3. Insert the battery.4. To replace the cover,direct the top lockingcatch toward its slotfirst and then pressdown until the coverlocks into place.Switch the device on1. Press and hold the power key.2. If the device asks for a PIN codeor lock code, enter it, and pressthe left selection key. Thefactory setting for the lockcode is 12345.Your device has internalantennas.Note: Your device may haveinternal and external antennas. As with any radiotransmitting device, avoid touching the antennaunnecessarily when the antenna is in use. Contactwith such an antenna affects the communicationquality, may cause the device to operate at a higherpower level than otherwise needed and may reducethe battery life.1 — Bluetooth antenna and GPS receiver3 — Cellular antennaCharge the battery1. Connect a compatiblecharger to a walloutlet.2. Connect the powercord to the device. Ifthe battery iscompletelydischarged, it maytake a while before the charging indicator startsscrolling.3. SettingsYour device normally has MMS, GPRS, streaming, andmobile internet settings automatically configuredin the device, based upon your network serviceprovider information. You may have settings fromyour service providers already installed in yourdevice, or you may receive or request the settingsfrom the network service providers as a specialmessage.You can change the general settings in your device,such as language, standby mode, display, andkeypad lock settings. See "Generalsettings", p. 138.Access codesIf you forget any of the access codes, contact yourservice provider.●Personal identification number (PIN) code — Thiscode protects your SIM card againstunauthorised use. The PIN code (4 to 8 digits) isusually supplied with the SIM card. After threeconsecutive incorrect PIN code entries, the codeis blocked, and you need the PUK code to unblockit.●PIN2 code — This code (4 to 8 digits) is suppliedwith some SIM cards, and is required to accesssome functions in your device.●Lock code (also known as security code) — Thiscode (5 digits) can be used to lock the device toavoid unauthorised use. The factory setting forthe lock code is 12345. To avoid unauthoriseduse of your device, change the lock code. Keepthe new code secret and in a safe place separatefrom your device. Try entering the code onlyonce, if you forget the code. If the code youentered is not correct, contact a Nokia Care pointor your service provider for further instructions.●Personal unblocking key (PUK) code and PUK2code — These codes (8 digits) are required tochange a blocked PIN code or PIN2 code,respectively. If the codes are not supplied withthe SIM card, contact the operator whose SIMcard is in your device.Prolong battery lifeMany features in your device increase the demandon battery power and reduce the battery life time.To save battery power, note the following:●Features that use Bluetooth technology, orallowing such features to run in the backgroundwhile using other features, increase the demandon battery power. The type of content that can be transferred dependson the model of the device from which you want totransfer content. Whenyour device is switched on without a SIM card, theoffline profile is automatically activated.Transfer content for the first time1. To retrieve data from the other device for thefirst time, on your device, select Switch in theWelcome application, or press , and selectTools > Utilities > Switch.2. Select the connection type you want to use totransfer the data. Both devices must support theselected connection type.3. If you select Bluetooth, connect the two devices.To have your device search for devices withBluetooth connectivity, select Continue. Selectthe device from which you want to transfercontent. You are asked to enter a code on yourdevice. Enter a code (1-16-digits), and selectOK. Enter the same code on the other device, andselect OK. The devices are now paired. A packet data connection is active in a part of thenetwork that supports EGPRS (network service). indicates the connection is on hold and that aconnection is available. The icons indicate thatEGPRS is available in the network, but your device isnot necessarily using EGPRS in the data transfer. Bluetooth connectivity is on. See "Bluetoothconnectivity", p. 91. Data is being transmitted using Bluetoothconnectivity. When the indicator is blinking, yourdevice is trying to connect with another device. A USB connection is active. Synchronisation is in progress.ShortcutsWhen in the menus, instead of using the scroll key,you can use the number keys, #, and * to quicklyaccess the applications. Offline profileTo activate the offline profile, press the power keybriefly, and select Offline. Or, press , and selectTools > Profiles > Offline.The offline profile lets you use the device withoutconnecting to the wireless network. When youactivate the offline profile, the connection to thewireless network is turned off, as indicated by inthe signal strength indicator area. All wireless RFsignals to and from the device are prevented. If youtry to send messages, they are placed in the outboxto be sent later.When the offline profile is active, you can use yourdevice without a SIM card.Important: In the offline profile you cannotmake or receive any calls, or use other features thatrequire cellular network coverage. Calls may still bepossible to the official emergency numberprogrammed into your device. To make calls, youmust first activate the phone function by changingprofiles. If the device has been locked, enter the lockcode.To leave the offline profile, press the power keybriefly, and select another profile. Most of the personalisation options, such aschanging the font size, can be accessed through thedevice settings. Audio themesIn Audio themes, you can select a sound schemesuch as 'Orchestral' to cover all device events, suchas calling, battery low, and mechanical events. Thesounds can be tones, synthesised voice tags, or acombination of both.Select the sound scheme you want to use in Activeaudio theme. Note that activating an audio themechanges all your previous sound settings. If youwant to return to using the default tones, selectaudio theme 'Nokia'.You can change the sounds for different eventsindividually by selecting one of the sound groups,for example, Menu events.To add 3-D effects to the audio theme, selectOptions > 3-D ringing tones. See "3-Dtones", p. 33.To change the language that is used for thesynthesised voice tag, select Options > Set Speechlanguage.If you have changed the tones of individual events,you can save the theme by selecting Options >Save theme.Set sounds for eventsTo set the sound of an individual event to silent,open an event group, select the event, and changeit to Silent.To set a synthesised voice tag as the sound for anevent, open an event group, select the event, andSpeech. To change the ringing tone, selectRinging tone and the desired ringing tone.To change the 3-D effect that is applied to theringing tone, select Sound trajectory and thedesired effect.To modify the effect, select from the followingsettings:●Trajectory speed — Scroll left or right to adjustthe speed at which sound moves from onedirection to another. This setting is not availablefor all ringing tones.●Reverberation — Select the type of echo.To listen to the ringing tone with the 3-D effect,select Options > Play tone. Positioning (GPS)You can use applications such as Maps and GPS datato find out your location, or measure distances andcoordinates. These applications require a GPSconnection.About GPSThe Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwideradio navigation system that includes 24 satellitesand their ground stations that monitor theoperation of the satellites. Your device has aninternal GPS receiver.A GPS terminal receives low-power radio signalsfrom the satellites and measures the travel time ofthe signals. From the travel time, the GPS receivercan calculate its location to the accuracy of metres.The coordinates in the GPS are expressed in degreesand decimal degrees format using the internationalWGS-84 coordinate system.The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated bythe government of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by the UnitedStates government and is subject to change withthe United States Department of Defense civil GPSpolicy and the Federal Radionavigation Plan.Accuracy can also be affected by poor satellitegeometry. Availability and quality of GPS signalsmay be affected by your location, buildings, naturalobstacles, and weather conditions. The GPS receivershould only be used outdoors to allow reception ofGPS signals.Any GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely onlocation data from the GPS receiver and cellularradio networks for positioning or navigation.To enable or disable different positioning methods,such as Bluetooth GPS, press , and select Tools >Settings > General > Positioning >Positioning methods.Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Your device also supports Assisted GPS (A-GPS).A-GPS is a network service.Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistancedata over a packet data connection, which assists incalculating the coordinates of your current location35Positioning (GPS)
when your device is receiving signals fromsatellites.When you activate A-GPS, your device receivesuseful satellite information from an assistance dataserver over the cellular network. With the help ofassisted data, your device can obtain the GPSposition faster.Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPSservice, if no service provider-specific A-GPS settingsare available. The assistance data is retrieved fromthe Nokia A-GPS service server only when needed.You must have an internet access point defined inthe device to retrieve assistance data from theNokia A-GPS service over a packet data connection.To define an access point for A-GPS, press , andselect Tools > Settings > General >Positioning > Positioning server > Accesspoint. Only a packet data internet access point canbe used. Your device asks for the internet accesspoint when GPS is used for the first time.Hold your device correctlyThe GPS receiver is located in the top of the device.When using the receiver, from an upright position,move the device to an angle of about 45 degrees,with an unobstructed view of the sky.Establishing a GPSconnection maytake from a coupleof seconds to tensof minutes.Establishing a GPSconnection in thecar, in badweatherconditions, or in achallenging geographical environment may takelonger.The GPS receiver draws its power from the devicebattery. Using the GPS receiver may drain thebattery faster.Tips on creating a GPSconnectionIf your device cannot find the satellite signal,consider the following:●If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a bettersignal.●If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.36Positioning (GPS)
●Ensure thatyour hand doesnot cover theGPS antenna ofyour device.See "Hold yourdevicecorrectly", p. 36.●If the weather conditions are bad, the signalstrength may be affected.●Some vehicles have tinted (athermic) windows,which may block the satellite signals.Check satellite signal statusTo check how many satellites your device has found,and whether your device is receiving satellitesignals, press , and select Tools >Connectivity > GPS data > Position >Options > Satellite status. Or, in the Mapsapplication, select Options > Map options >Satellite info.If your device has foundsatellites, a bar for eachsatellite is shown in thesatellite info view. Thelonger the bar, thestronger the satellitesignal. When your devicehas received enough datafrom the satellite signal tocalculate the coordinatesof your location, the barturns black.Initially your device must receive signals from atleast four satellites to be able to calculate thecoordinates of your location. When the initialcalculation has been made, it may be possible tocontinue calculating the coordinates of yourlocation with three satellites. However, theaccuracy is generally better when more satellitesare found.Position requestsYou may receive a request from a network serviceto receive your position information. Serviceproviders may offer information about local topics,such as weather or traffic conditions, based on thelocation of your device.37Positioning (GPS)
When you receive a position request, a message isdisplayed showing the service that is making therequest. Select Accept to allow your positioninformation to be sent or Reject to deny therequest.LandmarksPress , and select Tools > Connectivity >Landmarks.With Landmarks, you can save the positioninformation of specific locations in your device. Youcan sort the saved locations into differentcategories, such as business, and add otherinformation to them, such as addresses. You can useyour saved landmarks in compatible applications,such as GPS data and Maps.GPS coordinates are expressed in degrees anddecimal degrees format using the internationalWGS-84 coordinate system.To create a new landmark, select Options > Newlandmark. To make a positioning request for yourcurrent location, select Current position. To enterthe position information manually, select Entermanually.To edit or add information to a saved landmark (forexample, a street address), scroll to a landmark, andselect Options > Edit. Scroll to the desired field,and enter the information.You can sort your landmarks into preset categories,and create new categories. To edit and create newlandmark categories, scroll right in Landmarks, andselect Options > Edit categories.To add a landmark to a category, scroll to thelandmark in Landmarks, and select Options > Addto category. Scroll to each category to which youwant to add the landmark, and select it.To send one or several landmarks to a compatibledevice, select Options > Send. To use GPS data, the GPS receiver of your devicemust initially receive position information from atleast four satellites to calculate the coordinates ofyour location. When the initial calculation has beenmade, it may be possible to continue calculating thecoordinates of your location with three satellites.However, the accuracy is generally better whenmore satellites are found.Route guidancePress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Navigation.Start the route guidance outdoors. If startedindoors, the GPS receiver may not receive thenecessary information from the satellites.Route guidance uses a rotating compass on thedevice display. A red ball shows the direction to thedestination, and the approximate distance to it isshown inside the compass ring.Route guidance is designed to show the straightestroute and the shortest distance to the destination,measured in a straight line. Any obstacles on theroute, such as buildings and natural obstacles, areignored. Differences in altitude are not taken intoaccount when calculating the distance. Routeguidance is active only when you move.To set your trip destination, select Options > Setdestination and a landmark as the destination, orenter the latitude and longitude coordinates. SelectStop navigation to clear the destination set foryour trip.Retrieve position informationPress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Position.In the position view, you can view the positioninformation of your current location. When you open the Maps application, Maps zoomsin to the location that was saved from your lastsession. If no position was saved from the lastsession, the Maps application zooms in to thecapital city of the country you are in based on theinformation the device receives from the cellularnetwork. At the same time, the map of the locationis downloaded, if it has not been downloadedduring previous sessions.To establish a GPS connection and zoom in to yourcurrent location, select Options > Find place >GPS position [0], or press 0If the power saver turns on while the device isattempting to establish a GPS connection, theattempt is interrupted.A GPS indicator is shown on the display whenyou browse maps. When the device tries toestablish a GPS connection, the circles are yellow.When the device receives enough data from thesatellites to calculate the coordinates of yourcurrent location, the circles turn green.To view information about satellites when you areusing Maps, select Options > Map options >Satellite info.Move on the mapYour current location is indicated on the map with. This option is available only when acompatible memory card is inserted. When thememory is full, the oldest map data is deleted. Music player does notnecessarily support all features of a file format or allthe variations of file formats.You can also use Music player to listen to podcastepisodes. Podcasting is the method for deliveringaudio or video content over the internet usingeither RSS or Atom technologies for playback onmobile devices and PCs.You can transfer music from other compatibledevices to your device. Transfer music from PCYou can use three different methods to transfermusic:●To view your device on a PC as a mass memorydevice where you can transfer any data files,make the connection with a compatible USB datacable or Bluetooth connectivity. If you are usingthe USB cable, select Mass storage as theconnection mode. A compatible memory cardneeds to be inserted in the device.●To synchronise music with Windows MediaPlayer, connect the compatible USB data cableand select Media transfer as the connectionmode. A compatible memory card needs to beinserted in the device.●To use Nokia Music Manager in Nokia Nseries PCSuite, connect the compatible USB data cable andselect PC Suite as the connection mode.Use Mass storage and Media transfer modes totransfer files to a compatible memory card.To change the default USB connection mode, press, and select Tools > Connectivity > USB > USBconnection mode.Both Windows Media Player and Nokia MusicManager in Nokia Nseries PC Suite have beenoptimised to transfer music files. To activate the automatic synchronisationfunction in Windows Media Player, click theSync tab, select Nokia Handset > Set UpSync..., and check the Sync this deviceautomatically check box.2. Select the playlists you want to synchroniseautomatically in the Available playlists pane,and click Add.The selected items are transferred to thePlaylists to sync pane.3. Radio stations supporting RDS maydisplay information, such as the name of thestation. If activated in the settings, RDS alsoattempts to scan for an alternative frequency for thecurrently playing station, if the reception is weak.When you open the radio for the first time, a wizardhelps you to save local radio stations (networkservice).If you cannot access the Visual Radio service, theoperators and radio stations in your area may notsupport Visual Radio.Listen to the radioThe FM radio depends on an antenna other than thewireless device antenna. A compatible headset orenhancement needs to be attached to the device forthe FM radio to function properly.Press , and select Music > Radio > VisualRadio.Note that the quality of the radio broadcastdepends on the coverage of the radio station in thatparticular area.You can make a call or answer an incoming callwhile listening to the radio. CameraAbout the cameraYour Nokia N78 has two cameras. The main, highresolution camera (up to 3.2 megapixels), is on theback of the device. The secondary, lower resolution,camera is on the front. You can use both cameras totake still pictures and record videos.Your device supports an image capture resolutionof 2048x1536 pixels. The image resolution in thisguide may appear different.The images and video clips are automatically savedin the Photos application. See "Photos", p. 70. Thecameras produce .jpeg images. DepthWhen shooting landscapes and sceneries, adddepth to your pictures by placing objects in theforeground. If the foreground object is too close tothe camera, it may be blurred.Lighting conditionsChanging the source, amount, and direction of lightcan change photographs dramatically. Here aresome typical lighting conditions:●Light source behind the subject. Avoid placingyour subject in front of a strong light source. Ifthe light source is behind the subject or visible inthe display, the resulting picture may have weakcontrast, may be too dark, and may containunwanted light effects.●Sidelit subject. Strong side light gives a dramaticeffect but may be too harsh, resulting in toomuch contrast.●Light source in front of the subject. Harshsunlight may cause the subjects to squint theireyes. Crop imageTo crop an image, select Options > Applyeffect > Crop, and a predefined aspect ratio fromthe list. To crop the image size manually, selectManual.If you select Manual, a cross appears in the upperleft corner of the image. Use the scroll key to selectthe area to crop, and select Set. Another crossappears in the lower right corner. Again select thearea to be cropped. To adjust the first selected area,select Back. The selected areas form a rectanglethat forms the cropped image.If you select a predefined aspect ratio, select theupper left corner of the area to be cropped. To resizethe highlighted area, use the scroll key. To freezethe selected area, press the scroll key. To move thearea within the picture, use the scroll key. Digital rights management (DRM) protected contentcomes with an associated activation key thatdefines your rights to use the content.If your device has OMA DRM protected content, toback up both the activation keys and the content,use the backup feature of Nokia Nseries PC Suite.Other transfer methods may not transfer theactivation keys which need to be restored with thecontent for you to be able to continue the use ofOMA DRM-protected content after the devicememory is formatted. You may also need to restorethe activation keys in case the files on your deviceget corrupted.If your device has WMDRM protected content, boththe activation keys and the content will be lost if thedevice memory is formatted. You may also lose theactivation keys and the content in case the files onyour device get corrupted. Losing the activationkeys or the content may limit your ability to use thesame content on your device again.
