully may take up to 2 hours depending on the charger.3. When the battery is fully charged, the battery indicator stops scrolling, and and a note are displayed. Disconnect the charger from the wall outlet and the headset. When you disconnect the power cord of the charger, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord.The fully charged battery has power for up to 8 hours of talk-time or up to 200 hours of standby time. However, the talk and standby times may vary when used with different mobile phones, other Bluetooth enabled-products, usage settings, usage style, and environments.When the battery is running out, the headset beeps and displays a note and .■Switch the headset on or offTo switch the headset on, press and hold the power key. Get started8■Pair the headset with a compatible phone1. Switch on your phone and the headset.2. Activate the Bluetooth feature on the phone, and set the phone to search for Bluetooth devices. See the user guide of your phone for instructions.3. Select the headset (Nokia HS-12W) from the list of found devices.4. Enter the passcode 0000 to pair and connect the headset to your phone. In some phones you may need to make the connection separately after pairing. See the user guide of your phone for details. You only need to pair the headset with your phone once.5. If the pairing was successful, appears on the display, and you can start to use the headset.You can set your phone to connect with the headset automatically when the headset is switched on. To do this in Nokia phones, change your paired device settings in the Bluetooth menu.Disconnect the headset from the phoneTo disconnect the headset from your phone, for example, to connect the phone to another Bluetooth device, switch off the headset, disconnect the headset in the Bluetooth menu of your phone, or move the headset more than 10 meters away from the phone.When you disconnect the headset from your phone, disappears from the display.You do not need to delete the pairing with the headset to disconnect it.Reconnect the headsetIf you want to reconnect the paired headset to your phone, switch on the headset and make the connection in the Bluetooth menu of your phone, or press and hold the call/play key of the headset until Connecting is shown on the headset display.Use the headset with several phonesThe headset can be paired with up to eight phones but connected to only one phone at a time. If the headset is switched on within 10 meters of several paired phones, the headset tries to connect to the default phone.If the headset cannot connect to the default phone, the headset tries to connect to the last used phone. Operation103. Operation■Carry the headset with youYou can attach the headset to your clothing or belt. You can also wear the headset around your neck using the neck strap.The headset is supplied with three pairs of ear pads. Attach the pads to the earphones for enhanced audio quality.Warning: When using the stereo headset your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the stereo headset where it can endanger your safety. ■Adjust the earpiece volumePress the volume up or volume down key to adjust the earpiece volume. To adjust the volume quickly, press and hold either key. The volume level is shown on the display.■Call handlingMake a callWhen the headset is connected to your phone, make a call by using your phone in the normal way.To redial the last dialed number, press the call/play key twice, if your phone supports the use of this feature with the headset.To make a call by voice dialing, press and hold the call/play key until appears on the display. Say the voice tag. The phone dials the related phone number. If the caller’s name is unknown, the caller’s number or Call is shown instead.To answer a call, press the call/play key, press the key on the microphone, or use the phone keys. If the automatic answer function is set on in your phone, the phone automatically answers the call after one ring.If you want to reject the call, press the call/play key twice.If you receive a new call during a call, flashes on the display. To end the current call and answer the new call, press the call/play key twice.End a callTo end a call, press the call/play key, press the key on the microphone, or use the phone keys.Mute or unmute the microphoneTo mute or unmute the microphone during a call, press the power key briefly.Switch the call between headset and phoneTo switch the call between the headset and a compatible Nokia phone, press and hold the call/play key of the headset for 2 seconds, or use the respective function in your phone.■Listen to the audio playerYou can listen to the audio player of your phone or a compatible music playing device. If you receive a call when listening to the player, the player is paused until the call ends.Warning: Listen to music at a moderate level. Continuous exposure to high volume may damage your hearing. If your phone does not support this profile, start the playing in the audio player function on your phone.To play a specific track, select it in the audio player of your phone. See the user guide of your phone for details.To select the next track, press the fast forward key. To select the previous track, press the rewind key once if the player is stopped or twice if a track is playing.To pause the audio player, press the stop key. To restart it, press the call/play key. To stop the audio player, press the stop key twice.To listen to the radio, press the music key.■Listen to the radioThe FM radio of the headset can be used even without connecting the headset to a phone.If you receive a call while listening to the radio, the radio is muted until the call ends.To switch on the radio when the headset is on, press the music key twice, if your phone supports the General Audio/Video Distribution profile. If your phone does not support this profile or the headset is not connected to a phone, press the music key once. When the radio is on, is shown on the headset display.To search for radio channels, press and hold the fast forward or rewind key for a few seconds. To stop searching for new channels, press the stop key. To fine tune a found channel, press the fast forward or rewind key. Operation13■Lock or unlock the keysSlide the key lock switch towards the music key to lock or towards the top of the headset to unlock the headset keys. A note and are shown on the display. When the keys are locked, all key presses are ignored. If you receive a call, the keys are unlocked until you end the call.■View the timeWhen the headset is connected to a compatible phone, the headset receives the current time from the phone and shows it in the standby mode, if your Nokia phone supports the transfer of this information into the headset. (In the standby mode, the headset is switched on but it is not used.) To adjust the time, use the clock function in your phone.■See missed calls and received messagesWhen you miss a call, is shown on the headset display. indicates that you have at least one unread text or multimedia message that you can view on the phone.You are notified of new messages and missed calls only if your Nokia phone supports the transfer of this information into the headset.■Reset the headsetYou can reset the headset to clear all settings. Press and hold the power key and the volume up key for 10 seconds. Battery information144. Battery informationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. Recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device.Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave the device connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten the battery lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. Temperature extremes can affect the ability of your battery to charge.Never use any battery or charger that is damaged.Leaving the device in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily, even when the battery is fully charged. The suggestions below will help you protect your warranty coverage.• Keep all accessories and enhancements out of the reach of small children.• Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, allow the device to dry completely before replacing it.• Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device. Nokia recommends to take it to the nearest authorized service facility for replacement of the battery.• Do not use or store the device in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged.• Do not store the device in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics.• Do not store the device in cold areas. When the device returns to its normal temperature, moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards.• Do not attempt to open the device other than as instructed in this guide.• Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics.• Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the device.• Do not paint the device.
